People thought Darth Iger was bad, Wait till they meet Chancellor Murdoch...

Always two there are...

One reason for this deal is Murdoch has distribution rights in China, where Disney does not have them.

Iger will go down as the best CEO since Walt. After bringing Fox into the fold he will have added Pixar, Lucas films, Marvel and now Fox. He will also have almost completely reunited Marvel. What's left? Spiderman and Hulk, full movie rights and the contract with Universal. Remember the Simsons are under contract with Universal and used in both American Parks and may be used abroad. That annual payments could be traded for something Disney wants.

The parks are being expanded all over the world and making more money than ever. Movies and Terlevision will be making a fortune and Disney can massively improve Fox's royalties from merchandise sales. This is a great win for Iger and Disney. All that is left is one good trade with Universal.

Before the ignorant speculation about the possible Disney purchase of Fox surrounding reuniting the X-Men with Marvel or laughingly thinking they will trade something to Universal for theme park rights the real “big deal” about this possible “big deal” is hidden in plain sight.

Disney will acquire Fox’s regional sports networks. Check and see just how incredibly valuable that it, and how much of a much needed infusion it would be for the struggling ESPN. Now remember, that’s not Fox’s FS1, Disney will not acquire that in the purchase.

The New York regional sports market alone is probably more valuable than any of the film IP’s in Fox’s library.

Didn’t Iger say he was going to fix ESPN? This move would be huge. Really huge.

Fox news is not included in the deal. Also it was ABC that issued a story last week which wasn' true and led to a loss of 350 down points before most intelligent people realized it was a lie. The news media is horrible in this country and to just complain about those on the right is just plain wrong. The deal with Fox is a good one and while we both love the Parks and Resorts Division we should both agree with the facts that Hollywood is full of scandal and that the news media is no longer what it is supposed to be, truth tellers of facts and not opinions.

I know that, and I wasn't referring to Fox News. More the reputation of the Murdochs resulting from some of Fox's other holdings...think overseas. I don't think Disney would want their Family Friendly brand associated with that.

Since when does owning 25% of a company mean you can dictate how it's run? Even if decisions were made by stock percentage vote, Fox would only have 25% of the votes.

"For the next CEO being James Murdoch: 25% vote aye; 75% vote nay."

And despite it being a movie trope, owning 51% of the company still doesn't mean you can do whatever you want with it.

A majority position in a company typically means holdings of at least 15-20%.

Wish I could find the link to the Bloomberg article I read earlier. It was really comprehensive. Personally, I think the acquisition of regional sports markets, especially for baseball, is great. As far as bringing in Fox's super hero universe into Marvel, eh, not my thing. But that Disney will own ALL the SW movies, including distribution of the first 6, that I'm excited for.

Given that this merger/buyout will take several months, keeping Iger through the process wouldn't be unheard of.

Interesting it's a WSJ article...and it won't load.
Merger shouldn't take past 2019.

This trial balloon shows how inept to nonexistent the DIS succession plan is.

Iger has officially developed a rudderless succession plan without even a paddle to a stear the boat.

Iger's plan for the future is about Iger and Iger alone.

In fairness Iger has been marvelous for the stock price, the rest well...
And for a business that is the goal. The problem is how they go about getting it. So far, apparently all the evils that are spewed out about Iger, have not affected business in a negative way, only positive. At what point do we recognize and understand that all the talk about how awful he is, doesn't mean squat until things go the other way. Until then he is extremely successful. And all of us that say otherwise are either guessing or so highly clairvoyant that we know the future. It must be frustrating to keep predicting the downfall of Disney parks only to have it going on and on and on. Either he is wrong or we are. Seems like he has the edge at this point.

He was really good at building up their IP, at the expense of everything else. I'm really surprised the board didn't force him to liquidate ESPN years ago. They'd be in a much stronger position today if they hadn't had to keep it afloat over the years.
