To clarify, there are NO pharmacies here in Central FL that are issuing the vaccine, despite all the hoola about Publix being a distributer. It's only hospitals and health depts. And other temp sites. So, no waiting list.

That being said, I would suggest that all of the online appointment systems offer the online waiting list as well, much like Rise of the Resistance. Schedule extra people for the last appt of the day, but don't guarantee it. That way, if there is an abundance of doses that need to be used, they can go to those who have legitimately signed up and are prepared to arrive.
Sounds good to me......can't imagine what would happen at the end of the day, but better than current with respect to doses going to waste.....

Every day, I see my own personal vaccination date being pushed further into the future...due to antics like this:

"State health officials acknowledged that 3,344 doses as of Wednesday were spoiled because of damaged vials or lack of use before the medicine went bad."

There is NO EXCUSE for allowing vaccine doses to expire. None.
THIS. I don't care who is milling around at the end of the day outside the vaccine clinic or whatever. Walk your happy butt outside and ask passers-by if they're interested in getting a shot.

Leftovers at the end of the day is how my husband and I got vaccinated yesterday at a pharmacy: Walked up to the counter and asked if they had any leftover. Y'all, I about cried on the spot. We would have both been months out at the least on our first shot the way things are going in our county. Second shot scheduled in 4 wks and I'm beyond thankful.

Never know if you walk in and ask....

Well done

Can't get people to wear a mask and the proposition is to force them to wear a hideous hat? Yeah, that's gonna work. "I have a medical/moral/other reason that prevents me from wearing a hat. How about tin foil?
Whoosh.

The hat wasn't the point. The part after was. The hat was an imaginary example implementation, specifically to not talk about implementation issues, but what the goal/reasons for any special rights plan would be. Since if the goal is pointless, implementation issues don’t matter.

The “extra” dose that’s no longer extra is like this to me. My wife was telling me that using extra requires specific tools to get it out. Tools not everyone has. So, now someplace that cannot get the extra out has it counted as a delivered dose. Is it 6 instead of 5? Meaning they'll always lose 1/6 of their delivered doses. :(

I live in central Florida and the Publix pharmacy are giving covid shots. A 85 year old full time worker hung out two days(walk-in) last week to get a leftover Moderna vaccine. So it can happen in Central Florida, might depend on specific counties.

A specific part of the new response team/tactic is production of the low draw syringes

Exactly right.. just walk outside and yell you have vaccine shots. Will take you 10 minutes to get the people there for the amount of shots.
Did anyone see the story on the health care workers stuck on the highway? Kudos to them! No shot should ever be wasted.

Orange, Osceola, Polk, Lake, and Seminole are all not currently part of the Publix vaccine effort. And those are pretty much all of the “central” counties in the middle of FL.

What county is your friend in?

This. I know at least 20 people now that have gotten it by getting extra at various sites at the end of the day. I also could find 200 people within 30 mins if they asked me to. No doses should be wasted

Well the one thing the uk has got right has the vaccinations - nearly 600,000 in 24 hours that’s nearly 1% of our population (as n Ireland dont report on a Sunday about vaccs this could be higher) that nearly 9 million done within 2nd shots thankfully starting to be ramped up a little as well. Three members of my family have now got their shot with all adults said to be vaccinated by end of May at current rates

the stuff with the eu has quietened down now so hopefully that will not be an issue. Our problem atm is still with our doom and gloom media and modellers who have said that unless it’s 85% effective stopping transmissions then social distancing will be around indefinitely with no large live events this year - people are feeling despondent! And also may reduce compliance as many are saying why bother!

I got an extra dose and I dont feel one bit guilty. I have followed the rules, I have put my life on hold, I have suffered from income loss, I am one of the millions of Americans who have been deeply impacted by this pandemic. I dont feel bad.

Before I cared about the rules of who gets the vaccine first but its been completely botched and rollout has been slowed because of it. Yes, roll out could have been better, but frankly at this point, IDC who gets the shot as long as its being distributed.

Give those health care workers free passes to DLR! Oh wait, that place hasn't been operating in almost a year....

In a distribution effort this complex some waste is to be expected. That waste accounts for only 0.2% of what Florida has administered and 0.1% of what has been received. I can't find any break down of how the waste happened, but it does include broken vials which is inevitably going to happen. Looking at the Moderna vaccine, once you defrost it you have 12 hours to use it and it cannot be re-frozen. Once you puncture the vile you have only 6 hours to use it. So, unless you have you logistics working perfectly, you are going to end up with wasted doses at the end of the day.

Could have stopped at “I got an extra dose”
