It's a mixed message. If you Google "still need to wear a mask" you will find articles like this. Those of us who follow this closely understand the messages, but for people who just read headlines it's definitly a mixed message.

Are those articles really saying the vaccine won’t change anything and masks are here forever? I do think it’s necessary to tell people they will still need to wear a mask immediately after getting the vaccine. No point in lying to people when masks are definitely still required. I don’t see that as a failure in messaging. The only places I’ve seen people talking about masks forever is from anti-mask people on social media trying to justify getting rid of them now.

I’m not sure what else can be done. As people start to get vaccinated now it’s an obvious question to ask about when restrictions will be lifted and a pretty consistent answer. Masks were required for almost a year now. Without the vaccine that would have to continue indefinitely until we reach natural herd immunity. I’m not sure how not getting the vaccine gets you to getting rid of masks sooner. Wouldn‘t logic tell you if you are really opposed to masks the best way to get rid of them is to get vaccinated and help get to herd immunity faster?

I don't think the messaging is failing, but it has to walk a fine line between saying it's the way out of the pandemic, but that it will probably take longer then people wish so we need to continue to be careful.

That’s what a lot of the public health officials are saying now. Fauci talks frequently about reaching herd immunity form the vaccine and a potential return to normal by the Fall but always points out that we need to continue with Covid restrictions now and until the vaccine is readily available to everyone. That seems to be a pretty consistent message from the government and parts of the main stream media as well. Even the doom and gloom news networks like CNN have been pretty upbeat about the prospects of the vaccines despite enjoying great ratings from the pandemic.

Just for some quick math. There are roughly 150M Americans in the healthcare, nursing home, 65+ and high risk categories eligible right now. Assuming only 80% want the vaccine that means 120M vaccinations. We are expected to get enough doses from Pfizer and Moderna alone for 110M people by the end of March. If JnJ kicks in another 30 to 40M doses by the end of March that puts us above the amount needed to be through those groups. So if you are in those categories you should have at least 1 shot by end of March. Some states have started vaccinating other groups as well with some other essential workers qualifying but the point is we should be on to people 16 to 65 without high risk health conditions by April 1 or maybe a little sooner. Assuming the same 80% acceptance rate we would need enough doses for about 100M more people. It’s possible by some time in April to have Novavax and/or AstraZeneca approved which would also speed things up further.
Another wrinkle for your timeline is the % of people who will just get 1 of the 2 shots. Essentially leaving doses for others to begin their 2 shot regimen sooner. There was an nbcnews article.

It's not the messaging from the officials, it's the media's tendency to highlight the negative. If you Google" Vaccine end pandemic" you get this:

Dr Scott Gottlieb yesterday on CNBC stated that roughly 30% of the American population has already been infected with COVID. While this isn’t a high enough threshold for herd immunity it will drastically help with the combination of vaccination in getting to herd immunity. A blog I follow stated that at the current pace of vaccination we should see a drastic drop in cases as early as mid-March.
This is obviously an aggressive estimate but it sure beats the doom and gloom that CNN and MSNBC put out every single day.

Yes this was from a month ago
Nationally, cases are already dropping.
I agree, mainstream media is rather useless. I get my facts from @GoofGoof and @MansionButler84 :)

What can anyone do to stop clickbait headlines? If people lack the intelligence to read beyond the headlines there isn’t much anyone can do about that. The statement that started this conversation was that ”we” were doing a poor job with messaging. I don’t know what anyone in a position of power can do to stop media clickbait headlines. The messaging coming from all levels of government and public health officials seems to be pretty consistent and positive towards vaccines. Should we ban anyone from posting negative vaccine comments on social media or stop the media from printing headlines like these?

I would hate to see this whole vaccine plan fail because people saw a few headlines and read some misguided posts on social media and decided not to get vaccinated. I still for the life of me can’t understand how not getting vaccinated puts you in a better position either way. Is it just that people decided to resist out of spite? Is it politically motivated? A desire to see the program fail for political benefit? I‘m at a loss to understand the logic.

Nothing to add to this except the amount of people who actually do only read the headlines is an epidemic in itself! :D

So there might be back to normal sooner than by fall if the vaccine rolls up quicker by summer?
It’s possible. It’s also possible people resist the vaccine in large enough numbers for whatever reason and it takes longer than Fall. The irony is a lot of the vaccine resistance comes from some of the same people who also want restrictions gone immediately. The fastest way to get rid of restrictions and get a return to normal is for everyone to get the vaccine as soon as they are eligible and can find it. I hope people come around on their own, but if that’s not the case maybe a continuation of restrictions through the summer will motivate the resistance to get the shot. I’d certainly prefer everyone get it up front and we have a somewhat normal summer but no guarantee that happens.

I agree. I’m just not sure there is much anyone can do about that. I think it’s important to continue to have celebrities, athletes, politicians and public health officials like Fauci and others to keep presenting the facts and hope it gets through. I am hoping it might be a game changer if we see a place like Israel where they are pretty far ahead of us on vaccinations start to return to normal. The greatest motivation to getting the vaccine is a return to normal and seeing that somewhere else should help alleviate the fear that the vaccine won’t change anything.

There is probably a little of each, but there is also a segment of people who seem to honestly believe the "cure" could be worse then the disease. These people tend to feel the disease isn't as bad as it is, and that the vaccine could be far more dangerous. There was a recent video floating around by Simone Gold and America’s Frontline Doctors, the same group that was claiming over the summer that there was a conspiracy to discredit hydroxychloroquine and that it did work. In this video she encourages people not to be coerced into taking these "experimental biological agents", she won't call it a vaccine. It all ties back into a conspiracy that the drug companies don't want you to know about cheep, effective cures for the virus but instead want to focus on vaccines where they can make more money.

The anti-vax crowd won’t have their mind‘s changed no matter what. We just have to accept that a certain percent of the people will never get the vaccine. We don’t need 100% participation but we probably need 80%+ to ensure herd immunity. Less could get us there eventually too but it will take longer. What worries me is some of the stats from the polls, especially the ones showing a huge political bias. That’s unacceptable. There’s no reason that the vaccine should be a partisan issue. Are people happy living like this? Is it really worth it to prolong the pandemic for political gain? That‘s not conceivable to me but I know others think differently. I’m just struggling with understanding it.

I just wish all of those articles you posted had a more adept headline writer. Like, "Why Masks are Important in the Interim During Initial Vaccine Rollouts," or something. The true message is in the article, but the headlines are clickbait-ish.
