In defense of my cheap vanilla wafers, they are just as mediocre a cookie as the real Nilla wafers.


Now, for something serious. I KNOW! ME? serious? but it's true... I found out today that Kaitlyn's teacher died last night. And she was home sick today anyway, so I drove home and told her, and the weird thing is that she seems rather unaffected by it. For now, anyway. But they brought counselors into school to talk to the kids, and I'm wondering if I should take her in to talk to somebody, even though she seems like she's okay. Any thoughts?

Christy...if Kaitlyn doesn't understand "death" yet...then maybe you should try to explain it to her...I think it would be better for her to hear it from you than to hear it from someone at school that she may or may not deal with on a regular basis and be comfortable with...plus...you'd want her to be able to feel comfortable expressing her feelings and not feeling like she can't because she's in front of peers.

I think you should at least talk to a professional and maybe have them sit down with her for an hour. Kids that age are different than us. If she wasn't particularly close to the teacher (and it seems she wasn't) she's not going to have a great sense of loss.

The bigger concern is that kids that age are still developing their sense of how the world works. When something like that happens, they start to worry that the same thing will happen to mommy or daddy or someone else they love.

I think you need to assure her that, yes, sometimes poeple die, but all the people in her life are very healthy and not in any danger.

No, she knows what it means, I think maybe it just hasn't sunk in yet. For example, after 9/11, it wasn't until a few weeks after the fact that she began venting about it, and drawing pictures and things like that. So I guess I'll just wait it out and see how she deals with the next week... I think maybe once she gets back to school and her teacher's not there, it will "hit" her. I'm so sad. She was such a wonderful teacher... the woman had a master's degree in education, and was working for peanuts at a tiny catholic school in Michigan. She really loved what she did.

I agree with Brian. I would be as honest and straight-forward with her as best you can, using langauge that she will understand. And I think it's best coming from you and Daddy Mouse Madness.

We're not sure yet. She wasn't very old at all, I'd say maybe mid to late 50's. My other daughter's preschool teacher is the one who informed me, he said she hadn't been feeling well all last week, but wouldn't listen to anybody when they said to get to the doctor.

I've been very honest with her, told her in plain language what had happened, and she could talk if she wanted, but she has completely withdrawn, which is what Kaitlyn does. I just asked her again 5 minutes ago if she wanted to talk and she told me no and started to get teary. I'll just leave her alone for now, and see if she comes to me in her own time. She's been distracting herself all morning with coloring and reading, so we'll see later tonight when she's bored with that if she feels like saying anything.

Thanks guys. :wave: This is a lot heavier situation than I ever thought I'd be dealing with today.
