Confessions of a Disney Jack Sparrow...

On another note though, it seems from the article, and other things I've read, that there's alot of "snitches" at disney. Informers. Huggy Bears. Or did I just read it wrong? Is everybody turning in everybody else?

Yup, thats how I read it too.

I can't believe you are all missing the most important point in this story. We've found a male entertainment cast member who is straight. Kidding, there are a FEW. And I've seen Prince Charming kiss Mary Poppins, and I've seen Ariel kiss Eric.

There are Disney rules. Disney expects you to follow them and for the most part, they are not hard. However, I heard someone mention the other day that it is odd that Disney expects you to over look or be understanding about the fact that your break came after 5 hours (4 is the limit) or, though you were due to clock out at 10 pm, they couldn't send someone to relieve you till 10:30 pm. However, if you clock in 2 minutes late, you get half a point. Yes, late is late. And late for a break or late for a clock out is late as well, but there is no compensation for that unless they completely forget your break...happens...and they will pay you for an untaken break.

Back to this guy...love the Ariel Jack photo.

As for what the characters have to endure...
==people will 'feel up' the fur characters to see if it is a girl or a boy.
==men have gotten so excited standing next to a princess that they have wiggled around till they 'finished' being excited.
==Ariel and Jasmine require the most supervision because they are the most popular with dads.
==Ariel is often groped by adult males...'are those real?'
==people constantly ask if is is a man or woman 'in there'

The other day at Epcot we had to send a warning out about two seperate things. 1. a group of gentlemen had consumed way too much alcohol and were harrassing princesses. 2. a family was bringing a child around to visit the characters with ring worm. However, the same thing happens with lice and pink eye as well. The oddest stuff happens at the MK when someone comes to visit a character and they say the person was really drunk. How did they get drunk at MK? In other words, how did they sneak it in.

My best friend is a Cast Member in entertainment and i've heard all sorts of rules she has to follow while in costume. And the point system, it just seems like a pain in the rear.:brick:

I met this guy at the Pirates Premier last May!! I've actually got a photo of my wife with him from that night on my PC here, but don't know how to post pics. Tried a couple times and it didn't work. Anyway... We thought it was weird that he was there, walking the red carpet right behind us, and yet when he was interviewed right behind us, he gave a real name. Or at least something other than "Jack Sparrow".

At first we thought he was a Disney employee there, hired to be Jack. But then as the night went on, and he was actually INSIDE the premier after the red carpet, and even watching the movie a couple sections over from us, it was obvious he wasn't.

And for anyone that wonders how I would know it was THIS guy... Trust me. There were only a handful of people dressed "to the nines" like Jack, and only one that had his mannerisms and look completely dead-on.

Funny to find out afterward about the weird tie-in he actually DID have with Disney... Just not the night of the premier.

So if I can figure out how to post a picture, I will.

EDIT: Here's a link to the pic...

http://photoalbums.wdwmagic.com/showphoto.php?photo=35142&size=big&cat=

If someone can take that pic and post it on the thread, that'd be fine... Don't know why, but I can't figure it out.

Well I don't think the writer of the article was trying to elicite sympathy or badmouth Disney. He was just telling his own story in his own way. Of course there is a whole lot of the story that we are not hearing. I work in the same office as my DW and we are able not to have PDAs in the building.

I am happy that the OP posted the article, it was very interesting to read. Thank you to other CMs that have posted a little info here on their own experiences. I think it is fun to know a little about how things work behind the scenes. I am also amazed that so many adults are inappropriate with the characters. It's a little amusing but really more scary and sad.

Why do the characters have ring worm...?

For any CM's or friends of characters out there. Is it difficult to get into workmode at Disney? I imagine that it's quite a shock to go from being able to wonder around the happiest place on earth doing what you want to having to follow very strict rules.

Perhaps this is why characters are seen together backstage. Common sense says you shouldn't but add a bit of romance to a place you feel comfortable and I can imagine that it's hard to stick to all of those rules.

Gosh that's strict! I hope they let you have cell phones.

I wouldn't last very long at this company. Many of the employees remind me of elementary school goody-goodies. Even on this forum we've seen people fall over themselves in such a rush to report something another employee did.

To those wondering what they make being Jack Sparrow, they are contracted under Actor's Equity Union and are generally paid union scale. If I remember correctly, it's $20-ish an hour.

haha, i read this article and was more amazed about the park guests then anything "Jack" had to say. Do people really act like that? offering the guy certain "services"? does that happen to other face characters?

sure does

they're really not that strict- I promise. Only those who have had issues with the system will complain about it's flawed- it's really not that bad. It's not at all hard to get into workmode. When I'm at the parks as a guest, I'm playing. When I'm working, I'm playing. It's quite easy really!

And there's really no rule that says characters can't date. Is it smart? No, but I learned that one a little too late. It's for the same reason that it's not usually smart to date anyone that you work with, no matter where you work. Posting that picture though? That was just plain stupid- that in and of itself could have been grounds for termination.

Are all the Jack's at Disney Land equity? I know most at DW are because they do the show but the ones that work meet and greets at the P&P are not because they don't do actual acting so I'm not sure if meet and greet Jack's at DL are considered equity or just regular CM's.

These were taken at the Pirates 3 premiere. Sorry about the quality...it's hard trying to take a picture while trying to fight off thousands of other girls.

He was a great Jack.

Also, there was a real Disneyland Jack Sparrow on the red carpet as well...it was confusing seeing both of them.
