Buh-bye Innoventions "Road to Tomorrow"!

Is this just a cosmetic change, or will all of the exhibits be changing as well? Some of the stuff in Innoventions could use a complete overhaul. I, for one, am just happy that some cash is being funneled back into the parks. Nice to see some real work going on!

The towers are coming down to make room for more DVC kiosks and signs about "Disney's best kept secret".

I was also told they had to be removed to accommodate the return of the double decker buses to WS.

Being serious though - I must wonder why they are spending the money for his unless smething else is coming, it just doesn't make much sense to spend on this when o many other areas of the park could use the funds.

bring back the people counter from communicore and all the glorious things from it and on a side note I saw somewhere that DisneyLand is thinking about doing a new exibit in their inoventions based on Wall-e the new pixar movie so maybe this has something to do with that. I know Pixarventions on one side and rides of yesterday on the other side.

It is true about how climbable those signs were. I don't think it was considered a day at Epcot if I didn't see one kid/teen/adult try to scale those towers.

The signs came down simply because they want to make the doors to Innoventions more noticable. They were behind tall towers and are tinted. They are going to be replaced with some signs that hang on the wall of the building above the door. Honestly, I haven't been to happy with the changes (I used to be CM and worked at Innoventions). It seems like they've gotten rid of so much but haven't had anything as creative to replace it. I was there in '05, and they were talking about the changes then, so they must have put some thought into the changes.

As a child I fondly remember CommuniCore. I have memories of a show where you could see through a large window lot's of computers that supposedly helped operate Epcot with people working around them. At the same time a projection of a little animated character bounced around the room while explaining what went on. I'm talking a long time ago here folk's so I may be slightly off, perhaps Marni or somebody could verify?

What you are remembering is Backstage Magic at EPCOT Computer Central in CommuniCore East. That room, the large windows, the TV screens, and the model of EPCOT Center are all still there, behind the back wall of the Fantastic Plastics Works. I used to work at Innoventions, and I'd stand there every day pining for CommuniCore. I didn't start out that way, I was originally very excited about Innoventions, but over time, I slowly began to realize, “Wow, CommuniCore was way better than this.”

The show was Backstage Magic I believe, in Communicore (North) East.... the character was I/O - a computer blip not unlike `Bit` in TRON. He `transported` Julie from the overhead screens into the peppers ghost effect overlaid on the real Computer Central.

Thanks guys, I'm glad I wasn't imagining things! Back then it just seemed so 'alive' and 'wow' but maybe that's because I was just a kid

Things then seemed like the future brought to the average person, rather than look at these video games that you could play at home but you can fight to play here instead. I know, I know, there's more to it than that but a lot of thought should be put into what potentially is a place of true wonder.

Communicore 2.0

I was also a big fan of Communicore. I only visited it once as a child, but I can vividly remember the Founatin of Information, SMRT-1, and some sort of trivia game that had the first touch screens I had ever seen. It is one of the reasons that I embraced computer science instead of fearing it. I'm all for a Communicore 2.0  I wonder what a Fountain of Information might look like now? Maybe covered in LCD's, DVD's and cell phones?

I'm fine with the fact that there are people who liked the Innoventions signs, but with all due respect I felt they were an eyesore. To me they looked like top-heavy radio transmission towers from Mars and I don't think that type of industrial aesthetic is all that welcoming. I never got to visit Communicore, but from the pictures I have seen, it seems like it was a lot friendlier with beautiful views into the park and exhibits that didn't assault the senses. Innoventions became such a dark, confusing place. Is that really what we want our future to be like? Was the "Road to Tomorrow" supposed to be that convoluted?....or lined with the mundane signs one sees along the 405??

My hope is that the welcoming character of Communicore is restored to the place, while moving forward with a bright new design. Take the covers off the windows so that we can enjoy the views of the park. Design exhibits that are engaging and don't need to be secluded in darkness to be enjoyed. Restore to the buildings the corridors that actually made them useful to get around the park. I like the Apple showroom concept mentioned earlier here, but I'm sure that Disney can bring a lot more life and color to it. (Please, no more pastels or auto paint on everything. The metallic blue paint of Disneyland's Tomorrowland is not the way to go.)

Nothing will be changing inside of Innoventions (unless a sponsor runs up, and elects not to continue its venue). Each of the venues at Innoventions has a sponsor paying money for their exhibit, so it would take quite some time to phase out the sponors' venues.

This isn't a sign that Innoventions is going away, just that Disney is going for a different look for their entrance (side note: I saw the artist sketches of the incoming signs, and I like it more than the tower signs that were previously there).

So you mean the Backstage magic stuff is still there?

I'd wondered for a long time what became of that space. It's nice to know it still exists. A little piece of the old Epcot that's still around, even if we can't see it.

Yeah, its still back there. Its a little...cluttered, but its there. Most of the systems are still back there too. If I remember correctly, even some of the lighting for the show is still there. However, when engineers (around the world) started to realize that a central hub for all systems wasn't necessarily the best move (it goes down, everything goes down), the concept lost its meaning.
