Great Pics!

Now, y'all pull out your crystal balls and make a prediction or two for me. The DW and I are planning on visiting DLR near the end of February 2012. What should we expect as far as the new entryway completion by then? Trolley up and running? Carthay Circle open for business?
Please post your best guesses!

You won't see any completion on Buena Vista Street by February. It will all be behind construction walls. If you stand on your tiptoes by the walls you might be able to see some nearly finished exteriors on some buildings, probably the Carthay Circle Theater.

But it will all still be behind walls in February, and nothing will be open by then. Judging by the way Paradise Garden didn't make its June deadline this summer, I will be surprised if they get Buena Vista Street open and operating by July 4th, 2012.

nemofinder22, as always, thank you for keeping us all updated with the hits and highlights from the various DCA construction photo blogs out there. What a service to humanity you provide (or at least the part of humanity that are Disneyland fans!)

:D thanks not a problem at all! I also do it for myself so I can look back at its progress and to get some before and after looks the Paradise Gardens thread comes to mind first lol/

More walls have popped up around Sunshine Plaza with walls now blocking the former Stroller shop, Engine-Ears Toys, Baker's Field Bakery and Bur-r-r Bank Ice Cream.

Speaking of the engine good news for it, DLR donated it to Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola.
http://frrs.wordpress.com/2011/08/05/something-is-coming/
The Western Pacific Railroad Museum is receiving a unique gift. Major portions of the Zephyr train and related artifacts previously located at the Disney California Adventure park have been generously donated by the Disneyland Resort. The park is undergoing a large expansion and the changes underway allowed for the donation of this famous exhibit representing the iconic California Zephyr train.

The cab of the locomotive from the exhibit is currently in transit and will be unloaded at the museum on Saturday. A further announcement will be coming in a few days.”

From the Disney Parks Blog-

I’m excited to share with you a very special donation that we recently made to Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola, California.
As part of the expansion of Disney California Adventure park, the main entrance is changing and the cab of the California Zephyr train that most recently served as the location for Bur-r-Bank Ice Cream and Baker’s Field Bakery has been donated to the museum

I will definitely miss the Zephyr in DCA, but since it has no future with Disney, I am so happy to see it donated to the museum up north. Not just happy, I am actually excited to see it going to a good a deserving home.

Farewell you solid piece of engineering. You've been a great "smiling" face in DCA for the last decade, and hopefully will continue to smile at the end of the tracks at your new home. (I've always thought it looked like it was smiling at me as I walked into the central plaza from Condor Flats...but I'm a nerdy engineer who also pats my aircraft on the side each time I disembark and say "good job")

The Western Pacific streamliner was a neat and very clever detail of DCA's complete Sunshine Plaza Circa 2001-2010. I actually think I'll miss it more than the California letters, but that's just me as a lover of planes-trains-and-automobiles.

This is OT, and not sure if you ever travelled on the West Coast in the 1970's and 80's Admiral01, but you would have loved the dearly departed Pacific Southwest Airlines AKA PSA. PSA not only sponsored the original Skycabin at Sea World San Diego, but for much of the 1980's they were the official airline of Disneyland and sponsored CircleVision after the Bell System left. And their 1970's and 80's slogans and commercial jingles always revolved around the word "Smile!" because starting in the late 1960's they painted smiles on the noses of all of their planes.

Here's one of their big L-1011 Tristar jet in the 70's that they dubbed "Mother Grinning Bird".

I unfortunately never got the chance to fly PSA before they were absorbed, but I have always loved the smile from their aircraft. But, I've seen the US Airways "heritage" PSA paintjob A319 zipping around Washington National Airport over the last few years, smile and all. I would have rather climed aboard that beautiful L-1011 and headed west, though.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who is a lover of planes-and-trains. I did definitely connect more to the Zephyr than to the CALIFORNIA lettering out in front of the park. It was an excellent detail, and made that part of the park really feel special.

I look forward to DCA in the future, though, because I think the park is becomming something special, even if we are losing the Zephry piece-of-history.

I admit it, I'm a nerd.

I couldn't agree more.

Here's a shot of the current entrance to DCA. This is a particularly ugly phase in the extreme makeover of the entrance complex. They will only let us enter the park like this for a couple more weeks, and then the whole thing gets shut down and walled off once the alternate alley behind Soarin' opens.

But honestly, this has to be the ugliest entrance to a Disney theme park ever. It just shows how truly unprecedented this entire DCA project is, and how they have had to go to costly and radical lengths to remake DCA into a new image.

Welcome to Disney California Adventure! Sorry For The Mess.

Nothing has changed yet...you're still entering and exiting through the same place. They're still working on the backstage route behind Soarin. I walked through it yesterday and it's quite nice. I love the new background music.

A new statue of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse will be featured on Buena Vista Street when it opens in 2012. Walt Disney Imagineering unveiled a maquette similar to the one pictured above, showing what the statue will look like. In this Q&A with the Disney Parks Blog, Ray Spencer, creative director for Buena Vista Street, explains the story behind the remarkable statue

Awesome! I can't wait to watch those Imagineering videos later tonight nemofinder22!

Here's a picture of the Buena Vista Street model that I took earlier this afternoon during my visit to D23 Expo! It just looks soooooo cool! What a great complement to Main Street USA across the Esplanade.

Thanks Nemofinder!

I really like that partners statue. I think it captures the spirit of BVS and the new DCA perfectly.

I love it too! Walt looks great and Mickey is the retro Mickey I love!!! Plus he's a much smaller (and cuter) Mickey than the one in the original Partners statue...I've always thought that he's too big in that one.

I just wish Oswald could have figured in somewhere, given the time period BVS and the statue are supposed to represent...ah well...

I just finished watching those Buena Vista Street videos. You aren't kidding; there's a TON of information packed in there! I am now super-excited about Buena Vista Street! I've always felt this was going to be a giant leap forward for DCA, but now I'm convinced this will really do as much to change the DCA reputation as Cars Land does.

And that's on top of the big reputation changes already with World of Color, Midway Mania, Little Mermaid, New Paradise Pier, etc.

It's a massively huge improvement, made even more amazing by the fact it's happening in an existing 10 year old Disney theme park. Breathtakingly unprecedented.

I went to the Buena Vista presentation and found it all to be SO interesting. It made me really excited for these changes. Not that I wasn't before, but I love the attention to detail they're putting into this thing. The reasons for why things are placed where they are, the colors, etc...so cool. And I love everything about the DCA version of the partners statue.

Finally got the chance to watch all 3 videos. I'm so impressed with the attention to detail and loved hearing them discuss all the thought processes that went into the design. BVS is going to be very, very special!

Is it next summer yet?! :D
