Celebrating Christmas at the Cape: A December 2009 Trip Report

Woohooo… Christmas at Disney World. Is there any better way to celebrate the season?!

I’m a little late posting, but that’s because about a week after we returned from Disney we left again… this time for a New Year’s Eve cruise! Now that I’m back and reality has set in, I’m excited to relive all our adventures through both trip reports! It’s hard to believe after just over a year of trip reporting I’m typing up my sixth installment. I really enjoy writing up the reports when we return and I even create printouts in publisher when they’re finished. So, if anyone is interested, the previous Disney reports should all still be intact:

Living the Life at the Contemporary: A September 2008 Trip Report
The Making of Disney Dreams and Christmas Memories: A December 2008 Trip Report
Going the Distance… From Mile 1 to 26.2: A Marathon 2009 Trip Report
Lodge-hopping from the Pacific Northwest to an African Savannah: A July 2009 Trip Report

Now let’s get to the latest… our Christmas 2009 trip report! Tacky t-shirts, pixie dust upgrades, and santa hats all make an appearance this holiday season! For those of you who aren’t familiar with us, the cast includes myself, Holly, and my boyfriend, Brett. Both Disney freaks and young at heart. Also with us for the annual Christmas trip are Brett’s parents, Kathy and Danny, and his brother, Derek. A Disney family for sure!

From left, Derek, Brett, myself, Goofy, Kathy and Danny:

This trip kind of snuck up on us. Brett’s been working in Atlanta for the past four months so my countdown was focused more on him coming home than it was on Disney. Disney was certainly the icing on the cake! Our trip was planned for Sunday, December 13-Friday, December 18 at the Beach Club Villas, but Brett and I decided to head down a day early and stay at Caribbean Beach for one night.

Guess who's adding going to a dvc mixer to her list? I didn't know there were character there.

At first when you mentioned George Michael and Maebe, I only read the George Michael and was thinking Wham until I figured it out. I love that show!

Also dining with us at our table were two teenagers across the way. In trying to figure out the dynamic, Brett and I decided they reminded us of George Michael and Maeby of Arrested Development fame. :ROFLOL: Only the roles were reversed (for those of you unfamiliar with Arrested Development, that’s what Netflix is for... check it out)!

"And that's his cousin, Maeby..."

That would be really entertaining over dinner. I loved the Goofy picture! I love seeing the characters, well, in character.

Fun trip report!! You two remind us of ourselves. My fiance and I are always trying new signature restaurants. We LOVE Cali Grille. The whole ambiance and feel puts a smile on our face. Plus the wine list is huge. That is one place we always eat at every year. Have you two ever eaten at Victoria&Alberts? We are thinking of added this to our next trip. The new room that has been added looks awesome to dine in.

First & foremost, how did I not realize this was your TR??? I've kept up with several others always skipping this one. The bright side to my oversight is less waiting for updates. LOL!

You lucky ducks! We've talked about staying at the YC a lot but now I reeaally wanna stay here! The room is gorgeous!

I'm really starting to develop a 'thing' for the 'munks. Love that their 'mallows are toasty already.

After we got the car unloaded and suitcases unpacked, Brett and I decided to go ahead and give his mom a Christmas gift from us. The first part of the gift was a scrapbook of last year’s Christmas trip. Not exactly a surprise to anyone; however, the second part certainly was. To fully grasp the importance of this gift you have to understand that every single time we pass a family in a park that is wearing matching t-shirts, Kathy goes on and on about how cute it is and insists upon us doing it. The thing is… the rest of us balk at the idea and insist just as strongly that it’ll never happen. Over time it has become quite a joke and we’ve convinced her we’d never ever be on board with the idea. At some point during our July trip, Brett and I decided we’d gift her matching t-shirts for Christmas because she’d never expect it. It was so worth it… Kathy was so freaking excited when she opened up the box! Seeing that we didn’t warn Danny or Derek of the impending doom… their reactions were a little more subdued!! And much more fun to watch.

