YEP finally made it to the comics store. We were running late for the 2:35 showing of Hellboy so we went to the bookstore first and then made the 3:30 movie.
There is an overwhelming number of series out there. It's hard to find #1 of anything and I wasn't sure if I should just buy whatever is out there - do you have to read them in order?
I did manage to get the first Indiana Jones issue - which looks entertaining. I've always enjoyed Indy....I bought the Atari game when it came out so I guess buying the comic was fate.
I also bought 2 trades: The Complete Jon Sable, Freelance Vol 1 and 2. I really like Mike Grell so I had to get them, especially since they were 50% off. My husband seemed interested in reading them, so that's helpful.
My question - Does a new comic in every series come out each week? Is there a schedule or what? I don't want to get Indy #1 and then not be able to find the next one.
And is it bad to just jump in the middle of a numbered series? Or do I need to look on the internet to buy issues to catch myself up?
Excellent questions, not let's get to some answers, shall we?
First off, the new Indy comic, was it Temple of the Gods? I really liked that book, felt like a good Indy film, only illustrated.
Comic books come out every week. Now, in each week different comics come out. The new Indy comic came out this week, so issue number two won't be for another month. Most comics come out monthly, some even bi-monthly. Of course, books like Amazing Spider-man are 3 issues a month, but that is a rare exception. Comics don't normally come out weekly due to the amount of planning needed to do before hand, the comic 52 for example, while a new issue came out each week, took over a year to coornidate. It can be weekly, but they usually stick to monthly.
As far as jumping into a book in the midst of a series, it's how most people do. If you were to start reading the new Thor book tomorrow, and liked it, I would say go ahead and track down the old issues. Most books, Marvel ones especially, give you a recap with each issue to fill you in on the past few issues. So, with the recap you can follow the book, and if you like it, you can get past issues. The bst way to learn if you like a book or not is to just jump in head first to a new book and give it a shot.
Some books though, like Fables, Sandman or even Y: The Last Man, I would totally recommend getting as trades first. Fables for instance, so much goes on with that book it reads best from issue one. Same with Y the Last Man.
I hope some of this helps. If I didn't expain it clearly enough, please let me know and I will try again. Also, if there is a book you think you want to read but not sure about, ask me and I will tell you a bit about it if I have read it. Also, I listed a bunch of books for recommendations a few posts ago (that realllllly long post of mine) I recommend giving any of those books a shot.
