I love new comic day! It helps break up the work week.

Did you read Civil War as a trade? I think that book read great that way.

I don't know of any new stuff happening with Iron man or Hulk, other than what is out now. I think they are doing a book about Hulk's son who was born during the story line when Hulk was sent off planet by the Illumanati.

Secret Invasion should still be new enough to jump in and read. I would also recommend reading the trades of Y The Last Man if you haven't yet, there are 10 out now, and of course Fables is my one comic I tell everyone about, such a great book.

I feel like I should know what you mean...but what do you mean by the term "trade?"

Trade is a trade paperback or graphic novel. It's when they take a mini-series like Civil War, or say a story line from an ongoing series, like 5 or 10 issues, and put them all in one book.

They are a great way to read a completed series (Y the Last Man or Sandman as an example) or for a series that's been around for a while a great way to jump in (like Fables. You could read the first so many trades and then pick up the single issues from where the last one left off or just do trades when they come out).

More and more now comic companies release story arcs as trades.

They also look great on a bookshelf.

OHH!!! That's EXACTLY what I've been looking for!

They have it for Civil War and World War Hulk???

Civil War is definitely out as a trade. World War Hulk is out I am sure, but since it was a long story line, it might be out in a few trades telling the whole story.

Any local comic shop will have them, as will Borders Books or Barnes and Noble.

Pretty light week for me comic wise. Got issue one of Urban Myths, which is a really cool book. Imagine Same Spade from the Maltese Falcon who lives in a world where Greek Myths are everywhere, yet it is modern day. Good read, good art, I was happy.

Issue one of the new Indiana Jones mini-series Tomb of the Gods came out. An excellent read, Indy comics, much like Star Wars ones, can be hit or miss, but this was a hit. It felt like an Indy movie, which was nice.

Been a while since I hopped into this thread...:D

I only finished the first books of Y:The Last Man as well as Fables. Both of them I really enjoyed! I look forward to reading the rest of the series. I still have a bunch of books to start into...like Sandman, not to mention plugging my way through the Essential X-Men.

I did come across an old Wizard magazine featuring Alex Ross and I'm interested in Kingdom Come. I've heard good things...can't remember if my husband owns that one or not...

Elfquest? Are they doing it live-action or animated?

I got a few Elfquest trades.

:lol: I used to read Elfquest in the early-mid 80's. I totally forgot about them! I remember, growing up as a country-girl, reading Elfquest with my friend and going out in the woods with machetes and playing "Elfquest" together. I was probably 10-12 years old.....they were so well-illustrated and captured my imagination.

I need to look these up again sometime. I haven't actually purchased a comic in years! :lookaroun

If you liked the first trade of Fables just wait until you read the rest! You have some great stuff ahead of you!

I love Y The Last Man. I'm about to read all 10 trades again soon.

Kingdom Come is amazing. Not only is Alex Ross' art beautiful, but the story is excellent as well. If you enjoy it I recommend then Marvels, which is a book Ross painted and was written by Kurt Busiek I believe.

I'm reading Sandman on my lunch break at work, nice way to spend an hour.:D

They just started re-releasing them in trades. I got the first two I still need to read. I really like Wendy Pini's art (think I misspelled her last name).

Wow - I should look for them. I remember them as large-sized graphic books - not like little comic books. We do have a shop that sells a lot of comics here - it's just on the other side of the big city from me and I don't think about going that way.

PS We're watching Hell Boy now in FX in prep for the new movie. I still haven't seen Iron Man but I want to. I heard it was good.

Oh man, thank you so much for the heads up that Hellboy is on FX. I just put it on. I just watched it two days ago on DVD, but if it's on TV I have to watch it.

Such a great movie. How are you liking it?

The Elf Quest books out now are digest size. So, smaller than a comic, like Reader's Digest size. I do remember the larger ones you mentioned though. I would think Barnes and Noble would have these, if not them a comic shop in your area could order them for you.

As a kiddo I had a few random comics. A few Spidy. Loved JJJ, and feared Goblins. Had Flash Gordon. Scared stiff by the Vamperlike baddie. Got a starter set of Superman, Batman, WW and JLA. Loved the origin stories. Then, didn't get another comic til high school. Got into the Old Republic SW comics HUGE. Never hit a DC or Marvel comic though. They just seemed WAY to far beyond me when I flipped through a friends. Never thought I'd catch up.

Then JL/JLU happened on cartoon network. Tried to catch a few in the first season, but it was still way over my head. What the heck were the little blue Lanter guys. All I knew was that GL got almost endless powers from his ring. Then the JSA episode came along. THAT WAS AWESOME. I then made weekly stops by the local library. TPBs RULE!!! I started reading through JLA. Then -- I picked up Dark Knight Returns and Dark Knight Strikes Back (I still liked Strikes Back better -- but don't tell anybody). I was HOOKED!!!

Season Pass for STAS, Spiderman, BTAS, X-men, JLU, anything I could get my hands on. Then I started getting the Batman and Supermand TPBs too.

Now keep in mind, I'm about 6 months behind to 1 year behind because I only get the TPBs.

My next breakthrough was with Ultimate Spiderman. It looked very kiddish, and the storylines were kinda kiddish, but something about them were so easy to read, look at, and addicting. I currently have to say that the Ulimate line is about as good as it gets to pick up and casually read.

Then I got into the EVENTS.

52 *****
Perfection

Countdown *
So far (this series really disappoints -- was Bart really dead here before he actually died in the Flash comics. WAY FREAKIN' LAME!)

Civil War *** I actually found the alternate takes to be better than the main story

Crisis on Infinate Earths ****

Infinate Crisis *** Keep punching that wall! The lead up was much more exciting.

House of M **

I love the set up for Secret Invasion though.

I just finished up Planet Hulk -- GREATNESS!!!

Watchmen was SWEET -- but the comic in the comic was way overkill. Would have been better in smaller doses. I get what they were doing, the execution was just drab. I also can totally see where they think Heroes steals the plot.

I'm pretty solid with DC/Marvel from about a year ago on back for the past 5 years or so, but am looking for non DC/Marvel books to hit now.

Any suggestions?

I really enjoy the humor in the Hellboy movie - and I'm looking forward to the new movie. Seems like the movies that I've seen so far that are adapted from comics are much better than the general action movies that have been coming out. Much more original and interesting.

I'd like to get my hands on the old Elfquest books. I remember giving some to my sister, who is 10 years younger than me, but that was in the early 90's and she no longer has them. I'll try and track them down, but I'll also look into the new ones you are describing.

I see all the conversations going on in this thread that there are so many comics to choose from. I'm going to take a field trip to the comics store this weekend and report back on what I saw there....I'm curious to see what I might get into. You never know.....

Ironman is amazing. I would go so far as to say it's the best Marvel movie to date.

#2 in my movies of the year list...right behind WALL*E (Ironman is #1 as far as rewatchability goes though).

Do you mean the old newspaper Star Wars strips that Dark Horse put out as comics and then as trades? Those were pretty good. I really enjoyed Marvel's run on Star Wars. Some of them were kind of hoaky, but some were really good too. They are available in 7 trade paperbacks from Dark Horse comics and they cleaned up the coloring in them and they look beautiful. Or, maybe you meant by Old Republic the Dark Horse comics they've been doing the past few years?

You liked Strikes Back more than Returns for Dark Knight? Wow, I think you are the first person to ever say that. What made you like it more? I admit I only read the first issue of Strikes Back. Frank Miller's Year One was excellent, pretty much what Batman Begins was based off of. Then of course there is Batman The Killing Joke by Alan Moore, great, great book.

If you liked Ultimate Spider-man did you read The Ultimates? Such an awesome book, same with the first 6 trades or so of Ultimate X-men, excellent reads.

OK, non-DC/Marvel books. I apologize folks for the lengthy post.