Wowzers! That place is so pretty!

What setting did you use for the model pic??? I love that & wanna see if Chandler's Rebel that Santa brought him will do it.

Oh..now..matching shirts aren't so horrible. They're like Mickey ears: anywhere other than WDW you'd look like a complete nut wearing such. It's something special for trips to the 'happy place'. It's sweet of y'all to humor Kathy. What does it say under the characters on your shirts?

Each shirt featured a character and nickname (to a degree). Danny’s (Mr. Moneybags) featured Scrooge McDuck for the obvious reasons; Derek’s (Beefy) featured Hercules because of the nickname Brett adorned him with back when he started working out all the time; Kathy’s (Kitty Kat) featured Tigger because he’s one of her favorites and represents her love of all things Clemson; Brett’s (#%@&$!) featured Donald because he and the Duck share the same sentiments about having to wear matching t-shirts; and mine (#1 Tink Fan) featured Tinkerbell because Brett’s parents (especially Danny) get the biggest kick out of my complete and total distaste for all things Tink.

Tracey shares his temperament w/Donald & that quote sounds just like him when he's on one of his many rants. I love it! I may need to borrow this idea for future use. LOL!

Miss Bunny was doing meet and greets when we got there and eventually she switched out with Thumper. Back when the news got out that Thumper and Miss Bunny would be arriving at the Animal Kingdom, I was extremely puzzled. I mean… Thumper, yes. Great new character! But when you mention Thumper, the next character that comes to mind is Flower. I just don’t understand why they created a Miss Bunny when Flower would have been the perfect companion for meet and greets with Thumper. Oh well… I should just be thankful there’s some new blood around!

IMG_0495.jpg

Dang! That's her name! We saw the pair while there & the kids were asking me but I couldn't remember. Ugh! I agree, Flower woulda been waaaay better to see with Thumper.

Brian soooo wanted to do the Animation Academy. I wish we had more time. Your Jiminy is awesome!

I liked the Sum of All Thrills a lot. I was glad it was a short ride, tho. Brian gave us 4 inversions! Eeeek!

OMG! Soooo awesome you got this painting! I had decided before we went on our recent trip that my big purchase for me was gonna be the Beauty & the Beast painting I've drooled over for so long. We searched high & low to no avail. Our last stop was the Art of Disney at DTD but it was gone. I was so sad. One look around and Tracey asked if I liked anything else. I told him the only other piece I'd own was the one you two picked! But I quickly threatened great bodily harm if he bought it. There's no sense in settling if they didn't have my 1st choice. I'm so glad y'all got the Stitch, tho. The story he's reading is special to me.

Early entry at the MK is my favorite thing to do every trip. I love it so.

And you made it to Crystal Palace! Glad y'all liked it!

I love random strolling pics. I take 'em often because I do spend much time with that view. It's comforting to me. I like to see others strolling along, too.

Would you believe I’ve never been over to Tom Sawyer Island in all of my travels to WDW? This is about as close as I’ve gotten:

IMG_1164_1.jpg

What camera did you get??? The color is to die for in your pics!

Sadly, Tom Sawyer's Island is another thing the boys wanted to do but we didn't have time. I've not been over there since I was 12 or so...daaang...that's 23 years ago...more than half my life has passed...

When we got into the arcade we saw these two. I thought they were really cute simply because they were close to scale:

IMG_1212_1.jpg

The vinylmations are growing on me. I bought 2 Cutesters series and threatened to buy a whole tray! LOL!

It’s the separate paintings of Donald and Daisy where he’s holding out a drooping flower and she has her back turned, as if to say “Hmmmmmppphhhh!”
Well, turns out they were a limited edition set and are no longer available. Bummer. The only one left is the original Daisy. I find it so sad that someone out there bought the original Donald, but didn’t get Daisy, too. She’s still on display at the Art of Disney. Here she is, yours for only $4,000.

