Not completely, how do you explain to a 8 year old (who doesn’t understand genes, chromosomes, biology, etc) that someone’s a man but also a woman at the same time?

Just asking for confusion.
You go step-by-step first. Just like I did when I chose to do my science fair project on human reproduction in elementary school. I didn’t know what sperm, chromosomes, zygotes, embryos, eggs (relating to women), trimesters, etc. we’re before I did my research. I had to learn and understand everything in steps.

Kids are smarter than you believe.

I had no idea what “ze” meant and I’m nearly 50. LGB makes sense to everyone, whether you agree or disagree is irrelevant, we all understand what it is and what it means, from T on though is very confusing, even for adults. How are elementary kids expected to comprehend concepts like this?

We aren’t dealing with explaining 2 dads or 2 moms, that’s easy, that’s a simple talk about love comes in many forms… we’re talking about changing gender, altering anatomy, taking drugs to permanently alter your hormones, preferred pronouns, etc. It’s a subject adults struggle to comprehend, there’s no way most elementary kids can comprehend it so all it does is create confusion.

It’s sad that gender has been interwoven with LGB because they are separate things and the LGB community is getting drug into a battle that has little to nothing to do with them.

Although Sexuality and Gender are indeed very different things, and the Trans Community is going through a very different set of battles and issues, they are VERY MUCH a part of the LGBTQ2+ community, and we stand with them.

I took Science. If you have a Y chromosome you're male. Hasn't changed.

I mean, my daughter started learning about animal life cycles in 1st and 2nd grade...so while they may not be at the level of genes and chromosomes, there is discussion of the concept of reproduction then.

While I don’t disagree I’d also factor in how much do you want to teach your kid about biology and sexuality at 8. That will vary by how mature your kid is.

It's so funny how every single trans person I know has absolutely zero interest in sports, but in every argument about trans rights, "the competitive edge" never fails to be brought up. Are there people transitioning for the wrong reasons and chasing fame and glory? Sure, people are inherently selfish and history has proven that there will always be someone manipulating a movement for their own personal gain. But its so incredibly the minority, it's wild how many people cling to that to justify their transphobia. The same people who have begrudgingly accepted Gay people are now putting the trans community through the same hoops. It's truly sad to see. Also, athleticism has nothing to do with this bill (or Disney's response) and has no place in this thread.

There is a time and a place to teach children sensitive subjects. Between Kindergarten and 3rd grade isn't one of them.
Tell me what is sensitive about acknowledging the existence of gay people, especially when they are family members of kids in the class?

Seems to me the parents objecting are the only ones being sensitive.

So, I came across this slide in all the hysteria around the Florida bill. And this type of thing is why the majority of parents support the bill. And this is only the official state curriculum. Individual schools and teachers teach other things that are simply inappropriate for children. Parents, while watching school on zoom are now aware of these things. I mean, do 10 year olds really need to be taught about masturbation by a teacher?
This is something over which to get hysterical? I went to school in New Jersey, and back then (pre-internet) we saw "the films" as part of health class in the 6th grade.

I've heard it said kids mature faster these days. If that's so, and considering the widespread information available online that we didn't have, maybe a year sooner is appropriate.
What do you mean nice try? Do you think most parents are aware that their 10 year olds are being spoken to about masturbation? Do you think that's appropriate?
Actually, yes. Again, I'm going back to the stone ages, but before we were shown "the films," our parents were made aware of the curriculum and had to sign a permission slip. Those who didn't get a signature were put into a different classroom during this one hour lesson. I can't remember that happening to anyone, but it may well have.
I had a comprehensive sex education class in 6th grade, and strangely enough, it did not warp my fragile little mind.
So what did? :p ;)

I also learned about that in second grade, insects, dinosaurs, amphibians, and reptiles specifically. We raised our own caterpillars and learned about their lifecycle up until they hatched from their cocoons and became butterflies. My third grade class read Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in the original Elizabethan English. My teacher was great in breaking down the text to where we could understand what they were saying and the plot. We also would switch teachers for certain subjects in third grade at my school. My “other” third grade teacher taught us about different types of art, including famous artists. I first learned about artists like Van Gogh, Picasso, and O’Keefe in her class. We took typing lessons in the fourth grade. I could go on.

Kids really are smarter than some adults believe. I’m grateful for the education I got in elementary school. I didn’t feel like I was being looked at as some little kid who couldn’t learn. Instead, I and the other children were seen as students with potential who could learn a vast array of things, and we did.

This isn't an anti-gay bill. (Yes, I've read it.) This is a parents' rights bill. It's an anti-grooming bill. It's not a "Don't Say Gay" bill. Please just stop. No one is taking your rights away. Discussion on sexuality, gender, etc. doesn't belong in a public school classroom with 5-8 year olds. It belongs at home. Full stop. Let parents be parents and teachers be teachers. Discussion of sexuality/gender with small children isn't teaching. It's grooming. You can question the political motives/intent behind the bill all you want -- but it still doesn't take away any of its core merits.

Then Disney decides to go step into a big pile of doo-doo -- and now I have to respond in kind. They could've stayed out of it. They should've stayed out of it. This whole thing might've passed fairly quickly and life would've gone on. But they just had to take a stand. A delayed, half-*** one at that. And now they double-down and say they're going to produce even MORE LGBT+ content for young children. So they're now waging (political) war on a large portion of their core audience/fanbase. Families like mine.

So now I've got some difficult decisions to make. Good Lord, I'm starting to hate this company. Walt must be spinning in his grave.
Anti-grooming? Seriously? Where did you get that?

And if you think "discussion on sexuality, gender, etc. doesn't belong in a public school classroom with 5-8 year olds" "full stop" then you are a prime candidate for enrolling your children in private schools or home schooling.

Society at large cannot cater to irrational fears of nothing.

"Gay" is not in the bill. Not acknowledging gay people is not in the bill. What is in the bill is "Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards."

There’s a dailywire article making the rounds on Facebook from “conservative” Disney employees who are claiming they are being shamed, bullied, etc by progressive employees and Disney is not supporting them.

Disneys workforce is probably in the range of a 60/40 - 50/50 split, externally they are alienating guests, internally they are alienating employees… Disney really stepped in it this time. I’ll be shocked if Chapek survives this debacle as CEO.

Disney has to work with both sides in some capacity moving forward...because of the split you mentioned. It isn't as black and white in every area as some would like it to be.

I take that back...they don't have to. But for a company of this type, choosing not to comes with a crap ton of risk that would be quite unprecedented...

And more is coming.

Deep breath. DeSantis is temporary. Disney is not. WDW and I will both outlast him here in Florida.
You're a 50 year old gay man, correct?

I would suggest that you might not be entirely tuned in to what "the kids" are up to these days, as it were. There's a lot buried in the + that doesn't have much of anything to do with LGBT.

The TikTok teens are into some weird stuff.
I am.

And no, I am definitely not tuned into "the kids." I have never been far left. I don't like either extreme. I had to unfollow things like "huffpost gay voices" because the articles were ridiculous and the comments were worse. I've been disparaged for being cisgendered (identifying as the sex I was born) and for being male, being white, and marrying another white man.

Apparently I have had it so easy, or so the 20 year olds tell me who weren't born either time I marched on Washington, DC.

By the time they really matter, I'll be dead or at Shady Pines.

But that's a whole other discussion.
