DHS New Attraction coming this summer! - The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow

Im really mixed on this. While I'm glad they are doing something with the Narnia building I'm worried it may just be another filler attraction. I mean Narnia was just a "teaser" of an attraction and rather boring. Is there enough room in this building to really make something memorable? At the same time, is Disney cramming too much Pirates down guests throats?

I mean the Pirates ride in MK, plus a Jack Sparrow walking around the parks, now this. I'm just worried they over saturate their big money maker.

If they close PotC for a lengthy rehab it would cause a huge drop in sales of pirate plush and stuff. This attraction will help keep sales going. And it may also allow for beta testing some cool new tech.

That's my theory and I am sticking to it.

The more I read about what this is the more exciting it sounds. It seems it is going to be a walk through of 3 chambers/rooms. Each one will have the projector technology similar to the pre show ride Disaster where Christopher Walken walks around and interacts with the physical stuff on the stage. I'm sure Disney can go great things. It sounds as if Jack will interact with the pirate ship that is set to be part of one of the chambers and i'm sure many other elements Disney will add. I think it will come out great with the special effects, physical elements and seeing what appears to be a real Jack Sparrow moving about and possibly interacting with guests or at least the set. :sohappy:

Is it possible that this could be similar to the King Kong: 360 3-D that is part of the Universal Studios Hollywood studio tour? I know it can't be on the same scale due to size constraints of the room, but is it possible that the room could have video screens as walls that would "immerse" you in the Pirates environment?

I'll quote Martin's earlier post since most people seem to have missed him in this thread-

That does not inspire confidence, especially coming from a guy who would know. I'm expecting the worst here (like someone else), and maybe i won't be disappointed. I don't see any point hyping up something like this.

If this turns out to bring good things to the ride itself, then that's at least a positive. But i'm pretty sure our insiders have already confirmed that any hopes of a major POTC refurb have long since been axed (heard there was originally plans for an outdoors segment and a "going up the waterfall" bit or something that underwent a budget slashing). Lee and others have mentioned mermaids coming to the caves in the beginning of the ride, hardly a major addition (however nice, though i'd prefer to have some more of the skeleton curse scenes from CA's version instead). Ironically, i think the thing the ride needs the most at the moment might be a competent sound person to fix the sound system up (i can barely hear most of the dialog or singing).

Well, that was always the problem with the rehab that was done to add Capt. Jack. While Disneyland got a brand new sound and lighting system with theres. We just got the new scenes but the rest of the ride still sounds like it is in the 1970's. It needs to at least get it up to the same level of sound and lighting that DL has. Anything extra would be great. As much as I would like that I am hoping Peter Pan will finally go down after Mermaid opens up for a massive rehab and upgrade. Because that attraction is by far the biggest black eye MK has right now.

Small attractions are great!

Sadly, they are hardly ever build. They do cost you money, but you can't really market them as a new experience to lure guests back.

Once a park is opened, those A and B tickets just don't seem to get build anymore, they only disappear over the years. When they do get build, it is as part of a larger expasion or as a marketing tool. Which is a shame, because those small attractions add so much to the charm and diversity of the overall experience!

They are great, and important. Often times, the large, expensive attractions get all the attention (understandably so), but the details at WDW and the smaller attractions have always been important. This is especially true for those of us fortunate enough to visit quite often. Every time I go, I notice details I've never noticed before, and I take time to really enjoy the more minor attractions. I almost always find them enjoyable and they serve as a reminder than these smaller attracations can still be rich in detail and creativity.

At Disneyland, the 'Motor Boat Cruise', 'Swiss Family Treehouse' and 'Shooting Galleries' were important to complete the experience 'highlighted' by the 'Matterhorn Bobsleds', 'The Haunted Mansion' and 'Pirates'. Likewise, at WDW, I believe we need attractions such as this new 'Jack Sparrow' attraction, 'The Main Street Vehicles', 'The World Showcase Players', 'The Magic of Disney Animation', 'Flights of Wonder' and the 'Oasis' to complete the experience at each park. Many newbies, and some repeat visitors, never take the time to do these things, but the more we do, the more we feel like we're getting the complete WDW experience.

No.
One show room only.

Not really.
The room is roughly circular, surrounded by a painted cyclorama. There are (I think) three small effects areas around the room, and part of a ship in one corner.
It is not at all like the Kong show at USH.

Thanks for the response. I knew it couldn't be nearly on the same scale as Kong. That's a pretty cool "attraction" out there, but I was curious if some of the same technology could be used on a much smaller scale.

Oh well, I'll just have to wait and see what it becomes and experience it when I get there.

Thanks for your insight!

Here is another quote from the article:

“But we’re always looking at new ways to tell the story that our Guests have never seen before. In this attraction, we’ll let you walk in the footsteps of Jack Sparrow. “It’s not ‘the making of’, not ‘behind the scenes’…it is really a firstperson experience.” Jason wouldn’t divulge any of the state-of-the-art
special effect trickery used in the attraction, but he did assure us that the attraction is certain to elicit a “Wow! How’d they do that?” from our Guests."
I've only ever said that after riding one attractions in my life....The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman at IOA. I hope Jason is right.

Think for yourselfer
Because being negative is more fun for some people!

:hurl:

Am I expecting this to be Toy Story Mania level attraction? of course not.. but it definately sounds like a new fun experience either way..

Small attractions are attracions too...

Negative? All that is being said is it is not a big addition, so don't get your hopes up for something amazing.

It is pretty much going to be Narnia with pirates without the behind the scenes aspect.

I am thinking of this more as a one room version of Poseidon's Fury as far as the spirit of adventure.

DL got a full refurb. What WDW got was possibly a pre-refurb. Or as I have coined it, a "prefurb."

~measure twice, cut once~

By the way, it seems to me the DL version should not try to incorporate the reimagined Pirates story as depicted in the movie franchise. I think it should stay as close to Walt's vision as possible. Except for upgrades to technology the ride theming and story should stay as originally intended.

However, I also feel the WDW version of PotC should be filled to the rim with as much story and imagery from the movie series as possible.

Just my simple opinion.

Based on the plans I have...
The entire building will have three "scenes": The entry vestibule, the main show room, the post-show gallery.
The main room is oddly shaped, with a mock up of part of a ship in one corner. Around the room are a couple more areas for effects to take place.

It is not that large, roughly 40' per side.

From what I have seen/know, it will be a nice little diversion. Certainly better than Narnia. But...it won't be a major attraction. I'm not trying to knock it, because it looks pretty nice. I just don't want people thinking there it's something that it isn't.

I would like to add that the main show room (scene 2) has an occupant load of 136. It also looks like there is a treasure chest by the entrance into scene 3.

Does anyone know how it would fit into the Hollywood Studios theme? It sounds like it would be a perfect addition to Adventureland (everyone wants to meet Jack), but I'm not sure about HS being the right fit.

It seems like they're constantly trying to push their over-exploited properties (Cars, Princesses, Jack) without regard to the theme of the surrounding.

But I'll have to wait and see. I love the environments in POTC and they would make a great theme park experience if done right!

There are some HUGE plans for Adventureland in the works and yes it's Pirates related, but I must admit it looks really cool.

Anything would be better than the previous Narnia attraction it felt dated and out of place. If its basically the same thing but themed to pirates it would still be better.
