There are 3 drive through testing sites here (NE FL). 2 require a doctor's order. The 3rd is self - regulating. You are only supposed to be tested if you have symptoms or have been exposed, but I'm sure people are being tested because they want to be. The same location is also testing any first responders, healthcare workers, etc regardless of any symptoms or exposure.

So that might result in a lot of negative tests. We also have a large number of patients from a local nursing/assisted/independent living facility, so all residents, everyone on staff, visitors, etc have been tested.

There have been other large scale testing sites in other counties.
We have a drive thru location near my house too. It was initially for first responders and healthcare workers only but now is open to everyone. They still give priority to those groups. They are on the front line and at the most risk being constantly exposed so it makes sense they would get tested more frequently.

Florida is also a state where many elderly and or those with weakened immuned systems are living retired or convienience for their conditions. It does not make the loss of life any less tragic, but all things considered the mortality rate is low with that taken into account and at the moment does not a density spread transmission situation. The average age of Floridians is higher than most states becuase of that.

Makes sense as to why it's so low then. I wonder what the ratio of negatives looks like in a state where you have to beg and plead to be tested.... Can't imagine it would be this high. This is one of the areas where with limited tests out there they need a more standardized way to allocate them. At the very least with a standard method you might get a better idea of which states are really starting to hurt and which ones are artificially low from lack of testing.

But there are still hot spots. It's a large state, so there are some areas which have very few cases. We (JAX) are starting to catch up with the Miami etc area because of the number of cases in one facility. But unfortunately, the virus was brought to the facility by someone who also had free reign to the rest of the county.

It is a situation where the old/less healthy have already been isolated, but others do not respect their vulnerability.

Do they all die of the exact same disease/cause? If all 150,000 died of the same disease there would be efforts made to stop it.
You would think that would be the case, but it wouldn't be. Smoking in New York City kills about 75 people a day every day every year... year after year... In the past 10 days they had less than 200 die from the virus and in those same days 750 deaths from smoking. The reality is this is a new way to die, the media has pushed people to the point of panic and hysteria for reason we can all guess at. But at the end of the day we will all get used to it and move on, even if we never find a cure or vaccine life will eventually go back to normal and people will just live with it they way the do with the deaths from smoking, or alcohol or any other number of things that could be avoided but which we just accept as a part of life.

Smoking isn't a good comparison, though. People die from smoking due to long term damage; it's not like every other person who lights up a cigarette drops dead instantly. If they did, cigarettes certainly wouldn't be legal and there'd be a huge effort to eradicate their existence.

There's also a lot of money in the tobacco industry (although far less lobbying etc. than they had a few decades ago) that works towards keeping politicians away from it.

It is just something worth noting with stastics just become numbers when people keep saying it is as bad as the Jersey and NYC situations. People forget the obvious all the time.

I have discussed ad nauseum on here why examples of smoking, car wrecks, cancer, etc are terrible analogies. They do not increase exponentially. If they were increasing by 20 percent every day, you can bet there would be efforts to stop it. The fact that these deaths are incredibly stable and either increasing or decreasing on a YEARLY basis and not a DAILY basis makes a big difference.

Getting old is a weakened immune system that often comes from smoking and ya know, aging. So I do see it as a fair comparison because of the cross over that is for sure happening. Death is death.
Common misconception on smoking always being long term when there are things like SID, innocent child secondhand smoke situations that cause instant or quick death. Also, drunk driving is a comparison that kills 29 in the united states on average in a 24 hour period which includes any age of any immune system. We take away freedoms of drunk driving after they happen, but we don't stop people from drinking alcohol which even has a surgeon general's warning, but we stop people from traveling wen we have inherent risk of MAYBE getting an illness. Nothing wrong with putting a stop to both, but I would not say that person had a bad comparison.

You’ll be happy to see that in the last 24 hours corona virus has topped the 75 a day rate. Further, 13% of those diagnosed in NY state have been hospitalized.

Maybe we’ll dispense with all the extra safety measures and then you won’t have to worry about this being overblown.

Just because there isn’t a Big-Covid lobby yet doesn’t mean there won’t be.

Soccer season is postponed indefinitely. :(

Cheers to Nike and other companies (Coerver included though not listed in this email) for providing free services to athletes during this time.

Also, cheers to my kid’s soccer coach who has been sending daily training videos, doing the training himself, for the kids to follow along.

I wonder what’s going to happen to all of these kids.. if they’ll still hold tryouts in May, or keep the same teams for the Fall... same with baseball...or any other sport.
What a mess on so many levels. :(