Titled: “The Lady Will Have None of It”

IMG_0836_1.jpg

I loved those! Whoever split them up is just wrooooong!!!!

I saw these crispy treats at several locations while we were just there which grossed me out. They're obviously oooold...although my logical mind knows they have a longer shelf life. LOL!

Of the 2 character pics my vote for a Christmas card shot is Chip-n-Dale! Y'all are so stinkin' adorable!!!

I'm glad I found your report, Holly. I've been in a bad funk since we got home and was avoiding writing while my glass felt half empty. It's feeling more half full now so maybe soon you'll see me start to lay out our recent adventure. Thanks for the inspiration....again! Loving your report. Thanks just doesn't do it justice this time. (((hugs)))

Dadgummit! I forgot to comment on the scared little guy at Splash! I soooo feel his pain. When I was oh like 6 or so BTMRR was new. My dad & his sister took me, my big brother, & a slightly younger cousin to WDW. My dad wanted to ride BTMRR but not alone. My aunt wasn't doing it. He tried talking each of us kids into riding but we were all too scared. Dad was irritated & announced that if someone didn't ride with him we were going home. I soooo didn't want to leave. The two boys standing there with me weren't going to do it so it was up to me. Reluctantly, I stepped up to make the sacrifice. The whole way thru the line I cried & trembled, listened to lots of strangers tell me I'd like it, and clung to Dad. When the ride finally started that loud 1st lift was it for me. Loud noises terrified me. We reached the summit of the 1st lift & I wrapped my arms around the lap bar, closed my eyes tight, & screamed hysterically thru the entire ride. I was absolutely certain I was not going to survive, that I was going to die on that runaway mine train. Of course I didn't. Eventually it stopped & could get off the train to hell. I was a blubbering mess with my face all red & swollen, my voice raspy & hoarse. I didn't ride that ride or anything that even resembled a coaster until I was 13. Then the only reason I dared try it again was on a bribe. The drop in Pirates even terrified me for a looong time. Dad regretted making me ride since the moment that terrible train started to roll that day. I'm glad the CM rescued that poor little boy. I wish he/she coulda rescued him from his not-too-bright mother. The poor little thing. :(

Nearing the end and the excitement continues to build!

I like rice crispy treats...but those packaged ones are a pile of sugar with a few rice crispies to provide a base....just too sweet for my taste!

Character photo's at the mixer were outstanding! Definite keepers.

When waiting for Osborne lights, I like to mingle around mid street. Mulch Sweat and Shears usually does a last set there of only their Christmas music, and its a great irreverent segue to the lighing of the street.

Yeah... I have to kind of agree with you about the sweetness of the rice krispie treats. Those were actually the first ones we've ever gotten. We've never actually bought any for ourselves.

Thanks for the info about Mulch, Sweat and Shears... didn't know they were out there that late in the day.

This picture is totally adorable!!

I'm so sad your report is almost over!! Reading it was such a great way to eat up time at work. Oh well. Looking forward to the rest!

Thanks! And don't tell anyone... but I burn time at work the same way.

Guess who's adding going to a dvc mixer to her list? I didn't know there were character there.

At first when you mentioned George Michael and Maebe, I only read the George Michael and was thinking Wham until I figured it out. I love that show!

Yep. And truth be told, after we met the characters we were out of there. The area started getting way too packed. It's definitely worth getting there early.

Wham?! That's awesome!

No there is no much better way to celebrate christmas on disney land. We had plan for last year. But snow fall wash it and we celebrate christmas at our house.

Yeah... celebrating the season at Disney is lots of fun. But in all honesty, I much prefer celebrating Christmas day at home!

"And that's his cousin, Maeby..."

That would be really entertaining over dinner. I loved the Goofy picture! I love seeing the characters, well, in character.

It certainly kept Brett and I entertained!

I don't know what it was about the mixer, but the characters were definitely all at their best!

