D+ is a nice service…but it’s viability is now tied to original content…not catalogue.

very few people unaware of Bambi and the empire strikes back at this point.

Netflix had a huge catalogue…it became dependent on original content, however, to turn the corner

mostly agree on the rest.
Disagree, I think you're counting re-watchability and nostalgia short when it comes to Disney's back catalog. Add into that the 21st Century back catalog and you got thousands of titles still to come to D+. That is literally Millions of watch hours still untapped across all their current subs, and that is before you even add new original content.

As MisterPenguin pointed out there is a reason Moana has been in the top ten of streaming movies almost all pandemic. And it ain't because its brand new original content.

Sure you bring in new sub with new original content, but you keep them and your existing subs with a combination of your old existing catalog and new original content. Its not an "either/or", but an "and".

I think Moana has just filled “that spot”…

disney always has that thing going…Moana is the latest in line…it was frozen…it was beauty and the beast…it was little mermaid…it’s their lane. Don’t think you can extrapolate that to lifetime subscriptions to D+

let it play…those that say D+ is the entire reason people buy Disney stock for the last 2 years better diversify their portfolio

but to Disney’s credit: they seem to have LMM locked in a cage and he only writes songs for them now 🤪

Disagree. Disney's catalogue is second to none in re-watches, especially with the under-10 set. I remember back in the 90s, when parents would complain about the "Disney Vault" concept since so many of their DVD's would just get worn out with re-watches.

Plus there is a whole catalogue of Fox movies going back to 1935 that are still waiting to be tapped.
The question is: how long will that last?

I have doubts that D+ subscriptions are permanent. But let’s see how it plays

I haven't heard about the Sony licensing deal, I will have to read up about that and hopefully it will add more variety to D+.

I really hope they add Walt Disney's Disneyland and Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color to D+ and more of the older stuff in general.

So it looks like that Netflix deal expires this year and their library will move to D+ this year? This is pretty great news, mainly for my Spider-Man movies I love but there are some Sony movies I haven't watched yet that I will check out.

Honestly it makes me happy seeing Disney and Sony work so well together, hopefully a good sign for upcoming Spider-Man movies (MCU and Spider-Verse) to continue to be made as I know they're already working on the next MCU Spider-Man as long as Tom Holland wants to continue playing the role. I think with this trilogy they realized it's incredibly beneficial to work together so they can both profit off the IP.

The Netflix deal just started Jan 1st of this year.

So with Sony movies, they will go first to Netflix after they leave theaters. And then after a period of time (usually like 12-18 months) they will leave Netflix and then go to Disney+. Its called Pay-One Window (Netflix) and Pay-Two Window (Disney+).

Point is that you aren't giving the back catalog of either Disney or 21st Century enough credit. Its has enough content to feed D+ for Millions of watch hours, enough to maintain its current sub base.

The new original content is what is going to bring in new subs. And based on the list of whats coming its a pretty good slate.

They’re new at this…they’ve never had a streaming library before. Can we agree on that?

its hard to know exactly how advantageous that will be? Do people continue to buy Netflix to watch Star Trek: the next generation after 16 years?? Maybe

I just caution that you maybe looking at “Disney library demand” from the vhs/dvd perspective…where they controlled the flow of those properties and faced far less competition and less ease of access.

d+ is now 2 years old? The next year is big…if the demand is the same for “classics”…then you’re right…if subscriptions continue to draw back or even reduce…then I may be.

the demand for new content will be the driver…much to Bob’s chagrin…is my guess.

they could have made better Star Wars…that woulda helped 👍🏻😉

Except how is D+ any different than the Disney Vault? Its still limited to only D+, and only available for a sub fee. Its not like you can get that back catalog anywhere else but D+, they've made sure of that.

The demand is still there even if you don't want to acknowledge it. And Disney is still a lifestyle brand, and will continue to be so, again they've made sure of that. You get the younger generation hooked and you've got consumers for life. That is why the Moana example is so important. As those kids watching Moana on a loop keeping it in the top 10 of streaming movies are hooked on the Disney brand. Encanto I bet is going to be another one that keeps those kids hooked.

So while I agree new sub growth is going to be due to new content, but don't count out existing subs being maintained by the back catalog.

We’re going in circles…”because it’s Disney”

that isn’t guaranteed to be etched in stone forever. One example: this idiot in charge is abandoning large chunks of his potential parks market with prices.
“That doesn’t matter? It’s “luxury” now?”
We shall see…Disney wasn’t built by whales.

never a good idea in business to “decline” to expand your market.

I think we’ll watch how the streaming business develops. It’s been a very impressive effort so far…but we don’t have the whole picture. As often pointed out in the D+ threads…a lot of those subs are promos through Comcast, Apple, Verizon, AT&T, etc.

more to come.

A large majority of those promos expired in the 1st year. So they've been full paid subs for at least a year now.

As for your example of the Parks prices, that was happening prior to him. And it comes down to an econ101 taught fundamental, supply and demand. Too many guest not enough supply, have to control it somehow and that ends up being via pricing. Yes it prices some out, but that is the nature of business. Will it affect them longer term, remains to be seen, hasn't the last decade.

So we'll just have to wait and see how things go over the next couple of years.

Does the sony deal apply outside the US?

Id love to see more old walt era content on disney plus here in the uk. Id love to see the true life adventure, people and places and the Disneyland serie. It would be great to see a wdw 50th special as well we get very little parks content
