I don’t think it’s really anything to do with Aquaman and DC - Wonder Women, for example, didn’t deter them from bringing in Greek gods to the MCU. Several prominent YTers suggest that they are purposely steering clear of the name Atlantis in favor of something different (since DCEU already claimed it with Aquaman).
I think the change is more motivated by Disney’s push for inclusion and diversity. There hasn’t been much Latino or indigenous American representation in Marvel and this is an easy way to expand that. And can also allow them to use Mayan mythology which is a pretty cool thing.
