The significance of the film(s) matter. Black Panther is a very clear and obvious outlier amongst the dozens of other films. Not to mention it’s been nominated for the most Oscars, so far, the only one being nominated for Best Picture. I think it’s the only one that’s been nominated for Best Song, Best Original Score, and maybe some others, but I could be wrong.
It adds to his legend. I agree that this is also a honorary move due to his recent passing. But it also is an acknowledgement of his overall talent.
His performance was so iconic Disney retired the character from its very profitable film series. I'd say that reflects his considerable contribution.

He was the first black main Marvel superhero, for one. That alone is worthy of the award. That led into other films and voiceover. Again, he starred in a Marvel film with the most Oscar noms, including the biggest award. That is significant.

Why do Disney/MCU stans believe time began in 2008? This curiously happened again with Captain Marvel, lauding it as the "first" female superhero film (again, discounting Wonder Woman, Electra, Catwoman, and countless others).
