Carousel of Progress being replaced????

This seems like a pretty big change of direction if true. Previous discussions led me to believe that most of the posters with inside info though CoP was gone. I hope it sticks around for a long, long time. :sohappy:

This rumor has rolled around multiple times before. One saving grace is that the Kuka robot arm that was presumed to be the basis of any such coaster is now heavily licensed for amusement technology purposes to Universal.

EDIT: Welcome to WDWMagic, by the way!

Thanks!! I love Disney and it's wonderful to find people that feel the same way!

I guess I stand corrected--I seem to remember Lee or Corrus having written that CoP was on the cutting board in the near future. Since Lee says otherwise, that must not be the case.

I didn't know about the interior refurbishment work--I remember them fixing up one of the theatres (replacing the seats, etc), but that was a couple years ago. I'm glad that they're putting more work into CoP.

If they could promote the ride a little better, I think it would pull more weight attendance-wise. It's out of the way and the absence of any lines may lead some to believe it isn't an attraction, or isn't open.

I went on the CoP three times this past trip and the theatre was full twice and 3/4 full once, and there was a line waiting when we got out every time. I was very happy.

Of course it might have helped that there was a Buzz meet and greet right at the entrance and people just figured "Hey let's check this out while we're here."

Maybe someday the CoPwill have a new ending....or two new scenes (if they decide to remove the unload theater, and make people exit the load theatre on one side and enter on the other)

April 22, 2014 will be the CoP's 50th anniversary.....great time to revise a ride and get it noticed for summer crowds, especially if a new ride can be built next to it to help get people over to that side of tomorrowland.

Let's just say some imagineers are pretty fond of the 1960s scene.......:)
It couldn't hurt to leave a 60s scene and then add in a "current" scene in the final theatre...

After all, when CoP was designed for the 1964 New York World's Fair, there was even spacing between the scenes... 1900s, 1920s, 1940s, 1960s. Now, we make a 60-year jump from 1940s to the 2000s.

Logistics might be an issue, though, as far as doing load/unload within a four-minute span.

And the narrator is at least 118 years old now (that's assuming that is married at 18 in 1900.

Yeah... a new scene might start getting a tad bit ridiculous.

If they got rid of CoP, that wouldn't make any sense at all. It's a Walt Disney original. A CLASSIC. If they got rid of CoP, they would be getting rid of his legacy.

While this ride is not on my must-do list, it's still a classic that should not be going anywhere. Sadly, I'm not sure if it's profitable for Disney to keep it open. I went on it one night during President's Weekend and the park was packed, yet we were in the theater with only two other people :(. So unless Disney does some advertising or some sort of small refurb (either new AAs or a new last scene which could be publicized), I only see attendance going down over time. I'm sure 50% of park visitors don't even know the ride exists.

The rumor I've heard is that CoP is staying where it is, but the Incredibles Robo-coaster will be built over, around, and through CoP. They'll be updating the final CoP scene to include the roller coaster passing through the kitchen right when the microwave starts smoking. The coaster will than pass over the heads of the audience and corkscrew out through the roof. This "sneak peek" into CoP from the new coaster will bring a whole new audience to CoP, and Disney will be installing FastPass machines for CoP to handle the expected big crowds. The great Jean Shepherd, who provides the outstanding narration for CoP, will be resurrected from the dead to make mention of the new "flying cars" in that final scene.

It's a great, big, beautiful tomorrow, indeed.

I can sleep, too. Long live Carousel of Progress! Maybe they'll make a sequel to it. ;)

Yeah! That would be great! They could put it in Epcot! They could put between Universe of Energy and World of Motion! It would be awesome! :sohappy:

And then they could... bulldoze it. :(
