Just a small update about my father "potentially" being exposed, luckily the doctor looked into and contacted the facility in question and it was clarrified the 14 day lockdown was a precaution to monitor current patients and staff for COVID-19, none have symptoms. He is still scheduled for his lung surgery at this point because it is required. The only thing that may delay or cancel it is hospital ICU and ventilator availability leading up to April 7th because he will require one for up to a week of the procedure. It's scheduled for an Indianapolis area hospital so hopefully they aren't overwhelmed before then.
Definitely nerve wracking knowing the current outbreak is effecting how even needed surgeries are being handled.
So hope everything goes well! 🙂

There is still train and bus service down to Florida from the northeast right? Asking because I’m not sure. If there is are they doing the same thing for them? Quarantine for 14 days?
Last I know, no plans. Amtrak and Greyhound are popular for NYC residents going to FL .

Does Spain pass or fail?

I don’t work in Spain. I work in the United States, where hospitals operate under certain regulations set forth by CMS. Some hospitals here will fail...many will succeed. I get you you want to keep diverting the subject as what I’m saying doesn’t fit into your narrative, but being willing to look at both sides goes a long way. I know some hospitals aren’t up to the task, but I know many are. The original topic was trauma patients and cardiac patients pretty much being pretty much abandoned in the emergency departments. You’ve strayed so far from that at this point.

Patina Group which owns or operates Enzo's Hideaway, Morimoto Asia, Maria and Enzo's, Pizza Ponte, The Edison, Tutto Italia, Via Napoli, and the upcoming Space 220 restaurant has furloughed most employees with the intention to hire them back. They can receive unemployment benefits during the months they are not being paid as they are furloughed, but it is still not ideal https:///2020/03/unpaid-disney-springs-workers-rwb1/.

Landry's Group has furloughed and laid off over 45,000 employees (supposedly temporarily) which owns or operates Yak & Yeti's, the T-Rex Cafe, and the Rainforest Cafe restaurants. Bloomberg.com. Apparently the owner, billionaire Tilman Fertitta, is a pretty scummy guy.

Splitsville and Homecomin' have laid off all employees Mynews13.com.

Cirque Du Soleil is exploring bankruptcy (restructuring) and has laid off thousands. Reuters.com.

Marriott, the owner of the Swan and Dolphin resorts, is furloughing tens of thousands of employees worldwide Usatoday.com

As for the Walt Disney Company itself, Walt Disney World's College Program has been suspended for a few weeks now with attendees still receiving credit albeit without pay for the rest of the term Mynews13.com, but fortunately, full-time and even many part-time employees will be paid at least until April 18th Orlandosentinel.com. Internally, Disney has known that the US theme parks would likely be closed until late May due to COVID-19 since February. Not reopening for the Summer months, or having to close again in the fall would be painful for the company to weather, and tougher choices will have to be made then.

Any new information or updated information will be posted here in a timely manner.
Good info on layoffs and furloughs in and around Walt Disney World and tourism companies.

The latest concern is Mardi Gras participants from LA. This may also apply to other roads (i.e. I-75 and I-95)

If somebody would have told me 3 months ago, that states would be patrolling their borders and keeping people traveling from other states out, I would have thought them crazy. This is nuts.

We are in crazy times. That's for sure. I could mention we never did this with H191 but then I would be verbally assaulted with the death rate of this virus compared to that one. I know.

With this order, the NY/NJ/CT one and the one in RI they are just logging people as they come in and asking them to self quarantine for 14 days. Once people arrive where they are staying they can easily blend in with locals moving about freely. Especially if flying in and renting a car or driving their own vehicle with FL tags. It’s not like they are locking people down somewhere or stopping them from entering the state. It’s a symbolic gesture with no teeth behind it.

If New Yorkers rent cars and drive straight to FL , these cars not necessarily have NY plates.

