Did you go to the comic shop this weekend? If so, what did you think? Did you get any comics?

NOPE! This is where I meant to go http://cosmosofcomics.com/index.html and they closed earlier than I thought they would. Guess I have to wait until Wednesday unless the Florida Bookstore is open tomorrow! They're close to the theatre that we're going to (Hellboy) so I think if they're open I can slip in there.

I should have gone there today but it was so rainy here that I didn't want to go acoss town.

This thread has encouraged me to start looking at the TPB sections in bookstores lately (an old interest I kinda forgot about in recent years).

I bought BATMAN: DARK VICTORY tonight. I bought Long Halloween a long time ago and never looked at the follow-up story. :D

Batman Long Halloween and Dark Victory are awesome by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. They have a book of Batman Halloween stories that are good too. They also did SUperman For All Seasons, excellent, and a bunch of Marvel ones as well.

Batman Hush by Jeph Loeb is also another great Batman book. Different artist, but the story is just amazing, and the art work, Jim Lee I believe, oh man, so beautiful!

Cool store, I hope you get there soon.

Seeing a comic movie and then hunting for comic books after sounds like a nice way to spend a Sunday!

I know of a great comic shop in Fl, Colesium of Comics. I believe they have several locations. My friend who lives down in FL (a cast member) took me to them, excellent stores, well worth tracking down to visit.

Keep me posted if you wind up buying any books.

YEP finally made it to the comics store. We were running late for the 2:35 showing of Hellboy so we went to the bookstore first and then made the 3:30 movie.

There is an overwhelming number of series out there. It's hard to find #1 of anything and I wasn't sure if I should just buy whatever is out there - do you have to read them in order?

I did manage to get the first Indiana Jones issue - which looks entertaining. I've always enjoyed Indy....I bought the Atari game when it came out so I guess buying the comic was fate.

I also bought 2 trades: The Complete Jon Sable, Freelance Vol 1 and 2. I really like Mike Grell so I had to get them, especially since they were 50% off. My husband seemed interested in reading them, so that's helpful.

My question - Does a new comic in every series come out each week? Is there a schedule or what? I don't want to get Indy #1 and then not be able to find the next one.

And is it bad to just jump in the middle of a numbered series? Or do I need to look on the internet to buy issues to catch myself up?

Excellent questions, not let's get to some answers, shall we?

First off, the new Indy comic, was it Temple of the Gods? I really liked that book, felt like a good Indy film, only illustrated.

Comic books come out every week. Now, in each week different comics come out. The new Indy comic came out this week, so issue number two won't be for another month. Most comics come out monthly, some even bi-monthly. Of course, books like Amazing Spider-man are 3 issues a month, but that is a rare exception. Comics don't normally come out weekly due to the amount of planning needed to do before hand, the comic 52 for example, while a new issue came out each week, took over a year to coornidate. It can be weekly, but they usually stick to monthly.

As far as jumping into a book in the midst of a series, it's how most people do. If you were to start reading the new Thor book tomorrow, and liked it, I would say go ahead and track down the old issues. Most books, Marvel ones especially, give you a recap with each issue to fill you in on the past few issues. So, with the recap you can follow the book, and if you like it, you can get past issues. The bst way to learn if you like a book or not is to just jump in head first to a new book and give it a shot.

Some books though, like Fables, Sandman or even Y: The Last Man, I would totally recommend getting as trades first. Fables for instance, so much goes on with that book it reads best from issue one. Same with Y the Last Man.

I hope some of this helps. If I didn't expain it clearly enough, please let me know and I will try again. Also, if there is a book you think you want to read but not sure about, ask me and I will tell you a bit about it if I have read it. Also, I listed a bunch of books for recommendations a few posts ago (that realllllly long post of mine) I recommend giving any of those books a shot.

Yep it was the Temple of the Gods. I skimmed the first few pages and knew I would like it. My husband seemed amused but I know he'll read it, too.

So I guess I need to go back every few weeks and see if a new one in the series I am reading came out. I wanted to ask the guy working there today but the place had a weird feel. There were all these kids playing some kind of a group game together all up in the comics area.

I saw there were titles that were #17, etc in a series and it's a lot easier to think I could just jump in there rather than track down the older ones. I did see a lot in the trades that I could read for sure, and they are all in there in order, which is nice.

I did skim that "reallllly long post" but once I got to the store all the names hit me at once. Pretty overwhelming. I was going to make a list but I didn't want to look like a geek....after seeing the game-players there I don't think it is even possible to look any geekier than they did.

:ROFLOL:

Thanks for the help! I'll start the Indy book tonight since I am done with my latest murder mystery - good timing to start something new!

OH and I saw Pain Killer Jane, among others, there - surprising what all has been on TV and is in graphic form.

I really liked Temple of the Gods for an Indy comic. They also have the digest size, family friendly Indiana Jones Adventures. The art style is like the old Batman Animated show from the 90's. A great book art and writing wise.

Yeah, comic shops can be home to some weird folks. My advice is try a few shops, find one you get a good vibe from, and frequent that. You can make a "Pull List" which is a list where they will pull aside the books you want every week, or just show up on your own. I really recommend Colesium of Comics. I'm not sure of where you are in FL, but I recommend it, it's a top notch store. If I lived in FL I would shop there.

Trades are great, I love them. If you leap into a book and enjoy it, trades are the best way to go about getting the back story. Some series that are great but have ended, such as Sandman or Y: The Last Man, are out as trades and read best that way.

Remember this, a girl in a comic shop is never a geek. Don't worry though about looking like a geek, so long as you enjoy the book that is all that matters. Plus, you can always go to Barnes and Nobles to get trades these days, or order online from them.

