Details on Space Mountain Refurb

I'm not that happy that they plan to close off the ride area from the load area. I like the look of the trains shooting round the track as your getting ready to board. Worse still is that they seem to have neglected the view from TTA.

Still, the rest of it sounds great!

The queue will have a themed wall so you will still be able to look up and see stars and stuff.

like i said above, i just want it to be complete by 2012

it has quiet the backside opening :lookaroun

If even HALF of what i've heard gets greenlit...WDW will be a pretty differnet (and better) place in 2012 and that will include a completly refurbished space mountain.

I wonder if they will keep the RCA Explorer Ship on the lift hill, maybe a slight redressing such as they did at disneyland? Would be cool if they could make the Astronauts, actual AA's to look like they are working on the explorer ship.

Nice to hear the windows in the queue should be getting some new effects or improved effects of what is already there.

I agree. The scaffolding can be really visible and gives away the illusion. Beams won't really be that visible.

This is true. As if tomorrowland wasn't degraded enough already. But, why can't they just re-route the TTA so it doesn't go into SM? It can be done! And cheaply too.

I would love it if they rerouted TTA. But since now it appears that they are not going with a single track layout and instead are going to keep the original layout I would be suprised if they removed the TTA from SM. But only Marni knows for sure and he isn't talking unfortunately.

This is another thing I'm worried about. One thing I've never really like at SM's theming is that it never makes it clear whether you're on a space port on earth or on a space station in space. Personally, I'd prefer it to be themed as a space port on earth, as it works alot better with the continuity.

i would like to see a slightly more 21 century version (like DL's version) unless theming requires it to be from a different time in history

this is assuming the lift hill wont be enclosed or other major changes.

You're in Tomorrowland.

In regards to the question of whether or not the TTA will be closed as well for the duration of the refurb -- is there any feasible way to avoid this? Maybe I'm being overly sensitive to it, but it seems to me like the TTA being down in addition to SM for upwards of a year would REALLY put a damper on TL; particularly with the kinetics, look, and sound of the place. Hope that can be avoided if at all possible.

Now you know why Florida's Tomorrowland is overall better than California's. Their empty Peoplemover/Rocket Rods track is still standing.

A few thoughts (with too many different posts to quote to put them all here):

-With adding a roof to the loading area, they could conceivably put the roof *over* where the TTA track is near the load area and incorporate the TTA within the load area design. That way you're "inside" the space station (or whatever the theme is), looking down on the boarding area as you ride through on the TTA (and with people being able to look up from the boarding area and see the TTA going by). Then the TTA trains exit out into the darkness of "space" and you see the glowing trains going by in the darkness as you do now.

-With a redesign of the post-show scenes, I hope they keep the TTA in mind and design them to actually be visually appealing to riders on the TTA. This is how the original RCA post-show "home of the future" scenes were designed. They were something to look at both from the moving walkway and from the TTA above.

-Covering the loading platform will only fix *some* of the light leak into the track area. To really darken the ride they need to re-install the roof over the lift-hills. There's a lot of ambient light from the lifts that bounces off the roof and back down into the ride.

What's the timeline on the redo.....or is that still TBD?
Right now Jan 9th to close, but that`s commemorating a decade of no Horizons so it *could* creep a week or 2 either way (yes, either way) and will probably last the year. They hope to have it open for - or on - the Mountains 35th birthday.

wow, do you really think that they would close it due to horizons anniversary shut down date?

they would be folish not to get it up and running for its own 35th. but we have seen that happen before (SSE)

No :D

Jan the 9th is the date at the mo, but it could move slightly into the end of this year or later into January. Crowd demand would dictate if it begins early, and we all know what the crowds are like at the end of December...

I hope if they do this in January it is more towards the middle to end of the month because I have a trip planned for early January & that will be a real disappointment having SM closed...Especially because I will be bringing some first timers with me & not having SM open will just stink for everyone! :brick:
