Colored Money

Sorry, I didn't realise the word 'blind' was no longer politically correct. What exactly is wrong with the different size idea? These experiments you say the treasury carries out must cost huge amounts of money. If notes were different sizes, wear and tear wouldn't be a problem. I am not saying they are not addressing the problem, it just seems that there is an obvious solution and they are over-complicating the issue with bumpy notes that wear off!
Was I right in my assumption that with the current system, 'visually impaired' people have to rely on the honesty and good-will of others? This surely cannot be the best way!?

You don't have to be blind to not be able to recognize the money. I know people and I served people at WDW that have such poor eyesight that they can't make out the money.

- Watermark of presidents face inserted, visible when held to light

- Color shifting ink used in number on lower right of bill, when magnified, the ink sparkles

- Polymer thread running vertical in bill, with letters "USA" and the denomination of the bill which glows red under UV light source

- Micro printed words were added around the face on clothing, or the scroll work around the portrait, that will usually blur if photocopied or scanned (although some new scanner technology is now defeating the micro printing)

We have those features in our bills too... I don´t see why it´s such a big deal to change dollars a little according to the denomination!. The look easier to falsify than ours.... Our bills are actually cool! hehe :animwink:

Sorry, SteveUK. I didn't mean to infer anything against your choice of words. My choice of the term "visually impaired" was meant as toungue-in-cheek. When I wrote "what the rest of us call blind", I include myself in "us".:animwink:

I haven't read or seen anything put out by Treasury on them working with different size bills. I agree, it would be easier for the blind (either legally or completely) to tell different denominations. If I had to take a guess, they haven't considered it because of several reasons (here we go - another list :hurl: ).

- Once again, sheer volume of replacing currency. We are talking 10 billion notes a year just to replace what is destroyed or lost. NOT what stays in circulation.

- The impact on business. All cash drawers for all registers in the United States would have to be redone for the different sized bills. Not to mention all banks, savings & loans, credit unions, etc. There would be such an outcry from business, every member of congress would be getting nasty-grams about the unfair cost to american business.

Once again, those are just guesses on my part. After all, we're talking about a country of about 300,000,000 residents according to the last census, in a country slightly larger than all of western europe (I think - trying to remember high school geography). I see alot of people in the part of country where I live, who still don't trust banks. They do all transactions in cash, and bury their savings in the back yard. Seriously!

Once again, SteveUK, my apologies. I didn't mean to slam your post or infer you were using the wrong words.

No offence taken, sorry if I sounded harsh, just got in from bad day at work! Sorry!!
I realise it would be difficult to replace all the notes in circulation but isn't that what they are doing with the coloured ones? Instead of coloured ones, just produce slightly different sizes, a small difference would be a big help. Or coloured and different sizes? Or just replace the whole lot with Disney Dollars!?

The U.S. Treasury has experimented with different methods to help people who are visually impaired (what everyone calls blind). The problem they keep running into is the sheer volume of currency in the United States, and how much it is handled. The U.S. Treasury prints about 10 BILLION notes a year. Why so much? Because it is handled so much, that's how much they have to print to replace what is worn out or destroyed. They've tried putting raised bumps on the corner of bills, but under real world testing they tend to wear off after 60 days. But they are still working on finding something that will last under so much wear.

Also..about 5 years ago they were testing Holograms on money....and it held up very well......but it did not pass the crush test...the crush test is where you roll the bill up like a cigarette....then attach it to a small thin rod.....and then you jam it in a whole....it what looks to be a small anvil....and smash the heck out of it.......needless to say like after the 3rd crush test...the hologram was toast.........

anywhoo..the hologram was very cool...not tacky as one would think...but...very classy and futuristic....all prototype bills MUST make it thru like 5 runs of the crush test...with no major damage..... I think.:)

Does anyone know why the American flag is flying over the Canadian House of Parliament on their paper money? I don't, I was just asking.

Nut 4 Disney,

Many people have thought the same thing as you, why is there American flags on top of the Canadian Parliament Buildings? If you look closely you will notice its Canada's old flag, the Red Ensign. This flag includes the Royal Union Jack int the corner (what looks like the stars) and Canada's crest in the middle, but its really hard to see, so many people mistake it as the American Flag. This was used as Canada's flag untill 1965, thats when we got the maple leaf flag as our own national flag, and the Union Jack became our Royal Flag. I will try and find the site with this information on it. This year Canada is introducing new bills, none of which so far have had a flag on it, maybe to save confusion..........

Oh by the way, Bonne Fete/ happy birthday Canada!

I thought there would be more color though. The ink is still the same so it's not as drastic as I thought. Very cool, can't wait to get a hold of one :D

Apparently it is broke. The options to make our current bills "counterfiet-proof" are running out, and the crooks are getting around them. The colored money is the next logical step. And as for the more "official" look as stated earlier. That's only according to what us Americans are used to, and some opinion.

If it stops more crime, good, bring on the rainbow.....