You'd be amazed of the movies that were once comics originally. No just super hero stuff, but films like Road to Perdition or History of Violence.

I hope you enjoy the Indy book and check out more comics. It's a great medium and there are some truly wonderful books out there. Feel free to ask questions any time.

I checked out their website and wow - sounds like a really nice place. It's several hours away from me but there is one near WDW - in Kissimmee. They even have directions from WDW on their site - I'll be there the Sunday 8/31 after our WDW Magic friends meet - so I will stop by and see what they have.

I do need to check around my town and see if there is anything else. Also the subscription service idea is a really great way to get what I want without missing out.

Thanks! Your thread has been a neat diversion - I am kind of murder-mystery-burned-out lately. :lookaroun Also I need to see about filling in the blanks in my Green Arrow comics - I did see some new Green Arrow comics, too!

I'm glad you're checking out Coliseum of Comics. I really wish they had a store by me, it's that good of a place.

Subscription services work great for comic shops. It will help you not miss an issue, but also, if you can't make it one week, it's nice to know your books are waiting for you there .

Glad the thread helps. You know, if you like murder-mystery comics, let me recommend this book. It's called Torso by Brian Michael Bendis and is based off a true story. After Elliot Ness brought Al Capone to justice, he was sent to Ohio I believe, to try and stop a serial killer. Only, the killer never got caught. It's an interesting story told in a comic medium. If you do read it and like it, I would also recommend by Bendis Goldfish and Jinx.

Also by Bendis, Powers, which is a comic about cops who investigate super hero deaths. The first few trades are just amazing, especially the first one.

As for Green Arrow, years back Kevin Smith wrote for it for a while. I think his story line was called Quiver, it's collected as a trade.

I'm out of it for a little while and the thread gets away from me. I'm glad to see so many new faces in here, though.

Ironman is amazing. I would go so far as to say it's the best Marvel movie to date.

#2 in my movies of the year list...right behind WALL*E (Ironman is #1 as far as rewatchability goes though).

You read my mind, sir. Those are my exact top two. Though I'd add that not only is Iron Man the best Marvel movie to date, it's probably right there with Batman Begins as the best superhero movie to date, as well. They're neck-and-neck in my view.

Speaking of Bendis, he wrote a great little ashcan story called "Fortune and Glory" about his misadventures with Hollywood trying to sell Torso as a film script. It's quite fun and sweet, and allegedly all true. If you can find it I highly recommend it. His wife is particularly well-written. I'd forgotten about it until you mentioned the actual Torso trade.

Speaking of trades... (this is my "speaking of" post, apparently) If you're trying to grab some on the cheap I've had a lot of luck with Amazon. Admittedly it's preferable to support your local small-business comic shop, but Amazon usually has some nice deals. Most trades I buy are $5-10 off cover price, and if you order a couple at once you'll have free shipping. Just something to consider.

I remember getting Smith's Quiver series when it originally came out while I was in college. Those are the only GA books I think I've bought, but I remember really liking them a lot. It was a great jumping-on point for understanding Oliver Queen, and there were appearances by other characters like Batman and Etrigan the Demon. If you're into GA at all (Shannon) I'd definitely recommend picking that up as a trade.

I really enjoyed Kevin Smith's Daredevil run Guardian Devil. His run on on the Black Cat/Spider-man comic though I wasn't crazy over.

Fortune and Glory is a great book. He also did another one called Sell Out which is just as good. I really liked his art work in these books and his writing of dialogue is always good.

Has anyone ever read the Disney Haunted Mansion comic books Slave Labor Graphics put out? (I might have already asked this, forgive me if I did, but it is a great comic).

New comics come out tomorrow!

Totally have all of those! I really liked them. Speaking of Slave Labor... one comic I laughed so hard at was I Feel Sick. I guess being a woman I couldn't help it. :D I could have sworn there was something else by Roman Dirge that I read but I can't remember it now...

The other Roman Dirge comic, was it Lenore?

I love the Haunted Mansion comic. I got all the issues as well as the trade, but the trade doesn't collect all the issues for some reason, just select stories. Great comic though, love the different stories, the art work, the characters they chose to tell stories about, and even the covers are nice!

Today is new comic day. I'll swing by on my way home from work and see what they got, hopefully there'll be some good stuff.

*anxiously awaits news of new comic day so he can live vicariously through GL*

*also apparently has nothing constructive to say*

LOL

I had a light comic day today, just one book! Well, not really, I could just buy them all, which is what I want to do, but can't afford that.

I bought an issue called The Helm. It's the first issue about a guy who find a helmet that gives him powers, but it kind of hates him. I'm going to read it in a bit and then let you know later on how it is.

I am also trades into the series Y The Last Man. The series ended this year and there are 10 trades out. Much like the title says, it's about Yorick, the last man on Earth, him and his monkey. It's an extremely great book, very well written, great art, and an excellent story line. I don't even want to try and explain too much cause I fear I won't do it justice. If anyone is ever in a book store, check out the graphic novel section. If they have this check it out, trade 1, and I bet by the time you finish the first issue in that trade you will be hooked!

Saving the thread here.

I'm really hoping the success of The Dark Knight this weekend will make more kids, and adults, seek out comic stores to start reading comic books.

Bet I'd like the murder mystery stuff - I really had no idea they made those kind of comics - I was thinking it was all super-hero stuff....I really do need to go elsewhere to see a bigger selection!

Neato about the different Green Arrow stuff. I'd like that.

Several of my friends have seen it and were blown away at how great it is. I was thinking of waiting and seeing it at home and not in the theatre. Wonder if that's something I'll regret....
