good lord is florida bad right now..... I know we know how florida is when it comes to this stuff, but this is so sad to me. Its at its worst. It is criminal what has been allowed to transpire there.

Some of the public attitude towards Covid including " I don't care attitude " of some are more infectious than Covid itself. The FL locals who had a recent mask burning event need to get their heads examined. Thank you WDW for requiring masking up indoors!

I'm not sure if it's a lack of caring, or such built-up tension right now that society is a balloon about to pop with Covid fatigue. Regardless, it doesn't excuse stupidity.
Sorry to be harsh at this time but it bears repeating that it also comes down to "who" is getting hospitalized and dying. Its not the vaccinated that are getting sick and dying. Thats the stark and uncomfortable truth. Some to go the point to try and lie about it all to say its all a media, big pharma or democrat conspiracy... and many buy into it because its what they want to hear. Nobody wants to see or hear that they were wrong on a big thing like this. But it is what it is.
A significant fear also is that while the vaccinated wont get sick they could still possibly pick up the infection and transmit it to others. Or more properly, that there isnt a total consensus on whether or not that is a real possibility. I see different things. Even though I got my two shots back in April I still have the concern that even though I would be fine on my currently scheduled October trip there, I wouldnt want to come back and risk making others sick. Still more to follow on that one and hopefully more conclusive data on how much of a risk that is.
I also want to see that the state leadership is dealing with the problem, or at least making the effort, which I havent yet. Their fool of a governor is acting like Kevin Bacon in Animal House. "Remain calm! All is well!" Unfortunately he wants to get the Trump block and be elected president. And he will sacrifice the entire state to get it.
The idea of covid fatigue shows that, compared to past generations that had to live through years of wars, or things like major hurrricane disasters that destroy entire states, too many people these days are crybaby.... errr.... "cats". "No more masks! They are infringing on my freedoms!". Pathetic and, I must say, unpatriotic.

That's the real sleeping giant we're trying not to awaken. Some experts hint its eyes are beginning to twitch, but we can stop that real fast if people would get smart and get the shot today. Our biggest threat ahead can be defeated by simply sitting on our duffs, paying literally nothing, and rolling up a shirt sleeve for a few seconds. Not exactly a Herculean task, yet here we are.

Did they drop the option for virtual learning? Our district did so there are more students at school vs enrolled in a school sponsored equivalent of homeschooling.The interesting part is the uptick in students…but “opt out” notes are just foolish.
mom doesn’t know best…she didn’t go to school for it. She may have worked at Rachel’s steakhouse…or worse - blizzard beach

^Some uncomfortable truth in this.
September 11th, 2001 was the first real major tragedy witnessed growing up. Prior to that incident, things were pretty much at peace minus the occasional shocking news story (Oklahoma City bombing, Atlanta Olympics bombing, LA riots). Growing up was a cakewalk *most of the time* compared to what my parents and especially grandparents went through. I'll admit, we had it pretty good, and became a little spoiled as a result.

Herd immunity is not the goal anymore. It's mitigating hospitalizations and death.
A challenging trail to hike at sea level surrounded by snakes and gators is Everglades National Park near Miami.

My family attempted it once, but for some reason, my parents neglected to bring bug spray (odd, because my dad remembered to put the bug net on the grill of the old station wagon). As soon as we went under the tree cover, things got bad very quickly.

Nope, everyone IN school here in FL. Virtual options are no longer an option. Unless, you want to a enroll your child in the state-sponsored “virtual school” which existed prior to Covid and is a mash-up of students all over the state doing all their class work online (via videos they watch, tutorials they read, and web-based work they submit). That type of virtual school does not include any Zoom time.

The signs are already there that Florida is peaking this week in this wave. Next one may be November, so hopefully a lot more folks get vaccinated.

The only way to do a proper shut down at this point and not stop all travel is to require vaccinations and masks as well as immunization buffer for any travelers, with severe penalties including instant jail for any mask trouble makers on flights. Clearly fines are not enough.
If we want to end this, we need to get serious. We have tried just about every nice way.
I am still an advocate of a deadline for vaccination with an immunization buffer and after that, healthcare will still be provided, but at incredible cost to the willfull offender, not covered by insurance, unless for a medical reason ONLY. Religious exemptions are out.

Now, maybe this Delta isn't enough of a motivator, but as we delay (because that is what we are doing) and provide a great environment for it to mutate, we may end up with an Ebola like variant that not only kills more visibly and quickly, but also completely goes past the existing vaccines.
We got relatively lucky with the existing vaccines. It may not happen in such a quick time next time.
Then, perhaps?

Maybe if people stopped and thought about that, it would help a little more. Time for some PSAs to that effect in the media.

If a vaccine resistant ( seriously resistant) strain emerges, WDW closing permanently will be least of our problems.
IMO, there is still time, but not for too much longer.

My 13yo doesn't even want to hear that it will be okay. These kids are learning how little some people really don't care about others.
While I'm slightly saddened we'll start the year with masks in school (knowing the vaccination percentage in my district is super high) I get that the 6th grade kids (11 yos) have no choice. My kid was going to wear a mask anyway indoors and letting it optional outside. That's what our district mandated so it aligned with what we were going to do anyway.
No lockers again this year. No normalcy which kind of stinks. I am hoping that winter with vaccines will change things at our school. I am very sure our 8th grade trip will be off which disappoints me. We'll find a way to make it up. It's disappointing because we didn't have to be this way at this point, but we are.
Last night with the parent at our door showed me how insane people are - and to make this crazy, yes it's public record but they have never ever been to our house before. They didn't even check to make sure they had the right house before confronting us on our property. All because a few other parents with young kids and high-risk family members were getting concerned and innocently the kids asked each other. My kid being one of them since he's friends with kids in the group outside of it and others are not.
This is the insanity we are dealing with.
