Things are not looking good on this side of the pond. Cases and deaths are surging upwards with hospitalisations also climbing:

The increase in cases where I live is incredibly concerning:

The news I’m getting from my family in London is really worrying. I was very surprised when my sister told me she got a dirty look for wearing a mask in public. In my corner of the US, masks are still the norm.

Yeah, we recently had a week long break in London and were surprised by how little mask wearing there was compared to my town, although it's definitely dropped off here too. On the Underground where you're still meant to wear them I'd say only about 30-40% of people were.

I ended up with one of these so called 'super-colds' after our trip, but I was very glad it wasn't Covid.

I know people are looking into it, but it is odd how the UK's cases are behaving. It's quite different than the delta variant behavior in Israel, India, the US, or even continental Europe. Initially I read that the drop had possibly stopped due to school resuming and more testing was catching more cases. Btu the assumption behind that was that hospitalizations would not also rise and they have. From what I've also read, differences in mandates/masking/etc. are also not enough to explain the trend.

You know what's funny?
Florida Hospitalization down over 500 since Friday.

As mentioned about Orange County's 14 day rolling positivity is at 4.17%, but today's is 3.4% (still falling). So next week still on track for the 2 weeks of under 5% benchmark the county mayor set for removing the indoor mask recommendation.

I’m very baffled by the whole thing, all the more so because we Brits have a reputation (apparently undeserved) for following the rules. I would have expected near-100% compliance on public transport.

Stay well and safe.

"The Food and Drug Administration Wednesday night authorized booster shots of both Johnson & Johnson and Moderna’s Covid vaccines, another critical step in distributing extra doses to tens of millions of people.

The FDA clearance, which was expected, came after the agency’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee last week unanimously recommended additional shots of both vaccines. The committee recommended Moderna boosters for the elderly and at-risk adults six months after completing their primary series of shots — bringing it in line with Pfizer’s distribution plan — while endorsing J&J boosters for everyone 18 and older who received the initial shot at least two months ago

The ruling will now be handed off to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and its vaccine advisory committee, which has scheduled a meeting Thursday to discuss Moderna and J&J’s booster data. If the committee issues a recommendation, and CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky signs off, additional shots for those vaccines could be distributed immediately to eligible people.

The authorization would open booster doses up to the more than 15 million people who’ve been inoculated with J&J’s shots and the more than 69 million people who have been fully immunized with Moderna’s vaccine."

Here's the release from the FDA, including Mix and Match -

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration took action to expand the use of a booster dose for COVID-19 vaccines in eligible populations. The agency is amending the emergency use authorizations (EUA) for COVID-19 vaccines to allow for the use of a single booster dose as follows:
  • The use of a single booster dose of the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine that may be administered at least 6 months after completion of the primary series to individuals:
    • 65 years of age and older
    • 18 through 64 years of age at high risk of severe COVID-19
    • 18 through 64 years of age with frequent institutional or occupational exposure toSARS-CoV-2
  • The use of a single booster dose of the Janssen (Johnson and Johnson) COVID-19 Vaccine may be administered at least 2 months after completion of the single-dose primary regimen to individuals 18 years of age and older.
  • The use of each of the available COVID-19 vaccines as a heterologous (or “mix and match”) booster dose in eligible individuals following completion of primary vaccination with a different available COVID-19 vaccine.
  • To clarify that a single booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine may be administered at least 6 months after completion of the primary series to individuals 18 through 64 years of age with frequent institutional or occupational exposure to SARS-CoV-2.

Yep, I thought the very same. Not living up to expectations as a nation!

Stay safe over there too! We're booked to fly to the U.S at Christmas to see my wife's family for the first time in two years and we're hoping things don't get so bad that travel is affected, just as it's about to start back up.
