I think it would be discriminatory to make those in wheelchairs ride separate buses (even if all things were equal, you still couldn't do it, because, well, separate but equal isn't actually equal).

I also think it's discriminatory (more unfair than discriminatory, I guess, since so many people hold you can't discriminate a majority) that those in wheelchairs or carts don't have to wait in line for the buses in some manner. While I feel for these people, I also get a little perturbed when I wait in line an hour at MGM after Fantasmic to head to MK for EMH, while three individuals, and their entire families, in wheelchairs wait 10-20 minutes, because the line does not apply to them.

You're ideas have merit IMHO. It would be much more efficient for everyone if Disney Transportation had a few specially equipped vans and provided custom service for those who needed it. But the logistics would be a nightmare, and it wouldn't be inclusive.

For all those continually whining about the wheelchair guests in this thread and others....

My father would GLADLY trade in his wheelchair for just a few hours of WALKING around Disney with his grandkids...

Nobody's whining here and this post isn't about that.

Gotta load them first. There's no other way to do it. Imagine trying to load them after the bus is already packed. Unless you think it would be a worthwhile cost to hire a CM to work each bus queue and count off how many people should get on each bus and organize them into groups and put the wheelchair parties at the front of each group just to be fair. :lookaroun

Try again...

The only issue i've had was when I visited Pop Century last year. Me and my friends had been waiting in line for a bus to DAK for 15mins in high temperatures. A bus arrives, they board a disabled passenger, who had just arrived at the stop literally seconds prior. This isnt what annoyed me. It was the fact that the rest of this persons party then took up at least 75% of the bus, meaning only about 10 people in the queue got in.

I think it would be discriminatory to make those in wheelchairs ride separate buses (even if all things were equal, you still couldn't do it, because, well, separate but equal isn't actually equal).

first off, there is a reason wheelchairs are loaded first - it is a safety issue. do you want a person in a scooter trying to maneuver around all the people standing on a bus?

second, you cannot have "separate but equal" because no such thing exists. really people, you have to wait two minutes more for us handicapped people to load.

third - did it ever occur to anyone that we get offloaded last? so we end up waiting even more at the other end. i think it all balances in the end.

fourth - disney is supposed to only allow 5 people to accompany the wheelchair guest on the bus without waiting in line... so very large parties are supposed to split up and not skip the whole line. disney does have a policy on it, but it is up to the individual bus drivers to enforce it.

i am sorry that those of us who are disabled need a little extra time to get on the bus, and that we have to do it first, but that is just the way things are unfortunately. you cannot have a separate "handicapped bus route" because how do you define handicapped? do i count with my crutches? what about when i use my cane? or is it only people in wheelchairs? will they run at the same time? you cannot have separate but equal, it is discrimination...

really people just need to learn patience!

Make the rest of the family wait in line. They can still load the handicapped person first, but the rest of the family only gets on that bus if they would otherwise "merit" it. Presumably, the handicapped person wouldn't want to ride the bus alone, so they would wait to board a bus that the rest of their party would be able to board. I know this requires a little foresight and estimating abilities normally not called upon by guests of Disney, but it is the most equitable way to do things. I know it will never happen because of that foresight (guests could never have such a 'burden' placed upon them), but I still think it's the way to go.

Who needs books like "Joy of Cooking" and "Joy of S ex" when you could always read "Joy of Disability" instead?

ok, that doesnt work a few different ways. first of all, what if the person in a wheelchair is a child? they cant get on alone. and what if the bus makes multiple stops? at CSR it stops at 4 or 5 stops. so the guest is supposed to telepathically determine how many people got on the bus at the first 4 stops? won't work, sorry...

again, only 5 people are supposed to go with the person in the wheelchair, and the rest of the party has to wait...

There are buses available that you can load wheelchairs and stollers on straight from the sidewalk, we have them here in the UK. The bus just pulls up, and if needed the driver can lower the front suspension, the first few rows of seats can be tilted to make space for them. Anybody who sits in these seats knows that they are taking a chance that they may have to move if the space is needed for wheelchair.

Good point with the first line...

If the 5 person policy is true, that would be sufficient, in my opinion, if followed.

i just want a bus that will take me from typhoon lagoon to blizard beach and VISA VERSA!

also - re. letting the person with a disability board then their group board with other guests... well what if they have severe disabilites that stops their ability to be able to be on their own?

my sister for example is severely disabled and has epilepsy - great idea having someone who has an epileptic fit at the drop of a hat in a wheel chair crowded by strangers who will either a) stare/gawp - because they do not understand or they are just being rude OR b) ones that panic - cause the bus to stop and call an ambulance (not needed - all that happens is the need for us to continue our journey or if it is bad, go back to the hotel for her to snooze it off for a few hours.

- both situations are not cool, been there done that. They were as useful as your local crack head...

nice idea that :lookaroun *claps - slowly*
