I think one individual we see a lot on TV wishes he had that kind of power, but there are too many that won’t let it happen. Just make sure your vaccine has been given the all-clear by all the major players before you make an appointment for your shot(s) and cancel your bleach order on Amazon. Keep your UV lamp. Winter is coming.
I just love GoT references. Subtle and it works. 👍

Ya know, just from the three leading contenders there are 7 major pharma companies and universities involved. And about two dozen major world governments and governmental agencies looking over their shoulders. Don't know why people are thinking there might be some shenanigans involved.
These companies need to come out with a strong presence and say " We are doing this on OUR time with OUR expertise."

Also... when an article says they are reporting what another article says, then go to that article as the source and not a retelling of it (one done badly). The article you posted has a link to the Daily Beast's article for Pete's sake!

Anyhoo.... dedicated discussion of that article has its own thread...

I would be sad if it was available tomorrow.

Because, I want proper FDA approval.

There's no way to have a proper FDA approval for a vaccine tomorrow. The steps we can skip or accelerate don't get a fully evaluated vaccine tomorrow. We would have to skip safety and efficacy steps to have it that fast.

That's the worst part. We don't need a vaccine to get back to normal. It could be done through fast testing, targeted isolation, trace. We're getting better at fast, but not great. We still have people actively not helping tracing. We're still far away from enough testing. I'll be happy when the daily positivity is below 1.0 or below 0.5 for a trend. Then we will be identifying enough community spread to allow the targeted isolating and tracing to work. Assuming people don't continue to fight against it. Until then, we're still flying blind. Not as blind as we were at 10%, but still no control over community spread. :(

People in general will not get back to prior levels of activity until community spread is under control.

When I say I I would be happy if it was available tomorrow I mean sure I wish we were that far along ALL that I care about is that it is tested, not rushed, and safe. As long as that is done we can open up and put this pandemic behind us. I sure as hell hope who ever is leading our country takes this seriously as this is not the last time we will experience this and prepare for future pandemics so we are not in this same situation. It will come down to leadership and hopefully take these things seriously.

About that transverse myelitis case. If true, that's really bad news for the Astra-Zeneca vaccine. Transverse myelitis is pretty rare, with an incidence of less than 5 cases per million people. The trial has nowhere near that number of people enrolled, so unless they can clearly tie this case to the after-effects of an infection, it will be impossible to adequately refute a connection to the vaccine.

Given that transverse myelitis can cause permanent neurologic damage, if there's any association with the vaccine at a significantly higher rate than the natural occurrence, the vaccine is toast.

Delaware is going to hate us forever.

If we did it by county, Orange County, FL would qualify for being off the travel ban. Less than 10% positivity. Less than 10/100,000 new cases.

I didn't want to "like" this post for fear that people would think I am cheering a possible failure. But, I think you very eloquently put into words exactly how difficult this whole process is. I think many armchair vaccine experts think that the vaccine is so easy to produce, and will certainly be here very, very soon. Easy peasy! In reality, there are so many risks.

Thank you for being a clear voice of reason.

The exact same thing happened earlier in the trial with someone developing transverse myelitis but was found to be unrelated it’s only gaining so much news now as we are so close! AstraZeneca are planning on resuming the trial later this week or early next week so I think they are pretty confident it’s not due to the vaccine.

And to be perfectly clear, this is only potentially bad news for one specific vaccine project. But it illustrates the importance of getting this process done correctly, not according to a politician's desired time-line.

You know what's funny?

Yeah. Pauses are a pretty normal part of the process.

It changes by the week. Anyone who’s been holding off on their visit to St. Thomas better leave today. Could be back on the list next Tuesday...

Makes it impossible to plan anything. It would be less deceptive to just say, “quarantine if you go outside of CT, NY, and NJ.”

Yep, just had a conversation last night with 2 guys that work at different pharma companies about that. One works in supply chain and the other a scientist who works on actual vaccine development. The takeaway was that it’s not surprising and that’s why it usually takes years to come up with a viable vaccine that gets approval. These types of things are fairly common. Not necessarily this particular adverse reaction but just general speed bumps. In a lot of cases it is proven out that the reaction was unrelated. The general public doesn’t typically follow vaccine trials so this seems like a big deal, which it could be if proven to be related to the vaccine but could also be nothing.
