If Strange World flops it’s due to the lack of marketing.

Well... lack of marketing is usually the result in a lack of confidence from management.

Seems like for whatever reason, they have really low expectations for this one, especially since they've already announced it'll be available for winter break streaming.

People can and will read whatever they want into that.

It's possible for anyone to guess the time and potentially be right up to twice a day.

This thread should not be political, and neither will I, but that’s also a large part of Chapek’s downfall. He wasn’t able to navigate any high profile issue as well as Iger had. Disney was no longer politically neutral as it aspired to be for decades.

Iger was much more subtle about increasing costs while decreasing budgets. Chapek hit you over the head with a hammer. Iger made some of the best acquisitions of the past two decades in media. He knew how to negotiate with Hollywood and knew where content was heading.

I’m still weary about the future of Disney, especially the parks, but less pessimistic than I was prior to hearing this news. Now, can Iger find a real successor? He’s failed that for nearly a decade.
Thing is, he didn’t need to! He could have found his own PR mastermind and spokespeople with actual personalities and gotten out of the way.

Everyone knows Igers political position but he‘s eloquent enough to make a statement without stepping into the middle of a political firestorm. It’s not so much what he thinks but how he says it.
Given the very specific circumstances surrounding the event in question, there was absolutely no way to finesse an answer to avoid a firestorm. There almost always is. In this case, there wasn't. Chapek stumbled badly but it was a no-win scenario. He was the fall guy, the sacrificial lamb.

Encanto came out in November and was on Disney plus the next month. Your argument is invalid.

You mean Chapek had low expectations for the film. Iger’s all about it!

Please seek some professional counselling. You seem to believe that other people (including dead people) share your distorted view of the world. Ownership of DVC points does not protect you from a mental health crisis.
That person is a DVC member? Yikes. Seems more like a kid on thanksgiving break.

When Iger was questioned on stockholder calls accusing him and the company of being 'too woke,' his response was, to paraphrase, "We don't see these issues as a right or left issue, we see it as a human issue."

A far cry more diplomatic than the hot water Chapek got himself in.

And the Scarlett Johansson debacle would have never happened under Iger.

Yeah. But the marketing definitely isn’t helping. The weren’t confident in Encanto either and they were wrong. The folks making these marketing decisions seem out of touch.

Encanto, arguably, was not a hit until people were seeing it for free*.

We can say a lot about why that was - people still not all back to theaters, people not impressed by the trailer enough to pay to see it, etc. but it's a pretty safe bet that had it not been for Disney+, nobody would be calling it a hit and that one got plenty of marketing.

You can say the quick release to Disney+ doesn't mean much but they put a lot more effort into promoting that one than they are with this one and I still think that's not because they just forgot to but we'll see.

I'm not aware of it [Encanto] moving much merch even after Disney+, beyond the soundtrack and frankly, that's the only thing people seem crazy about - well, one song, anyway, even still. (but I'm open to being proven wrong).


*as in no additional charge.
