"Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said Wednesday that the state is facing a “massive outbreak” in the coronavirus pandemic and that some new local restrictions may be needed to protect hospital space for new patients.

In a series of midday interviews with television stations, Abbott said Texas would again pass 5,000 new coronavirus cases and more than 4,000 hospital patients with COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus. Texas passed both thresholds for the first time Tuesday.

“There is a massive outbreak of COVID-19 across the state of Texas," Abbott said in an interview with KFDA-TV in Amarillo."

"There are some regions in the state of Texas that are running tight on hospital capacity that may necessitate a localized strategy to make sure that hospital beds will be available," he said.

Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, the largest pediatric hospital in the U.S. said Tuesday that it was admitting adult patients across its campuses to free up more hospital bed space in the Houston area. The number of COVID-19-positive hospital patients in Harris County, which encompasses Houston, has nearly tripled since May 31.

Even with the hint of new restrictions to protect hospital space, Abbott said in a separate interview with KDFM-TV in Beaumont that hospital executives have assured him that they will be able to handle the rising numbers of patients.

“If there are more people coming in with COVID-19, they will ensure that beds are available,” Abbott said."

The Texas Medical Center - the largest medical complex in the world - is reporting that 97% of their ICU beds are occupied. They are typically between 70-80% occupied.

It's a certainty that there are people who are covid-positive walking around Universal every day. That's something to give everyone pause, even if it doesn't mean shutting down.

I'm not saying this to be snarky. How do you know it's a certainty? Florida has a huge population. One of the largest. Nobody wants to see numbers go up like this but nothing is absolute. That's about all there is to be sure of with this virus. Nothing 😂😭 I expected to know people who tested positive by now especially with a husband who works at two different hospitals. People are getting it but the consensus has still been that most people are not.

The junior olympics was a "major announcement" also. I'm sure he'll talk about COVID but I just don't predict the "major announcement" to have anything to do with it.
Well, you were correct. Good to see the teachers do well but nothing else. Increased testing.. elective surgeries .. same stuff.
I just wonder where he finds that big sheet to cover the elephant in the corner of the room. Hope things work out for the best down there.

The large majority are non covid and still below normal but will most likely more into surge tomorrow.

All the days news is not bad, I have no agenda, no matter how many posters here constantly try to erroneously put some kind of agenda on me. Not downplaying just sharing the facts, some don't like that for many reasons, but facts are facts. I also share my opinion and anyone can agree or disagree, no worries.
Consistency in defiance is an agenda of its own.

Of course the majority are non-covid. That's not really the issue...the issue is what COVID is taking is pushing hard at very thin margins. We don't have a lot of excess capacity built into the system, because that's not profitable. So whether you have COVID or not, if you need an ICU bed, you need COVID numbers to retreat quickly...they're quickly moving in the other direction however.

Hate to break it to you hospitals do have excessive capacity built in to the system. That one system has almost but not quite double the capacity for surges. Now if hospitalization keep growing at an exponential rate into mid july of course that isn't sustainable but we aren't there yet. plan for it yes.

Please re-read my post. I didn't say they have 0 excess capacity...I said we don't have a lot. And when your ICU beds are at 97% full, there's not much more to go.

Yes then the go into surge/overflow, even in the TMC system 97% is currently a yellow threshold metric, others metrics are red and they are watching closely

I get the sense that a lot of people (not necessarily anyone on this board) want to see bodies flooding the hallways before admitting there's a big problem, much like we saw in china, Spain, and Italy. This is some thing we DONT want to happen in our country, and some countries warned us on how to prevent it from happening, we have yet to heed the advice. This is the problem with ICUs being nearly full.
