Carousel of Progress being replaced????

Additionally, if you really think, what other attractions could be removed that are less popular than this one right now in MK? I can't think of many.

Pooh's Play Place or whatever it's called, I hear there's a great vast space available right behind there ready to use. Maybe some type of submarine ride could go there...

The Tiki Room (Under New Management)

Closer to CoP - Stitch, Galaxy Theater, depending on who you ask the Laugh Floor. I'd even argue the speedway. I think that lines for that are more related to capacity then it being overly popular.

Hey,
Speaking of CoP... I have a question for you guys who know so many things: Am I imagining it, or is the "farm" scene in Living with the Land designed to "tie-in" with CoP? By this, I mean that it seems to be the same dog (I think?), and I wondered if other things about the scene were also a sort of "tie-in" or "tribute" to CoP, showing the outside of the CoP family's house...

The house is not meant to be the outside of the family's house....it's just that Disney tends to cast similar molds of already built AA animals such as Rover. In fact, Rover himself has changed. He was originally a poodle in the mock-up of Act I that appeared on the wonderful world of color "disneyland goes to the world's fair", this was also a mock-up of Father who had a much different face and brown hair! :lookaroun

When at the world's fair and at disneyland he was a small grey dog, before becoming the large brownish/blond/red/someothercolor dog he is now.

So the dog you see at the land, and even the older version of the dog at pirates of the carribean (the one holding the keys) are slightly different versions of the Rover make.

Can I add, slightly off topic, that CoP is quickly rising to Wand status on the message board circuit.
- Absolute love or hate for CoP (though more love than hate vs. the wand)
- Multiple threads on the front page (ok, only two - but sill multiple)
- Avid discussion about how it makes or breaks the theming/meaning of it's park/land
- Tied heavily to refurb/destruction conversation
- Constant references to Walt and his "vision" as if we're all his best friend

Nice to have a new piece of WDW to carry the torch.

While I have been on CoP and enjoyed it, it's one of those attractions
that I do not make a point of going to every time we go to WDW.
I think its reaching its time to permantently retire, and bring a new exciting attraction in its place. Hey how about a "Virtulal" Disney attraction, where you can "ride" past attractions, like Horizons, 20K Leagues, etc? :animwink:

Bite your tongue. Walt Disany stated that this ride was his favorite and it would only be updated and never removed. Those where his wishes.

And another bit of CoP dog trivia; in the original WDW version the dog had several names - Rover, Queenie & Sports (act III & IV) :)

Walt also wanted an ultra-futuristic utopian city built in the middle of the WDW property. We all know how that turned out. ;)

Did it have different names in the 1964 version? Can't remember off the top of my head and don't wanna crank up iTunes just to find out. :lookaroun

Carousel of Progress' current state is contrary to the name and theme of the attraction. As someone who feels it's a Top 5 attraction for me at MK, I do think one of two things need to happen:
1) End its misery. Its current state is a sad sad place to be. Is it a look at the 20th century progress? Is it supposed to continue looking forward at progress? Who knows, hard to say. Put something new and fresh in its place. As Walt said about Disneyland, it will always be changing. As much as Walt may have created and loved CoP, even he would have done away with it by now.

2) Full Refurb. Move to 5 scenes as has been mentioned. This solves for two issues - not enough rotations to tell the story and eliminates some of its ability to eat people. Today, people enter and exit at the same time through 4 doors (2 enter and 2 exit), if you limit that to one rotation, people have to enter and exit through only 2 doors which slows traffic. Likely, the rotations would have to be lengthened to accommodate additional time in the turning of people. Now, maybe each rotation is 6 minutes instead of 4, for example. Now it eats less people and creates a line. Maybe, it draws more attention to itself.

As for the Refurb. itself, a decision must be made, is it Carousel of Progress for the 20th century? If so, the scenes should be 1900, 1920, 1940, 1960 and 1980. Is it truly the Carousel of Progress, ongoing? Then I think the scenes should be 1900, 1940, 1980, 2020 (today really) and 2060. That buys you some time in the attractions lifespan as 2060 is well further away than before a necessary Refurb. You've built some longevity into the thing and eliminate the odd jump to a final scene that doesn't fit with the others.

I'd prefer option 2, but if they're not going to invest into the attraction to make it work (I'm sorry, but only changing the final scene and jumping from 1940 to present does not make for good flow and ignores some of the most inventive years of the century), then at least give it some dignity in death.