Then, there is no simple answer, is there? (and there are backroads to gain entry into the state; one does not always need to use I-75, I-10, or I-95).

I sure I'm glad I'm not in a position to have to make those decisions affecting millions of people. None of us are.
I try and see things from multiple angles - and how it will affect multiple persons.

Truly, this is a difficult time and decision-makers will be criticized one way or the other for any decisions they choose to make or choose to not make.

And Rhode Island sending police and national guard to find New Yorkers in their state. Wild times. Are RI residents next going to call 911 to report a New Yorker in their state?

Slight change of topic. Maybe this will help calm things a bit.

I work in a lab with other scientists and we've been talking about this for maybe 10 weeks now. One of the less morose/politically charged topics that we've discussed is long term cultural changes here in the U.S. and worldwide. Before I start, feel free to throw out your own and, of course, discuss the likelihood of any of these that strike your fancy. 1) My boss is a world traveler. He's a geophysicist so some of his traveling takes him to places like Antarctica that are truly irrelevant for this discussion. However, his best friend is Japanese and he loves Japanese culture. He wonders if we will wind up being cleaner like the Japanese. I find this incredibly unlikely as a lifelong slovenly American, but maybe he's right and and I'm wrong. 2) A big lifestyle change in my half century on this planet has been the amount I and my fellow countrymen eat out. It has morphed from a special thing to almost daily in some cases. I conjectured at one lunch that people might cook more. I have bias here too. I like to cook. 3) One person predicted less pleasure travel world wide. I find this unlikely. Of course, it wasn't my idea. I predicted 4) less professional conferences. My field (accelerator mass spectrometry) is an extreme case. So few instruments exist on the planet that we have a meeting every 2-3 years and it rotates amongst the continents. Our next one is in Australia. As I've gotten older, I've really come to question the usefulness of the traditional conference except for a younger person networking. In fact, the most useful work travel I've done in 20 years was visiting a lab in California to learn a new technique before hopping on a plane to continue my travels to Nagoya, Japan and go to a conference. My presentation there went OK with the same people agreeing with me who I knew would agree with me and the same people hassling me who I know would hassle me. 5) Lots of TV folk predicting more working from home and teleworking in general. 6) This is huge for me. I'm a fan of almost every team sport you can think of...except for that handball thing I see in the Olympics. I don't get that one at all. But, I digress. Sports. They are artificial in the biggest sense. We care about people, we've never met before and in Kurt Vonnegut's terminology we're all part of a granfalloon (a group of people who affect a shared identity or purpose, but whose mutual association is meaningless). Will sports getting cancelled hurt long term popularity or will our emotional and intellectual ties to our respective teams and individuals cause them to come roaring back with a popularity heretofore unforeseen and eventually lead to the incredibly bloody post game riots after mere exhibition and preseason games?
I’m thinking now might be a good time to invest in companies that make automatic door openers. Seems like the sort of relatively easy add and retrofit that places can do in the near term to outwardly show they take things seriously. Maybe more places will switch to door less multi person restrooms instead of gimmicks like wrist or foot pulls on the doors.

As someone who attends a lot of webinars, I much prefer conferences and seminars. There is just a different dynamic. The associated socializing provides opportunities for casual conversation that I just don’t think comes up as easily in other means of communication.

I have my doubts about too many actual changes. The concerns about H1N1 caused people to wash their hands more, hand sanitizer to be put out everywhere, and companies and institutions to relax sick policies against the advice of those concerned it would hurt productivity but ended up boosting productivity because people didn’t try to power through and get their coworkers sick. That was all dropped by the next year despite its ease and success.

The one longer term change I could see is how hospitals and other medical facilities are spatially organized. Most facilities comprise of a lot of common spaces, be they public spaces or staff spaces. I could see new facilities maybe being arranged to better isolate sick and well persons and the associated staff.

Same in the women's restroom. 🤢
Back when I cleaned bathrooms, the women’s room was always the worst.
