Buh-bye Poly, hello Aulani?

I must be missing something. The topic has been overwhelmingly whether the Polynesian should be rethemed and a clone of the DVC in Hawaii. Not necessarily a debate about whether DVC additions would be welcome there..

Well if disney rebuilt poly as a clone of aulani, dvc would come up.

So there at Disneyland they are proving it's entirely possible to radically rebuild and retheme an existing and aged hotel property while keeping it in business. If anything, I would think a similar project at the Poly would be much easier because the rooms are broken up into blocks in a half dozen separate buildings. It would be easier to cordon off a building or two at a time and just go at it, while the rest of the resort operates as normal. Such a project timeline for the Poly would probably be like the Disneyland Hotel, where work began in 2009 and won't end completely until Spring 2012.

I never said that it was not possible to radically rebuild the existing buildings; all I said that if the building is 50+ years old it would be more cost effective to take the buildings down and than rebuild. Major renovation must meet new building codes and to do this in older building is big bucks.

The Disneyland Hotel also sits within the Anaheim Resort District, which I believe has a maximum height for buildings that is exceeded by the current towers of the Disneyland Hotel. If that is the case, then replacing the number of rooms might mean building out instead of up, using up more of the Disneyland Resort's limited land. Avoiding a fight with the city might well be worth the cost, but that is a problem not likely to occur at Walt Disney World.

They can just build another parking structure, they now have that empty lot east of the Anaheim convention center.

They should have ripped down the dl hotel towers and built something better looking, like a swan or dolphin clone.

Cannibalize business? That's insane. I would hazard a guess that few, if any, guests who would be planning a trip to Hawaii would cancel it upon hearing there was a similar resort in Florida. There is more to do in Hawaii than just hotels.

As for the rumor, it'll never happen. The Polynesian is incredibly popular, so there's no point to make such a substantial investment. This rumor would make a lot more sense if it stated that the plan was to replace Saratoga Springs (a relatively unpopular resort) with Aulani, but even that won't happen.

Agreed.

This might be the only time I've ever seen the words "better looking" used in conjunction with the Swan and Dolphin...

There are plans to build a parking structure on the current Pumbaa Parking Lot, but it has been held back in part because City Officials want to connect the Disneyland Resort to their new transit hub, ARTIC. The lot east of the Anaheim Convention Center is the current Toy Story Parking Lot, formerly the Strawberry Fields, and is slated to one day become the third gate.

Swan and Dolphin clone? :hurl:

I know, but there is no one that can defend the look of the DL Hotel against the Swan or Dolphin. I hate having to somehow defend those eyesores but the DL Hotel has not aged well in anyway.

Really, but that place is like two highways over, but what ever. As for a third gate at strawberry fields, are they going to buy out the apartments/residential units on that block because there is only to be some tense planning board meetings.

Isn't any worse than the dl hotel. Disney seems to agree, DL hotel is the only hotel that disney doesn't showcase the exteriors. The only picture you have of the exteriors is of the two bottom floors in a pool shoot, and even then they angled it differently than pictures at the other hotels.
