Buh-bye Poly, hello Aulani?

Beyond a massive refurb of the GCH, this is beyond unlikely to happen. The poly will remain...possibly with enhancements to the the GCH...

I will vote for the Venetian. There is plenty of space between Contemporary and the TTC.

While I am not a purist by any definition. I feel that any high rise other than the contemporary. Disney is able to mitigate asbestos, and I am sure during the major rehabs, that has been done already.

I understand the Poly is a popular resort, however, people generally aren't concerned with the structural soundness of the buildings when they vacation there.

Not sure about asbestos, but I know there is mold - I could smell it. The question is, are the problems so bad that they will have to do a tear down. The chances of people getting sick after a 7 day vacation are slim, but it's still a liability.

I also like the idea of the Hawaii clone. :)

As a DVC memeber I would love to see something constructed at the Poly. As for the tower. I cant believe they would build anything that had the remote chance of being seen looking down main street toward the train station. If they need more rooms then build the Ventian resort that was originally planned in 1971.

The tower(s) would have to be on the scale of the ones in Hawaii to even possibly be seen from MSUSA and they would never do that anyway. Any new towers, I would imagine, would be on the scale of Bay Lake Tower or the Contemporary in height (the reason the CR buildings can be glimpsed from spots in the MK is that it is so much closer...the poly is too far away for this to happen) Again, the new towers could be styled in a similar way to the Aulani towers with individual buildings at different levels to maximize sight lines. Artist concepts of such a thing would make people's jaws drop  I'd bet.

And the south Pacific tropical theme is so easy to maintain since Florida is also hot and humid. Seems like a no brainer to me.

I always had the feeling the Poly was mostly frame construction as was the Disney Inn when it opened. You could tell just walking through the place. Considering how long many of the buildings have been there, their never ceasing use and the type construction, it is likely they are reaching the end of their lifespan. If mold and asbestos are present then they would have litttle choice but to replace them. And they don't build resorts the same way anymore. Now they are mostly conrete block or poured concrete. In other words, built to last.

I know the poly refurb is already being discussed on these boards, but word around the campfire is, the favorite deluxe resort of many could be making an exit for an Aulani clone.

Would they?
Could they?
Should they?

Let's discuss.

What do you mean by an Aulani clone? Like disney building a complete clone of the resort? Aulani cost almost a billion dollars to build, disney could build more at a lower construction price. Also, the towers at aluani are just as tall as blt. Those towers are 5x tallier than the current resort, they are going to stick out like a golf ball in a shot glass.

In defense of the idea, they could esily shave off a few floors to have it fit the location better. And they would save buckets of money by having all the drawings and design done. The towers themselves are fairly cookie cutter with individual design elements. So adapting it to the poly location seems rather easy.

It would be stupid to do such a thing. Not to mention it would cannibalize the business for the "original" Aulani. Why fly all the way to Hawaii when you can fly to Florida for the same and/or better experience?

I'm going to take a stab in the dark here and assume you've never actually been to Hawaii? :animwink:

Despite what you could "just tell," Poly construction is identical to the original wings of the Contemporary--steel frames with slide-in modular-constructed rooms. Both were pet projects of U.S. Steel.

The only thing I can see hapening even remotely like this would be a massive refurb of the GCH including some of the new ideas used at the Aulani resort (Interactive elements and such).

I'm guessing you folks are not referring to the Grand Californian Hotel here. Little help?

Never mind the tower, what about those GIANT BIRDS!?! Those would have really ruined things...

Haha

I find it hard to believe Disney would spend that kind of money on an original resport in Hawaii and then build a clone of it in Orlando, modified or not. Anyway you slice it the whole idea doesn't make sense. They want people to fork out money for a vacation to Hawaii, which isn't cheap, and stay at a new, beautiful, original resort. The main attraction. I don't think they would mess with that by making a clone, especially this soon... And considering how popular Poly is... And planting the new resort's clone at WDW... Which really doesn't have a problem at bringing in guests... I don't know I buy that.

If original rides are given 6 year exclusivity rights before they can be cloned at another park... You know, so to get people interested and motivated to visit that park for that specific ride, I don't think they'd shoot themselves in the foot by building a clone resort in their targeted audiences backyard.