Fables. I recommend this book non-stop on here but it is SO good. Picture the fable and fairy tale characters you know and love from the stories you grew up with. Their homelands are suddenly being invaded by the Adversary, a fellow fable who suddenly goes mad with power. He captures them, kills some if they try to flee, even steals their magic so they can't rebel. Then one day they find out about a gateway to another world, our world, where the Adversary doesn't know about. So, they sneak into our world and live amongst us in New York. Snow White, Prince Charmin, Big Bad Wolf, Sleeping Beauty and so many more characters. The Adversary finally gets revealed (but I won't say who it is) and there are so many amazing story lines. If you get books from the library take the first trade out of this, Legends in Exile. If you like it, get the rest, each story arc builds and builds up to the next and so on. There was a spin off book called Jack of Fables. If you read Fables and get to the point where Jack spins off, then read it. But first start with Fables. I only hope I explained it enough to make you want to read it. I've gotten a few friends from on line to read this book and they loved it. I hope you will too.

Y:The Last Man. This book just ended, it's collected in 10 trades. A plague strikes the Earth wiping out all males except for one guy, Yorick, and his pet monkey ampersand. The first issue gets you hooked. Excellent book.

Sandman by Neil Gaiman. You got to read it to get it, but an excellent, excellent work. Gaiman is a brilliant writer.

League of Extraordinary Gentelmen. Don't let the movie sway you from the book. Alan Moore's books are amazing, there are 3 trades out right now.

Usagi Yojimbo. A ronin rabbit wanders Japan. Don't let the fact that they are animals throw you off. Usagi is one bad dude with that sword. This is an amazing book filled with some of the best comic stories ever written. There are over 22 trades in this series, and then a spin off, Space Usagi, which is awesome as well.

Maus. This book is an important book, not only to the comic genre cause it helps prove comics are not just for kids but can tell important stories, but it is an important book to the history of the Holocaust. A tough but important read.

Box Office Poison. A long trade, but so good. If you like the book or movie High Fidelity I think you will like this. A slice of life book.

Bone. This is a massive book, get the complete Bone trade, it's over 1,000 pages but is awesome. Imagine Disney made a Lord of the Rings story and you have Bone. Beautiful art, funny, moving. This book is loved in the comic world.

Scary Godmother. These are available as nice kids stories for Halloween and a comic series. If you like Nightmare Before Christmas this is the next best thing to a sequel.

Arrowsmith. Kurt Busiek wrote this story. It's an interesting story about WW1 and a young recruit who joins, only, in this story, dragons and trolls and vampires live in our world amongst us and take part in the war. This is a great story. It's 6 issues long and in a trade and the first time I read it I loved it.

I'd start with any or all of these.

Let me also just recommend Green Lantern. What Geoff Johns is doing with this book is brilliant, especially the Sinestro Corp Wars. If you like sci fi or Star Wars then the current Green Lantern is great.

One more.

Kingdom Come. Written by Mark Waid and painted by Aex Ross. A great story about what the out come of the world would be with DC heroes. I can't even begin to explain how good this is.

OK, sorry about the long post, I just love talking comics, as you can see! :D

If you have trouble finding the Elf Quest books you can try some on line stores for them. Midtowncomics.com is an excellent place to buy comics from. I buy from them when my local store doesn't have something and I have never had any trouble with them shipping me books.

Milehighcomics.com has a great selection as well. I've ordered from them in the past.

I also bought from a place in Fl called Demolition Comics. Their on line shopping worked great as well.

Yes, please report back what you find comic wise. If you have any comic questions or would like suggestions please let me know, I love to talk comics and am glad to help.

One more recommendation. The Starman Omnibus, Vol 1. It's sort of a non-superhero-superhero book. Let me explain.

Starman, Ted Knight (not the actor) has two sons and passes the torch to his son David, who gets killed while protecting Opal City. The killer targets Ted and his other son Jack. Jack Knight seeks revenge for his brother's killer, and once he does, reluctantly takes on the role of Starman. He is doing it for his father, but doesn't want to, he'd rather just sell stuff in his antique shop.

The book isn't written like a normal super hero book. You also don't need any prior knowledge to the character Staman cause James Robinson, the writer, explains what you need to know as you go. The stories are really good, the type of stuff Neil Gaiman or Alan Moore or even Frank Miller might come up with.

I bought the trade on a whim, read the first issue, and loved it and was hooked from then on. Now I'm waiting for the second Omnibus.