Considering your love for the California Grill, if you haven't tried it yet, you should check out The Wave at the Contemporary. They've done something fairly novel with the wine list... they're all southern hemisphere wines with screw tops. The food is delicious and not quite as expensive as the signature restaurants.

We haven't tried V&A's. Maybe one day!

Now I'm going to have to start patiently waiting for your report!

You lucky ducks! We've talked about staying at the YC a lot but now I reeaally wanna stay here! The room is gorgeous!

I'll admit, we really do have some crazy Disney luck. I was so blown away by the YC room and can't wait to go back.

I'm really starting to develop a 'thing' for the 'munks. Love that their 'mallows are toasty already.

Good to hear... I love the chipmunks! They're just so full of fun and mischief.

Wowzers! That place is so pretty!

What setting did you use for the model pic??? I love that & wanna see if Chandler's Rebel that Santa brought him will do it.

It was just a regular picture that I edited in photoshop. The effect is described as tilt/shift. It works best when used on a picture that is taken from above the subject. I created some fun ones of Jamaica and Nassau, that were taken from atop a cruise ship! It's quite easy to do. I used the following tutorial for photoshop CS3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmFy_bTE460

If you don't use CS3 you can probably find a tutorial for whatever program you do have.

Tracey shares his temperament w/Donald & that quote sounds just like him when he's on one of his many rants. I love it! I may need to borrow this idea for future use. LOL!

I guess you're right... those shirts were actually kinda fun to wear. I'm not a fashionista by any means, but I think it's the Daisy Duck in me that prefers not to wear matching t's! I do enjoy putting together my Disney "outfits" for our trips.

Underneath the characters it basically says Disney Family Christmas 2009. I can see Tracey rocking the Donald quote! Go for it. :sohappy:

Dang! That's her name! We saw the pair while there & the kids were asking me but I couldn't remember. Ugh! I agree, Flower woulda been waaaay better to see with Thumper.

Yeah... she's practically a made up character!

Brian soooo wanted to do the Animation Academy. I wish we had more time. Your Jiminy is awesome!

That's Brett's Jiminy. He's quite proud of himself!

I liked the Sum of All Thrills a lot. I was glad it was a short ride, tho. Brian gave us 4 inversions! Eeeek!

I agree, I thought it was a fun little addition to Innoventions. And I'm glad it was a short ride, too, but for other reasons.

Which Beauty and the Beast one were you wanting to get? Was it the portrait of Belle? Or the one where she and the Beast are dancing? Definitely my favorite princess movie.

I'm with you on the Ugly Duckling... my favorite scene of the movie. I like the painting so much because I think the artist captured the emotion of Stitch and the movie as a whole.

Early entry at the MK is my favorite thing to do every trip. I love it so. And you made it to Crystal Palace! Glad y'all liked it!

I love random strolling pics. I take 'em often because I do spend much time with that view. It's comforting to me. I like to see others strolling along, too.

Yeah... I love that picture! I really like how Kathy caught us as we were going over the bridge to Liberty Square. And I didn't even know she had taken it until I uploaded her pictures when the trip was over.

What camera did you get??? The color is to die for in your pics!

After lots of research I treated myself to the Rebel XSI. I got it about 2 weeks before the trip and only had the kit lens with me. I used manual modes the whole trip and shot in .CR2 files (RAW). I edited them somewhat in photoshop and in some cases bumped up the color.

Me too!!! I'm really wanting the whole muppet series!

I loved those! Whoever split them up is just wrooooong!!!!

Agreed! I'm actually still mourning the fact that we can't pick them up on a future trip. They'd make for such great "his and hers" painting on either side of a master bedroom/bathroom.

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of the treats. I think we still have one in the refrigerator. Might be time to throw that out.

You can always count on Chip and Dale for great photo ops!

