This week's photo was submitted by Ronald Steiner of Hollywood, Florida, who describes the circumstances surrounding the photo: "I was standing in front of Cinderella Castle facing East on November 16, 2009, at the time that the shuttle Atlantis was being launched. I saw the shuttle beyond Space Mountain and started shooting away as it went through the clouds. It seemed so appropriate to see the shuttle going into space beyond Space Mountain." [/FONT]

I just wanted to add that without Disney's help, we might not have seen the space program be the success that it became.

Actually, I think that photo must have been taken from the parking lot of the Contemporary.

So cool. We were there that day.

Has anybody besides me ever while in Magic Kingdom see the shuttle launch at night? That is an awesome sight. To see it go up like it is coming right out of Space Mountian is very cool.

I didn't know about this.. do you have more information?

Yes, before the U.S. landed on the moon, it was a political ambition of Kennedy as we all know, but before that, in 1955, there was still not a lot of enthusiastic public support for the space program.

So I don't recall the exact details, but Walt Disney created "Man in Space" and "Man and the Moon" which would portray the details of going into space. Here are some clips of Leonard Maltin explaining them:
