Pre-Trip Buddy and Philmonster return to the World!

Hi everyone. So it’s real this time. I negotiated a trip back to WDW with my WDW hating partner, the Philmonster!

This will take place in and around February 12 of 2020, when I turn about 2020 years old. Riviera is the likely resort if available.

Why did he agree? Well, because I’m taking him to Niagara Falls for Labor Day weekend.

Assuming that he doesn’t hurl me into Horseshoe Falls, I should be free to plan a February WDW trip upon return.

The question is- do you guys want a Niagara Falls trip report or no?

Lemme know, and thanks! 😜😜😜

They make you wear these things!

Well, at least the ponchos worked. Oh wait . . . :cautious: :p

And here is the eerily empty international food court.

Empty for a reason . . . ;)

A glass of wine, and the Carrie White blood shirt apparently crawled its way out of my closet and attached itself to me again for the first time since California Grill!

I recall the "Carrie" shirt from a previous TR. I'm amazed you still have it! :joyfull:

I took a hundred dollar bill and decided to feed it to this fine lady:

Ten cents -- at least you won something. P.S.: Just a tidbit about those machines -- the ones that use familiar TV show characters (images) to catch your attention, are the machines that pay out the lowest. Reason is that the company pays royalties (some very high -- such as in the case of the blockbuster shows like Game of Thrones, for example) for the privilege of using the images.

Instead, go for the more mundane machines like the ones with the fruit spinners -- you have a slightly better chance of some sort of payout from those. :)

Yup! It's still as horrifying as ever, and that's the last you'll be seeing of that thing.

But notice our great view of Canada. That's the side we were supposed to be staying on before we found out that Phil probably couldn't get across the border due to a little something on his record from his early 20's. But don't worry - we're sneaking into Canada tomorrow. Seriously. ;)

Now onto the Seneca Niagara Resort and Casino, which is connected to our hotel by a tunnel!

Not my picture, but here it is:

View attachment 406690

You can tell which ones are not my pictures because those are the ones that don't suck. :)

Hey, I bet you didn't know I could fly!

View attachment 406692

Time to win allllll the money!!!!!!! And guess what....we found out there is a Fat Tuesdays in this place!!!!!!

View attachment 406694

And it was closed!!!!!!!!!!! We were told it would be open until 10, but we got there at 8-ish and it was totally closed, with those spinning alcoholic frozen delights just taunting us.

We went and asked about it at one of the 16,000 other bars and the bartender said "Oh that. Well that's the only place here not owned by the casino. They just rent space, and they kind of just show up whenever they want. The only night you can guarantee they will be open is Friday and Saturday."

Well!!!

Anyway, if you play games, you get free beer, wine, or well drinks, if you are lucky enough for one of the waitresses to come by, which actually happens pretty rarely, but we got our hands on a few, as you might imagine.

I took a hundred dollar bill and decided to feed it to this fine lady:

View attachment 406695

It seemed like a good investment. After all, she was basically telling me she was going to give me $23,034.00 in return.

Twenty minutes later.........

View attachment 406696

ehm...........uuuuuhhhhh........ummmm............

Time to go!!

And that's it for now. Please be sure to tune into the next chapter of this harrowing saga when we attempt to sneak into Canada, have an audience with some gorillas and elephants at the Rainforest Cafe, and watch the Falls turn every color of the rainbow at night, along with fireworks! :)
That lady took too much of my money as well when I met her in Vegas!

CHAPTER FOUR - OHHHHHHHHHH CANADA, WE'RE SNEAKIN' IN!

Sorry for the delay. I spent the weekend watching IT: CHAPTER 2, which runs approximately 48 hours long, so you can see why I was unable to post. ;)

Returning to this now, and the next day, Wednesday August 28, had been designated Sneak Into Canada Day. Originally, we were supposed to stay in Canada, we were supposed to go to the Shaw Festival, we were supposed to go to Canada's wine country, we were supposed to go to Canada's Wonderland. But noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. After a little research showed that a big monster could be denied entry, we cancelled all that. Yeah, I know, I've mentioned this before, but not sure who is late to this party.

Plus, I started seeing scary videos on YouTube with people getting turned away, and that was the last straw.

So, NY side it was.

BUT..........could we get a Philmonster across the border if we walked him across the bridge? We intended to give it a shot.

But first - breakfast in our concierge level club room. Hurray!

Below is a picture of the room from the hotel website.

club-lounge.jpg

Looks pretty and peaceful, right? Rigggghhhht.

Now, all you have to do is imagine this room, filled to the rim with 15,000 people, half of whom are screaming, sugar-shocked children, behaving like starving locusts, swarming a single lonely tray of cold, runny, scrambled eggs, a plate of stale pastries, and a cereal station that contained generic versions of Fruit Loops and Frosted Flakes, with an empty pitcher of milk beside it. Plus, the family who had taken over the couch/tv area had the tv tuned to Fox News.

We left.

What the holy hell?!?!?!?! Is this what concierge level is like???? So far, not exactly what we had imagined. But anyway, after a quick bite at the Starbucks downstairs, it was time to try to get Phil over the border. Does he look nervous to you?

IMG_0466.JPG

So, we started walking over the Rainbow Bridge. Before you start walking over the bridge, you have to go through this thing:

IMG_0467.JPG

I was like "Boy! This is easy! You just go through a revolving gate, and you're in Canada!"

WRONNNNNG!

First, you have to walk over this really long but scenic bridge. Look! More water!

IMG_0470.JPG

IMG_0469.JPG

And then, you arrive at this:

IMG_0472.JPG

Well, suddenly, I felt like I was back at Disney, because I was in a line longer than Space Mountain!

It may not look like it, but this line was not only long, but apparently, the Canada ride is a real slow loader, because we stood in this thing for two hours. I am not even kidding.

They only had one (1) single person checking people into Canada that day, and whomever was doing it that day was taking their job pretty, pretty seriously.

I don't know if any of you have noticed but I am apparently a relative of Snow White, and being so, ummm, white, and having not even thought about wearing sun-block in upstate NY in late August when the temps were supposed to be low 70's, well, let's just say that my skin was getting slow-roasted by the Canadian sun as we inched closer and closer.

Luckily, Phil is the size of a small mountain, so I was able to hide in his shadow a lot of the time, but I still ended up a little burned. Not as bad as tomorrow at Darian Lake, but bad enough. Funny, I've been to WDW a million times and have never gotten a sunburn. I come to Niagara Falls once, and I end up lobstered.

Anyway, 150 years later, we finally got up to the processing person, and he was actually a little mean:

AGENT: "What is your purpose for coming to Canada?"

PHILMONSTER: "To spend money."

AGENT: "Spend money on what?"

PHILMONSTER: "We're tourists - just tourist things."

AGENT: "Like what?"

PHILMONSTER: "You know, Clifton Hill, maybe the Skywheel - "

AGENT: "How long will you be here?"

PHILMONSTER: "Couple of hours."

AGENT: Why are you walking across instead of driving across?"

What the----??!?!?!?!

I was freaking out and thought they were going to release the hounds, but after Phil told him it was because it was a nice day, and our hotel was just across the bridge, the border agent took a long pause and then said:

"Welcome to Canada."

We were in! Sunburned, but in!

CHAPTER FOUR - continued

So.......what do a couple of drunken reprobates do as soon as they get to Canada? Well, after roasting in the sizzling Canadian sun for two hours, apparently, they do this!

IMG_0476.JPG

Yep, that's right. We practically tripped into the Niagara Brewing Company, which is right at the foot of the very, very tourist trap area of Clifton hill.

Clifton-Hill-Niagara-Falls-1.jpg

IMG_0474.JPG

clifton hill 1.jpg

This was pretty fun! Almost worth the sunburn! Fast food restaurants! Haunted houses! Go carts! Giant ferris wheels! It was practically a theme park!

Speaking of giant ferris wheels, let's go on one!

IMG_0487.JPG

IMG_0480.JPG

Look! More water!

And then we went on this thing, which was a self-described "6-D" attraction and was really better than it had any right to be:

IMG_0488.JPG

We also did a wine tasting - no pics, sorry. And tried to walk to Journey Behind the Falls (until we realized it was unwalkable) - no pics, sorry.

At that point, Grandfather Time and Grandma Moses got exhausted, and after doing nothing but tourist trap things in Canada, they decided to return to America. Halfway across the Rainbow Bridge, it dawned on them that they might have another two hour wait to cross the border again.

And they did.....sort of......only about 90 minutes this time.

Something tells me Disney was looking better and better to the Philmonster. ;)

CHAPTER FOUR - CONTINUED AGAN - HEY HOW LONG IS THIS FREAKING CHAPTER 4 GOING ON FOR ALREADY?!?

Well, once back in the land of the free and the home of the brave and the land of concierge club rooms that are so crowded that you may get trampled if you dare to go in, we decided to forego the club room and head to Rainforest Cafe!

This actually took a little convincing with Philmonster, because this is a little too close to Disney for him, for comfort. But he finally agreed, although he looks a little freaked out in the below shot, if you ask me.

IMG_0496.JPG

I asked him to take a picture of me, and this is what he came up with.

IMG_0509.JPG

Thanks a lot, Phil! That's very flattering!

I had some sort of veggie burger and Phil probably had this:

SCR-FlintstoneSteak.png

I guess he liked whatever it was, because after dinner, he agreed to go on a Rainforest Cafe photo shoot. ;) No animals or Philmonsters were harmed in the taking of these awful pictures:

IMG_0514.JPG

IMG_0519.JPG

What is with my arm??? Am I saying - "Behold! An empty wall!" Also, another questionable shirt.

Well, since I only have 5 more pics allowed in this section, let's not waste time. Tonight was fireworks night at the falls, so prepare yourself for MORE WATER!!! This time in rainbow colors! Let's go there now!...............Wait......this sign is confusing me............

IMG_0520.JPG

But we finally got there, and this is what we saw!

IMG_0522.JPG

The Falls are gay? Kidding, They are for everyone, obviously.

IMG_0523.JPG

And then, Wishes, I mean Fireworks began!

IMG_0527.JPG
IMG_0539.JPG

Wow. Oh, Canada, you're pretty awesome. NY side too.

And I guess this three-part chapter has finally drawn to a close, and next, a Philmonster will be driving us to Six Flags Darian Lake, and there might just be some unexpected wins at the casino. See you tomorrow. :)

Right about this time, I was at WDW, without a thought in my mind about Niagara Falls or questionable shirts. Or...

You did catch that, right?

Love it. Have you and Brian ever been to the Falls? It's actually a pretty fun and reasonably priced trip, I haven't gotten to this part of our trip yet, but there are water rides, theme parks, wineries, and more. Plus water. Everywhere you look, water. Water. Water.....glug, glug.......

Not sure why, but I had just assumed that the Canadian side of the falls would be a smidge more elegant. ;) That photo above . . . is like International Drive on steroids?! :jawdrop: :hilarious:

P.S.: The "conversation" between Phil and the gentleman at the Canadian border was funny. :D

I've been by myself many years ago - but it was to go to the Niagara Falls mall, where they had a big CD outlet LOL. I'd load up on inventory to resell. This was at least 15 years ago.

But if you can guarantee me a balcony view of Corey Hart, we're going!

When M and I went to the Falls in 2017 we only waited five minutes or so to get through both border crossings! Granted, it was April and cool and foggy and cloudy and not really tourist season, but still.

Also, thanks for the warning NOT to stay "concierge" at that Sheraton! Yikes!

Anyway, 150 years later, we finally got up to the processing person, and he was actually a little mean:

I believe border guards will often ask questions that are unusual or unexpected to keep people on their toes, and to allow them to look for nervous or other suspicious reactions.

If they only asked simple or standard questions, it would be easy for anyone to give scripted answers.

CHAPTER FIVE - TIME FOR SOME THEME PARKIN'!

Now, you wouldn't know it since he is such a Disney hater, but Philmonster is sort of a roller coaster nut. Whatever town we are in, he scopes out the nearest amusement park and decides we have to go to it. In this case, he found a brochure for Six Flags Darien Lake that said "Minutes from Niagara Falls!!!"

Okay. This is where I have an issue. Everything says "minutes from Niagara Falls". The brochure for the Niagara Wine Trail also says "minutes from Niagara Falls!"

I guess these are correct statements, although the Six Flags brochure could have said "45 minutes from Niagara Falls", and the Wine Trail could have said "30 minutes from Niagara Falls", THose statements would have been a bit more accurate.

Annnnyway, so Thursday, August 30....we tried to snag a free breakfast in the concierge club lounge once again. Once again, 15,000 hysterical locust people who have never seen food before were savagely attacking coffee and french toast and cereal again.

We left. Starbucks it is!

45 minutes later:

IMG_0541.JPG

Note that it is practically deserted. Why can't the entrance to Disney look like this some days?

It's a pretty small park. Here's a map:

Six-Flags-Darien-Lake-Map-2003-600x420.jpg

This might be a little outdated because I don't remember there being a Batman coaster. Maybe they lost the licensing rights and renamed it or something.

Anyway, when we were buying our tickets, the woman selling them told us that it would be five dollars cheaper to buy a year long season pass than a one day park pass, and that as one of the benefits, we would have front of line privilege for the day. Well! Ya don't have to ask me twice. Sold! And in we went.

The first thing Phil wanted to go on was whatever this thing is:

IMG_0543.JPG

It basically just flips you around and around and tries to make you throw up. I draw the line at rides that are specifically designed to make you sick, so I told Phil he could go on this by himself. And he did!

IMG_0542.JPG

Good! Now that he's installed on a ride, it's time for me to sneak off and go find a beer!

And I did! They have beer carts all over that place, and they have spinny rides that make you sick all over that place too. Looks like I was going to be having quite a brew-fest, which was fine by me. But let's check back in with Phil. Sometimes he doesn't fit on certain rides, and this one looked a little small. Did he get in?

He did!!!

IMG_0545.JPG

IMG_0546.JPG

Yikes. No thank you.

What's next? Seems like a good time to take a ride on a fish!

IMG_0578.JPG

Yup, I'm getting double burned in the upstate NY sunshine. Hurray!

And oh, look who found a beer now!

IMG_0547.JPG

If you can't see it, his tee-shirt says Camp Crystal Lake Counselor on it. And if you get the reference, I should only have been so lucky for him to have been a counselor at that camp. ;)

What's next?

Oh, look, another spinny ride. Actually, this one doesn't look so bad.

IMG_0549.JPG

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In that case.....more beer it is!!

Back in a few minutes.

CHAPTER FIVE - CONTINUED

We went on all the roller coasters, but there were signs on all of them that said if you were caught taking pictures on any coaster, you would be ejected from the park. Well! I guess you'll just have to look at this nut instead.

IMG_0553.JPG

And then onto another spinny thing. Phil is up there somewhere. Maybe they'll spin him to the moon.

IMG_0580.JPG

Time for another ferris wheel. Hey, this picture looks familiar. :)
IMG_0563.JPG

View from the top.
IMG_0559.JPG

Then Phil decided he had to ride this thing.
IMG_0581.JPG

Again, I thought he might be a little too big for it, but wait for it, wait for it, wait for it......

Philmonster on the loose!!!!!!!

IMG_0584.JPG

IMG_0582.JPG

I thought he was going to crack his head open, but somehow, he survived, and so did the moose! :)

That's the last pic I have of Darien Lake for some reason. We were done with the whole thing by like 5PM. It's a cute little park, but I wouldn't really rush back there for any reason, even though we now have a year-long pass. :)

That night, we had dinner at The Anchor Bar, which claims to have invented Buffalo chicken wings! Not much to look at:

Anchor Bar.jpg

But a fun menu!

Niagara_Falls_Dinner_Menu_10_16_17.png

The wings were good, but maybe we were expecting too much because they didn't really blow us away.

After that it was back to the casino where another one-armed bandit gobbled up another hundred bucks from me in almost no time flat. Grrrrr.

Phil, on the other hand, would like you to know he won fifty-six dollars and change!

IMG_0540.JPG

And that's about it for our theme park day. Tomorrow, we're off to the Niagara Wine Trail to see how much trouble we can get into. Back to you then!