(((hugs)))

AWw... thanks! I can't wait to hear all about your trip, your stay at the AKL and so much more. I'll be waiting for the adventure to begin. I think you'll find the glass fill back up as you relive the trip through writing. Or at least, that's how I always feel.

Dadgummit! I forgot to comment on the scared little guy at Splash! I soooo feel his pain. When I was oh like 6 or so BTMRR was new. And now... on with the end.

Day 7 – Friday, December 18: Magic Kingdom/Departure Day

On Friday morning, Brett and I packed up the last of our stuff and handed it off to bell services. Then we all made our way to the Polynesian for one last breakfast at the Kona Café. Mmm… I can just taste the Tonga toast now! Not only did I get to enjoy Tonga toast, but I found my POG juice in disguise! Kona calls it Lilikoi juice, but it’s the same stuff Stitch serves over at Ohana. Hooray!!

IMG_1639_1.jpg

IMG_1644_1.jpg

IMG_1647_1.jpg

After breakfast, Brett and I said our goodbyes and thank you’s to his family. They were heading back to the villa to pack up and get on the road. Brett and I wandered around the Poly for a little bit checking out the gingerbread houses on display. Here are my two favorites:

IMG_1635_1.jpg

IMG_1649_1.jpg

If I weren’t so full from breakfast, I’d have snagged one of these breakfast pastries from Kona Island on our way out. That place is so conveniently located!

IMG_1633_1.jpg

Once on the monorail we realized there were still about 30 minutes before the Magic Kingdom was supposed to open so we hopped off at the Grand Floridian to burn some time.

IMG_1652_1.jpg

IMG_1654_1.jpg

As we made our way down to the main floor we noticed a film crew and lights around the gingerbread house. Smack in the middle of it all were Mickey and Goofy! Apparently, there was going to be some kind of live local news segment on the gingerbread creations at Disney and they were having issues with the feed. They had to be ready as soon as it was fixed, but guests were allowed to meet with the characters while they were waiting. Fun!

The gingerbread house makes for a great backdrop:

We got to the MK just as the park was opening and the place was practically empty. Stitch was hanging out on Main Street and waving to park goers as they passed by:

IMG_1662_1.jpg

We grabbed fastpasses for Space Mountain and then hopped in a honey pot over in Fantasyland. After the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh we went to watch my favorite 3D attraction: Philharmagic!

IMG_1669_1.jpg

IMG_1671_1.jpg

IMG_1676_1.jpg

It had started raining by the time we exited the show. It always seems to rain on the last day of our trips… as if the weather knows it’s a sad, sad day! :( We rode some more of the rides in Fantasyland and then headed back to Toontown for a bit. Then we somehow ended up in line for Stitch’s Great Escape. As much as I love the little blue guy, his ride really is quite bad.

We rode the Tomorrowland Transit Authority and then hit up Space Mountain for one last time.

The rain let up enough for the 11:00 am Move It, Shake It, Celebrate It party to go on as planned. We caught it while waiting in line to meet Daisy Duck. I still find some of the character choices to be a bit strange. Mr. Incredible, Frozone and Baloo and Louie just seem a bit odd with the rest of the mix.

Still not ready to leave, Brett and I worked our way back into the park. In Adventureland I grabbed a dole whip while Brett went on a Hawaiian rollercoaster ride with Lilo and Stitch.

IMG_1738.jpg

So throughout the whole morning we were discussing whether or not we should try to get a room at one of the values and stay for one more night. Neither one of us had anything pressing to get back to on Saturday so we were thoroughly tempted. We discussed this as we canvassed the park from Adventureland to Frontierland, through Liberty Square and Fantasyland. We still hadn’t made up our minds when we found ourselves back on Main Street, so we stopped at the Confectionary and picked up some snacks on our way out.

We got off the monorail at the Contemporary and took some pictures of the Christmas decorations before making our way back to the Beach Club.

