I think the movie was crap, but I agree with you about Luke. Luke even addressed it within the movie. "You think, what? I’m gonna walk out with a laser sword and face down the whole First Order?"

The complaints about Luke are primarily from weird nerds who are upset that 70 year old Luke Skywalker wasn't the uber badass that 30 year old Luke Skywalker was in the old novels that were barely canon to begin with.

How old was palpatene? It’s not like being old and weak have to go together.

I think people would have rather he wasn’t there than to see him less than glorified. Some might say he was tossed in as an easy bone to throw to fans even.

It’s also implied that the first order was a fraction of the size of the empire. Thus should be far easier the defeat.

He force-projected himself across the galaxy to save everyone, sacrificing himself in the process. He was literally given a messianic send-off.

Wait, why don't we like the Lucasfilm Story Group? I thought the Lucasfilm Story Group was just Pablo Hidalgo and Leland Chee slapping novelists on the wrist when they try to do something that goes against established canon.
They were quietly, unceremoniously fired in the midst of 3 awful movies rolling out.

Beyond that - how was the play, Mary?
I enjoyed it. I can’t view it as crap just because you and others think it is. Nor can I pretend that Luke was “destroyed” when he was, in fact, portrayed as a self-sacrificial hero.
Blah blah…yeah…”some people” liked Leonard part VI too…

…but we never got a part 7.

Iger set absurd deadlines to show off his shiny new toy.

Luke in TLJ was a really strong, interesting bit of character development. He was great, and the rot at the core of the Jedi order that his section of the film began to address has been evident since Empire and ran throughout the PT, though Lucas lacked the nuance in his writing to effectively deal with it. Dealing with it head on should have been a priority of the ST, and Last Jedi began that, but then RoS ran away from it as fast as possible.

Anyway, we should stop arguing about Star Wars here, I say hypocritically.
There were no absurd deadlines

Disney posted on FaceBook the quote about never losing sight that it all started with a mouse, and oof, the comments... Overwhelmingly the sentiment is the Disney Company has lost sight of its values. Now, perhaps they are all international spam bots, but I really hope Disney can recover, and I don't see how the new old management team makes the investment and hard decisions needed to regain consumer confidence that is rapidly spiraling away from them.

The majority of Iger's total compensation is tied to the price of DI$. Don't forget that.

Whomever coached him on his performance today did a great job.
He's had a lot of practice over the last two decades, and got a lot of softballs.

Incidentally, the stock is down over 3% today, and the "Iger bump" has almost been erased.

???

No he didn't. He was asked about selling parts of the company (or the whole company), he was asked about making an acquisition, he was asked about layoffs, he was asked about hiring freezes, he was asked about Park Pass, he was asked about the Florida move, he was asked about Reedy Creek,

Those are the opposite of softballs.

They weren't all softballs, but he knew what type of pitch was coming ahead of time. It was also addressed the controversial issues without actually forcing an answer. Whomever coached him must have had a political background, because there were no direct answers. In fact if you look at the summary of his responses, especially to the harder questions, his answers were basically mostly word salad.

Much like the vegetation and animals of the Jungle Cruise, this was a Disney "Real" event.

Iger was always came across as more human than Chapek, so the bar was set fairly low for him to start. Maybe he learned a little from his political coaches when he thought he'd be a presidential candidate.

Were any of those questions unexpected, or required a definitive yes or no? He had a nice spin on things but it's because he knew those topics were coming and how to address them. This wasn't a Tim Russert grilling.
