Boat Ride in Germany?

I thought Germany was a fairly "new" country in european terms. I mean apart from 2 world wars, which is hardly a tourist draw, wine, beer sausages and cars is pretty much all you can say about Germany. After all the wall will have soon been gone for 20 years.

Actually, WW2 and Holocaust landmarks are a HUGE tourist draw for Germany. An estimated 600,000 to 1,000,000 visitors tour Auschwitz-Birkenau alone each year (though Auschwitz-Birkenau actually lies in Poland, the site/museum is easily accessible via German historical tours).

The Rhine River boat ride would be a beautiful addition to WS. As someone else mentioned before, Germany is home to many fairytale-esque castles, including those famous structures that inspired Walt and Cinderella Castle. Some sort of recreation of an actual Rhine River voyage is more than likely what the center concept of the attraction is, and something fresh and updated from the original early 1980's drawing board would certainly spice up another WS location without much to do!:animwink:

Come to Germany and visit Poland, well I suppose it is quite a Germanic theme.
The Rhine is a working river, most of the fairy tale castles are not on the rhine but in Bavaria or on the Mosel-Sar. As for a Polish death camp Im not quite sure how that sells Germany, though given Siemens is a new sponsor perhaps a little a dark ride based on Dachau as a show piece, then a bit about the Stasi, and a tribute to those who died crossing the wall, perhaps Adidas would do something too featuring the pre sports wear days when they manufactured jack boots.

I know why not do a theme on the Pied Piper, though the rodent extermination thing may put off Disney.

In my ideal World Showcase there'd be the Rhine River Cruise in Germany, the Gondola Tours in Italy, the Mount Fiji roller coaster they were going to build in Japan, a Brother Bear log flume in Canada, and a Mr. Toad-esque ride in Great Britain. Then I'd have a reason to go there other than the American Adventure & Gran Fiesta.

I really hope this Rhine River Cruise idea comes to pass... like others have said there's plenty to showcase in a German boat ride besides wars like the splendid folk culture and castles. It'd be yet another incentive for guests to head back to World Showcase. :)

This is frustratingly an area where there is scant detail. Do you know any more regarding the ruins (show, ride, walkthru) and night show?

Sadly, I don't really know anything about the project. It seems to be one of those things that was always mentioned in one sentence or half-sentence snippets. I don't recall ever hearing anything about a ride before, although it might just be slipping my mind at the moment. It seems like it was most often described like 'a recreation of Roman ruins'. I have seen reference to the show, though, as a sound-and-light night show that would consist of projections and such.

I haven't even ever seen art for it either; most of the renderings and models from the 1982 period show one or two large Romanesque buildings in the back of the plaza that were never built but nothing beyond. Beard just describes the unbuilt portion as representing Southern Italy (to open in 1983!).

I heard of another boat ride with a finale in the Colliseum.... but again details are sketchy at best. I do know there were solid plans for another 2 floor restaurant to the west side of Italy but this never happened either. So far as an attraction, even back to 1979 the area is simply marked `future development` - but so was the land west of the UK - which did have detailed plans for the Crystal Palace and was made public in 1982.

Wow... this is the first I had ever heard of the 2nd restaurant. Are there any details of what this was supposed to be? I don't have as good access to documents as you do; I've never seen any siteplans or blueprints at all for any of EPCOT (much to my chagrin!).

It is odd that the Crystal Palace addition to the UK would have been as promoted as it was while the Italian additions remain mostly unknown. Then again, they hyped the heck out of Equatorial Africa and look what happened there...

And another thing

I'll add my voice to the chorus of those saying NO CHARACTER RIDES in Germany (or elsewhere in Showcase, I'd say). World Showcase was made to show off the countries and their cultures. If you want to tell a story that goes beyond mere travelogue, I'm sure each country has plenty of folklore that would make a great ride.

Although I am mostly against characters in many instances in World Showcase, I do think Mr. Toad would fit quite nicely into UK. But maybe that's just because I miss Toad in WDW.

How many people who are advocating a Rhine river cruise have actually been to Germany and how many have actually cruised down the rhine?

Perhaps if it is to be a Germany update the food shop could start selling Turkish kebabs.:slurp:

Just a Disney version of the Rhine River.

Kinda like looking at the world through rose-colored glasses.

I've take tours of the Rhine River a few times while my family was stationed in Germany.....

There is some beautify scenery, several castles... they could even include the Lorelei Rock, etc....

I think a Rhine river boat ride would be cool... the Germany pavilion needs an attraction...

the UK is quite happy to sell its self as a living museum, I would have thought the Germans would want to portray their industrial and technological prowes, given the reunified Germany and how they positioned their advertising for last summers World Cup.

Just a thought, given they created the autobahn and "the peoples car" perhaps an automotive theme might work. After all German castles are a bit Disney, there not proper castles that were battled over for 100s of years I mean Germany wasnt around then.

A real African country?? What on earth do you consider Morocco? I dare you to go say that to the people who work at that pavilion!

Personally, I'm still wishing hard for Australia - it's a country and a continent! And of course, the main attraction could be Cody's Flight: A Rescuers' Down Under flight simulator :lookaroun

Erm sorry to point out that australia isnt a continent. Australasia is. Encompasing new zealand, the pacific nations and many others.

Also I do wonder where and what you lot think Morocco is. I've seen it written multiple times that the World Showcase needs 'an African nation', or 'an Islamic' one. *slams head against table* :hammer: :hammer: :hammer:

Actually...Australasia is not a continent.

Australasia encompasses the continent of Australia and surrounding islands/territories.

It is more of an ecoregion.

Let's just put Volkswagen Beetles on Test Track and call it a day.

Australasia is a geographical, often geopolitical, region consisting of numerous lands—mostly islands but sometimes including Australia—in the Pacific Ocean and vicinity. The exact scope of Oceania is defined variously, with interpretations including Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, and those islands of the Malay Archipelago east of the Wallace Line (East Timor and parts of Indonesia

Why take it out though? WS has tons of space left. If you really want perspective on it, go stand on the second floor balcony of the Mitsukoshi and peek over toward Morroco. It's massive and empty.

Isnt that where there is alot of construction is going on. Last week when I was there there was alot of site work going on, not sure what for and it didnt look like any foundation work just infastructure for something.

Something for the Flower & Garden Festival? I know they build stuff between Morocco and France for the Food & Wine Festival, so I'm sure they do for F&GF, too.
