Changes at DTD

Doesn't sound like Legoland ticked Disney off too much. I really doubt the DTD location will close. The money is too good. Plus, most tourists do not have a dedicated Lego store to shop at back home, so it works as a unique draw to DTD.

We were just there last weekend, and ATTEMPTED to check out the Lego store. Was pretty much impossibe - line for checkout wrapped pretty much half way around the store...place was packed. I wouldn't think Disney would want to get rid of such a popular place - popular for my family, pretty much the only reason my son likes to go to DTD - but then, they are getting rid of the McDonalds, which seems pretty crowded much of the time, too.......

I think ImaYoyo, who started this thread, bringing us great hopes for Pleasure Island, owes us an explanation. There is NOTHING happening out there!

And JT, the person with an answer for everything, you too!

Well, let's see... The hot air balloon ride opened... Parasido 37 opened.. McDonald's closed with a new chicken place opening this year... Planety Hollywood shop closed... Virgin megastore closed...

I think changes ARE coming, and ARE happening.. just slowly... Geez, this thread is not even a year old... Give the guys a break...

NOT Pleasure Island

One restaurant and one balloon does not make a bold new vision.

No break deserved!

I forgot all about McDonald's closing. Man, Dtd has sure gone downhill. Last time i went was last July I think, but with the way things have changed I don't see me wanting to go back anytime soon.

The title of the thread is about DTD however the focus by the OP was on upcoming announcements about Pleasure Island. Except for Paradiso, nothing that you mentioned is on Pleasure Island and the addition of Paradiso was coming anyway regardless of the closed clubs. What has so many people upset is that we're nearly 2 years since the clubs were closed down yet every one of them sits empty with no indication that they're going to be rebuilt into something else.

Having finally seen where Characters in Flight is located, calling that Pleasure Island is a stretch. The dock connects to the West Side, not Pleasure Island. Its implementation would in no way have been affected by the clubs being open. For something to count towards this bold new vision, in my book, then its implementation must be dependent on the clubs being closed. Changing out shops in the Marketplace and on the West Side would not have been affected by the clubs staying open. I know the argument has been made that the clubs hurt the West Side, but when it comes to retail developments not much is worse than dead space.

I would love to know how Disney's existing lessees have been reacting to all of this closed space. I cannot imagine that they are pleased.

One thing that also surprises me is that Disney continues to only offer bus service to Pleasure Island and the Marketplace. Having some sort of transportation to the West Side would make that weenie-less alley much more appealing and may help to take some pressure off of the Marketplace.

They've added a bunch of new things to DTD as of late...

Paradisio 37 (2009)
Tren-D (2009)
D-Street (2010)
Ridemakerz (2010)
Polo Campero (coming soon)
Littlemissmatched (2010)

I'm sure there is plenty more planned but just based on that list new stuff is coming in fairly frequently. I'm sure something is being considered for the old clubs...

Thats 4 times the hammering than is being done at Pleasure Island

prolly even more! the changes being defended here are really a stretch. AND HARDLY BOLD. much less even worth a bus trip during my vacation.

what disney has done to a once unique and enjoyable spot is a joke. defending it is worse- i mean, it's really hard to sip that much kool aid and not get worried about a sugar coma.

i can go to many malls throughout this nation and experience empty and carbon copied retail locations. disney USED TO BE BETTER. USED TO.

as a dvc member, we now try to book boardwalk on our adult trips- imagine disney still catering to something other than families.... at least there's still some entertainment there at a later hour. if we stay elsewhere, we need to pay for a taxi.

they used to keep the rif raf out with turnstyles, but some survey said "we" didn't want them. it interupted the experience going from west side to the marketplace. bs. west side was never THAT big of a draw.

it was a poor setup putting pi in the middle- no doubt. but scrapping pi is like ditching a great attraction just because they put it in the wrong spot. too much of pi was too unique to just simply throw in the trash.

one poor management decision followed by another.

That's what I've been saying for years. It was one knee-jerk reaction after another.

One simple solution could have been armbands... Those who paid to get into the clubs would have an armband or ticket that they would have to show to get into the clubs while everyone else wanting to go to West Side could just walk through. It would have been that simple...

Again, looks at your list.

Pleasure Island
Marketplace
West Side
West Side
Marketplace
West Side

That is one addition to Pleasure Island, and Paradiso 37 did not even replace one of the clubs that were closed. Two of these additions are Disney operated, which is the opposite of the announced plan. If Downtown Disney is such a desirable location then why are the club spaces still vacant and why is Disney having to open up shops? Lastly, Ridemakerz is currently slated as being temporary.
