Big Thunder Rumour

Hold on folks for the wildest rumour in the wilderness!:D

I just recently bought the Unofficial Guide To Disney World and found a plethora of rumours, most of which were from Jim Hill. While he may not be the most trustworthy person out there he does have some interesting ideas. Here is the exact quote from the book itself.

"As soon as the Imagineers complete their year long redo of Space Mountain look for the 'Wildest Ride in the Wilderness' to get some lengthy and much needed repairs. The upside: once Big Thunder comes back into service in late 2010 or early 2011, visitors can expect to find some Lone Ranger-themed elements added to this nearly 30-year-old attraction, which Walt Disney Pictures hopes will help promote its soon-to-be-released Lone Ranger movie."

Aside from counting economy as a factor, which does affect the project, is this possible or at least planned?

Hmmm. I had never heard of this in any way, shape or form.

Also, didn't BTM just get a refurb back in late 07?

Huh. didnt it just go down for a refurb of the lift hill mechanism and other things. I hope they wouldn't shut it down for a long period of time just to add some Lone Ranger theming.... that is just me of course.

It probably wouldn't be as 'extensive' as Space Mountain and would only take a few months but the question is, is it true?

Pirates re-theming ONLY worked because the movies were
so good. I remember watching the film and saying "well, this is
good enough where they could add Jack Sparrow to the ride" and I
couldn't believe I was thinking that, but it works!

I would say, that the Lone Ranger would fit in BTMR, but they
should wait to see if the film has the same quality and impact on
the popular culture that POTC:CBP had . . . .

I agree to an extent. Some of the best things at Disney are from lesser known movies. Im not saying that adding Ranger is a good idea, just that sometimes the best rides come from the smallest packages.

I heard mention (somewhere on jim hill) of a Big Thunder movie, then I heard the National treasure franchise might be doing something with Big Thunder.

Does anyone know about the Lone Ranger movie? Could they possibly have Big Thunder somewhere in the plot?

I'm really excited for the film, but I hope thy don't try to overlay the ride with a franchise. It's almost perfect the way it is (we could always use some new bat effects). That's one of the reasons I like that ride so much, it is completely untouched (NO GIFT SHOP AT THE EXIT :) ), but I'm open to the possibilities.

hmm this could be either good or bad... not sure how I feel about it.

I guess it would be fine if WDW's was the only version to recieve the upgrades and they DONT remove current show scenes (the beginning, the town, and the avalanche scene). That way it would be a unique version of Big Thunder.

The Lone Ranger is currently slated for a Summer 2011 release. Jerry Bruckhiemer is producing and Mike Newell (Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time) is reported to be the director. Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio(The Pirates movies) wrote the script and Johnny Depp will play Tonto. No actor has been offically chosen to play the ranger himself.

I can see how Big Thunder could mix with The Lone Ranger. Both take place in west. But I don't think Big Thunder is going to be turned into The Lone Ranger ride. I think you definatly might see an AA of the rangers horse Silver or maybe even Tonto somewhere in the ride.

Please, please, please, no characters in Big Thunder. I'm all for an effects overhaul, but keep Clooney and Depp out of one of my favorites.

GAHHHHRGH that made me cry tears of sadness AND anger!

Can they leave the thing alone? JUST LEAVE IT! It's such a great attraction, a movie tie-in would ruin it.

It would literally ruin everything. The universe would collapse on itself. Lone Ranger in BTM=One big blob of red matter.

I do agree, though, that it needs some TLC. Just not....TOO much.

Just for the record, I doubt that The Lone Ranger characters would be put into Big Thunder. And if you think about it, why would Disney want to put characters from an upcoming movie in a popular attraction when they dont know how the movie is going to do? According to the Jim Hill rumor, the attraction would re-open in late 2010 or early 2011. Lone Ranger is a summer release. It doesnt make sense to me. Pirates worked because Jack Sparrow was popular. If Disney was going to do this, I think they would have to wait and see how popular the characters from The Lone Ranger become.

Except that John Lasseter clearly stated that he wants attractions and tie-ins coming out day & date when a new film is released. Thats why Carsland will open alongside Cars 2 in theaters.

Its nothing new really Walt Disney himself did it.

If you feel Pirates works with Depp in it, that is. I eagerly anticipate the day when Depp and his buddies are removed from the attraction and it's returned to its original form.
As for adding The Lone Ranger, for gosh sakes, isn't smacking the 'possum enough?
