Rumor Bye Bye (Tiki) Birdies?

What I like is in his live stream from yesterday, he says that now ***** and Disney are at war. OK, he's profiting off using the Disney brand, more than likely not having to pay any form of licensing (as well as probably getting perks from Disney!) but yet he declares war on them.

He needs to know when he won't win a single battle with them, much less a war. He'll end up lucky to find out where they get napkins supplied from, much less what's happening in the parks!

Man, I don't like being in the position defending Tom, but.....

Reporting on Disney does not mean you get perks from Disney. One of those perks would be, by the definition of some on this board, special media access, which we've already said he's not getting anymore.

Just because Disney PR doesn't like him or the site doesn't mean the company can stop him from reporting on the parks. A site's coverage probably shouldn't be dependent on special media access to get its content.

But the statement that they're at "war" and Tom's representation of himself as some defender of true Disney fandom... that's just sad and pathetic.

If he is really that upset with Disney, he should stop covering them.

OK, I did not know that. Carry on!
I’d be surprised with the Tiki Birds an odd patch of land. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bears left after 2021. They have sliced down the length. There is rarely a wait. Almost always half empty or more. I can bite on Toy Story after 2021 anniversary. Those animatronics take a while to build and Disney is bringing so much on line before the 2021 festivities. If I am gambling one is true the other is not.

While I think his site should be called out for adding CONFIRMED or BREAKiNG on articles that aren’t either, my biggest issue is how he speaks to people.

I don’t like they’re content (shame as 10 years ago I didn’t mind it) but his arrogance is what grates on me

I can't remember if this site has press access or not. Judging by the very honest reviews (aka positive and negative, real critiquing) and how they pay for everything, I'll guess no but could be wrong. I am not knocking this site at all, fyi.

I certainly do not have any sort of press access, reduced rates, swag, invitations to VIP events, etc from WDW or any Disney park. ;)

I wanted to chime in here since I run a theme park news site and think this situation brings up a good discussion about ethical practices with Disney sites. I'm not here to impugn or malign Tom or his site. I've never met him.

Reporting on rumors in this industry is always going to be messy. You're not going to get people on the record. You're not going to get official confirmation when you want it. You've got tens of thousands of people working at WDW that could claim to have inside information, and it would be hard to verify anything they tell you. But if you wanted to, you could credit them as "someone within the Walt Disney Company." It's up to the individual site to decide whether whatever sources are telling you, along with labeling something clearly as a "rumor," is responsibly publishing information.

Speaking as a guy who used to report on state politics, sports, and health care, the standards of sourcing in this line of work would not go over well with editors in my past jobs. Is that just the nature of this beast or are sites reporting irresponsibly? That's up for debate, but let's not paint all blogs and "leakers" as the same.

This is also something that concerns me. Again, I don't know Tom and I'm not going to speak ill of him. But with the advent of Disney vloggers and social media influencers, the hope on Disney's end that offering privileged media access would result in positive coverage has turned into more of an explicit expectation: if you don't speak of this in glowing terms, even when you're writing a news story, not a review or opinion piece, you won't be invited back.

You may argue that they don't have to reward criticism with access, but did you also think it was fair when Disney temporarily shut out the LA Times from critics' screenings of Disney movies retaliation for a story about the company's political influence in Anaheim?

This isn't excusing injecting opinion about Disney and its executives into what is supposed to be a news story, because that's not something I would do on my site.

Personally, I don't have much against that site when it comes to publishing inaccurate rumors, my bigger problem is them taking credit for others peoples work. I have had to call them out on two separate occasions for using my work without credit, and I am sure I am not the only victim of this.

And also when that site’s proprietor makes his ego the story more so than the headline or news.

Now that the rumors of Tiki’s and CBJ’s demise have been shot down, I would like to see the opposite. Bring back the full shows for the 50th. I understand why they were shortened. To move guests through at a quicker rate. If they can’t do that during regular hours, at the risk of giving Disney ideas, run the original shows during DAH. At least it gives paying extra money to stay longer something special to the guest.

i love the idea of extras for specially ticketed events. They should probably start including that in the design process.

@MouseBrayden did a nice summary of the controversy...

I have been enjoying his programs more and more, always fun and interesting and he did that particular one in the best way possible.
Personally for the 50th Id like to see the original show reinstated with fountains and all, like it use to be. I know thats going backwards,,, but thats just my personal wish. Not only that but the music and songs from moana are not show worthy or memorable to me and Im sure they would end up in the show in some form. I would still just rather see the tokyo stitch version if any ip has to be pushed into there.

Moana has some of the worst songs ever written for a Disney film. Lin Manuel Miranda should just stick to rap where he belongs.