IMG_1747_1.jpg

IMG_1742_1.jpg

Once back at the Beach Club we headed out to the Boardwalk to find something to eat. We grabbed some pizza from the Boardwalk pizza window and tried to make a decision. Neither of us wanted to go home, but we decided it was time. We were so, so close to pulling the trigger on another night. But it just wasn’t in the cards. We did, however, promise ourselves that next year we’d add a day or two to the end of our holiday trip with his family.

It was a sad walk back to the Beach Club to get our luggage. Even sadder was the sight of bell services with our luggage.

Booo… time to load up the car and say goodbye.

IMG_1749_1.jpg

IMG_1750_1.jpg

Buh-bye Beach Club.

When discussing options for next December's trip, Brett and I suggested BLT for our resort stay and Kathy seemed to like the idea. I've been dying to get back to the Contemporary ever since we stayed there September 2008. So we're keeping our fingers crossed it'll happen!

Before that though will hopefully be two more trips. Currently we have a short March trip in the works for the Princess Half Marathon and we'll probably try for a Food & Wine 2010 trip, too. Woohoo... :sohappy:

For those of you who have continued to read and post... I really appreciate it. Thanks so much!!

**sigh** I had hoped this was a camera trick for 2 reasons: 1. After posting my question to you I showed the pic to Tracey and he said, "It looks like it's done with a lens or Photoshop. I bet it's Photoshop." I hate when he's right! 2. I have Photoshop Elements on my laptop which is officially FUBAR'd in a big way. Gotta send it off to get it de-sickened. Grrrrr...

Which Beauty and the Beast one were you wanting to get? Was it the portrait of Belle? Or the one where she and the Beast are dancing? Definitely my favorite princess movie.

It's called 'Bittersweet Embrace'. Here it is on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260523684243&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I'm with you on the Ugly Duckling... my favorite scene of the movie. I like the painting so much because I think the artist captured the emotion of Stitch and the movie as a whole.

Truer words, my friend. You nailed it.

I can see why, I just wish we had had more time before our actual reservation. And the Crystal Palace was a pleasant surprise for me.

I'm prob'ly going to Disney h-e-double-hockey-sticks but I'll show up a few minutes late for breakfast to savor my magical Main Street moments. Yes, I'm the girl you love to hate. LOL!

After lots of research I treated myself to the Rebel XSI. I got it about 2 weeks before the trip and only had the kit lens with me. I used manual modes the whole trip and shot in .CR2 files (RAW). I edited them somewhat in photoshop and in some cases bumped up the color.

Cool! Santa brought Chandler the Rebel XS. He's just a beginner and all. I'll do some playing with his to see how I like it. I'm clueless with these things still.

Never enough time to do everything is there? I guess it's just not something I've felt a desire to do. From what I know of the place, I can see why boys would like it.

You'll see soon that we did very little on our trip compared to other years. I think that's what makes me the most sore looking back. I kick myself for everything I wanted to do but didn't.

Me too!!! I'm really wanting the whole muppet series!

Oh no! A Muppet series?! Didn't need to know that! Off to eBay again.... LOL!

Agreed! I'm actually still mourning the fact that we can't pick them up on a future trip. They'd make for such great "his and hers" painting on either side of a master bedroom/bathroom.

I'm gonna hunt for them on the internet and eBay. I'm bound to turn up a set. ;)

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of the treats. I think we still have one in the refrigerator. Might be time to throw that out.

I have a horrible sweet tooth so the ones dipped in chocolate are like crack to me...especially if they're the on-a-stick variety because then I don't even have to get sticky fingers. I'm a piggy. I knoooooow!

This is the most awesome thing I've seen! I loooove Up! In fact, while at AKL we watched it every day & night on DVD since we now dislike the 'Must Dos' on the resort channel. The Poly CM's do an incredible job on their gingerbread creations. That's just amazing!

I stand corrected. This is my new vote for the Christmas card picture. LOL!

Holly, your report rocked...as always. Think I'll get busy on mine. Thanks for bringing us along for the journey!
