Changes to SSE

Honestly, I think SSE would look naked without the wand, now. Kinda like if they tore down the Sorceror's Hat, it wouldn't look right. But I think new narration, an updated script and "future" set, and some headrest padding is in order.

You think the Sorceror hat is an improvement? Maybe if it were installed outside the park before you reach the turnstiles. Perhaps we should stop doing the "Pimp my ride treatment to original Icons. Really, do we need plasma screens in the bumper this time?

To those complaining about roughness, I agree. I vote Disney voids the Siemens deal and signs a deal with La-Z-Boy. Wouldn't it be awesome riding on that track in a nice comfy recliner?

As for those who are wanting change of omnimover system, lets cut out a hole on the side of the building and extend the Test Track track over and we can all ride up and down on cars. Wouldn't that be awesome too?

I doubt SSE is likely to see such dramatic changes anytime soon. I am all for more padding on the vehicles, that thing hurts almost as much as Back to the Future at Universal.

As for change of narrator, if they change the ride enough to need a new narrator, how about we go with either Morgan Freeman or the guy that plays the president on 24 (also appears in Allstate commercials....don't know his name).
Morgan Freeman would be a great replacement....

I think the Hat looks great and it's in the right spot...

And what do you mean with "original" icons...

The Hat always will and always has been THE icon of Walt Disney Feature
Animation...

And YES we NEED plasma screens... or get stuck in the past...

Why don't we remove all the rides and bring back the bumper cars... these are original to... or let's return to those hoovercraft things...

Progress... is what it's now... Doe-eyed dolls just doesn't cut it for kids raised on Quake and MTV.

It takes a whole lot more to wow teens these days. The sophistication of the audience, and their expectations, increases every year."

Mr. Corrus, I did not mean to offend.

All I am saying is that lately, in my opinion, there has been a little too much "bling" added to objects of beauty. It all started with some pink icing and inflatable frosting a few years back.

I don't think the majority of kids today would have trouble appreciating the beauty and iconic nature of Mann's Chinese theatre. Give them a little credit.

As an Architect I think I have a little experience dealing with scale, placement, and design, as well as being capable of forming an opinion. We all have opinions, just like navels. My opinion, is that the Sorcerer hat is misplaced, and a slap to the face of the original designers of the weenie that once represented Disney MGM Studios.

By the way, I have nothing against plasma screens. I have three of them and I use them to watch MTV and play Quake.

Bet you wish Thrawn was here to help you give me a verbal kick in the back side. Chill out.

And ofcourse you've got the right on your own opinion... :D :D

I wouldn't need any help and certainly not from Thrawn... BTW... This wasn't even a verbal kick... If I should do that, you wouldn't get the chance to even write another word...

Replace the omnimover system with the ride system used in Journey Into Your Imagination.

1) Omnimovers are best for moving large amounts of guests through attractions. SSE doesn’t have very long lines in these days.
2) Omnimovers favors quantity over quality. There are too many areas of dead space that I wish I could skip through, the JIYI ride system would do this wonderfully.
3) No more 60-second sporadic stops every time granny wants to get on her favorite ride.
4) No more out of sync audio.
5) No more shaking from the absence of motor shocks, or whatever causes this.

Just a few things that popped up:

One of the main reasons SSE does not have longer lines is because of the omnimover system. Not that it would be posting 120 minute lines, but if the capacity was reduced significantly (which the IMAG system would do), the lines would increase dramatically. I am not saying that is a bad idea. Just wanted to point that out.

Also, Corrus, have to disagree with one slight statement you made. I will certainly agree that the attractions of yesteryear will not pull in the younger crowds and teens. HOWEVER, I will not go as far as to say it has ANYTHING to do with sophistication. I will agree that it takes more glitz and special effects to impress children, but I don't equate that with sophistication. Unfortunately, it seems the long-lived attractions of the past won't work because society has an attention span of 3.8 minutes. We are constantly bombarded and want constant change. Therefore, cheap and easy is the way of attractions because you will have to remake them soon anyway. Does that mean greatly thought out attractions won't work, of course not (and I will predict EE will be an example of that), but it takes more careful planning and execution than before. Disney is about perfection in the guest's eye, so that is the bar. It takes a lot more to wow when perfection is the baseline compared with the "that new Disney thing" standard. It's about business decisions, but those decisions should not be based on trends because trends are so short-lived now that taking a chance on creative genius may once again be the way to go. Finding a way that is creative at its bones and allows for quick, fast updating as technology and current themes change will be the key. That will be quite pricey, however.
*** off my soapbox

(Also, please note I am not talking from some pedestal here. I am only 23. I grew up with Nintendo AND Epcot, and came out preferring the second - although my Nintendo love was QUITE deep as a kid. I am definitely in a different generation than current kids, but I'm not that far removed. Short attention span doesn't create an excuse for cheap, fast products, IMHO, I guess is my only point).

About the ride system, I heard that if they try to alter the track at all, they are seriously jeopardizing the integrity of the entire building, since the structure is actually supported by the track. That's why there's been no significant changes in the track layout/type. I know its unDisney to say impossible, but it's highly improbable to make any major change to the SSE track while keeping Epcot open (since everyone has to pass underneath the ball).

As for all this classic vs. new talk, I really think there's a great way they can do both. Cronkite's narration can be interpreted to fit today (and tomorrow's) technology, and they can spiff up the ride to add a lot more. IMO, They really don't need to change any of the first 1/2 of the ride (except to add "NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY" to the safety spiel).

Of course, if Cronkite doesn't work, how about Patrick Stewart?

As an architect, I can tell you that your opinion is flawed, but then what do I know, I'm just an architect.

Very true. And as far as opinions go, I have been a lurker here for a long time and value your opinion (except for this time). Thank you for the attention and reply. It is great to know there is so much passion for a place we know and love. Happy Thanksgiving!

Enhancements? Hmmmm....

1.) Better audio.
2.) Improve AAs.
3.) New narrator. I love the guy who does it now (and his name escapes me), but I think a new narrator would be sweet. Stephen Fry anyone?
4.) New end scene. Internet teleconfrencing? pppbbbbbbbttttt! Talk to anyone who has an iSight and uses it. Think big now people.
5.) Return the astronaughts to the top of the ride!

LET IT BE NOTED: I disagree... :D

You know what the funny thing is Corrus, I like the hat but hate the wand. I'm hoping they come to their senses and take it down SOON. But I guess there are more important things to complain about than a stinkin' wand over SSE...*shrugs*

Whatever Disney changes, I certainly hope that they do not get rid of the white horse and chariot film loop.

I don't know what it is about this feature, but I get a kick out of it.

I hope they refurb it, but I'd perfer that they didn't bring back the Cronkite narration or Tomorrow's Child. The Cronkite narration made it sound like a boring lecture, while the Jeremy Irons one adds some mysterious and mystical qualities to it.

ROFL!

I vote Bill Shatner! He actually, come to think of it, would a fine narrator make.

"But will...these seemingly infinite communications...become...a...flood...of...electronic...babble?..."

(by the by, the "..." represent dramatic pauses, and the italicized represent dramatic stresses)

The last time I rode SSE, I could have sworn I saw the briefest snippet of the "3..2..1" countdown that comes when that film loop starts over. It was either that or a white circular registration mark at the beginning of the film. It took me out of the ride for just a moment...

 This would be awesome!

More than anything else, this ride needs an ending. A couple of cool special effects in the beginning and middle part wouldn't hurt, either.
