China build a mile long bridge over the sea in two weeks.

1. This is a roller coaster. They need to remove all the track, reinstall it, test it to make sure it doesn't kill anyone, refresh the rockwork, probably install new lighting effects, and more

China built an airport capable of handling 40 million passengers in 3 months. Why would replacing a roller coaster track take one year ?

All you are doing is take one bit of track off, and replacing it with a new one.

As much as I frequently criticize Disney's horrifically slow rate of construction, China absolutely isn't the standard anyone should be holding Disney to. And hopefully I shouldn't really have to explain why.

If they only spent a month or two to replace the entire track, I'd automatically assume that it's not safe and wouldn't risk riding it.

It took Disney 3 years to build Epcot from start to finish.

Why would replacing a track for ONE attraction take 1/3 of the time it took to build an entire park ?

Because it isn't 1980 anymore. There are more safety regulations and standards, construction takes more time, testing takes longer, and there are more inspections. They need to do things safer to 2024 standards, not 1980 standards. They need to do it to American standards, not Chinese standards.

Except that the Epcot comparison is accurate. Just not the 3 month Chinese airport timeline. Disney does in fact move stupidly slow on construction projects. Universal is a decent modern day analogy.

You’re right…it’s not 1980 anymore

First…construction standards aren’t really that new. They’ve been around in most ways since then

Second…in 1980 they had draftsman and limited computing power…

Now not only are things immensely more advanced…such as computer design AND fabrication…intuitive programming (yes…AI)…but the procurement/supply chain is light years ahead.

Disney plays a game with its construction…cause Bob is a moron that thinks himself so clever…

For those that don’t remember - Disneyland was in really bad shape prior to the 50th. With members of the Disney Family, the Governor, etc. coming to celebrate the 50th they brought in Matt Ouimet from the cruise line to get things in shape.

At the time, the space mountain rebuild would not be complete for the 50th….. a little money here and there, add a second construction crew to work overnight and look at that - she’s done!

In a customer service focused business, these projects would be done much quicker.

Correct. But to be high quality and on budget they have to sacrifice time. They’re certainly not building by speed demon standards.

I feel like consistent high quality is a recent thing for Universal. It wasn’t too long ago when they were routinely rolling out crap like Race Through New York & Supercharged.

Universal are not only faster and capable of producing products that can match or surpass Disney's current fare when they put the effort in (not that they always do of course, but then again neither does Disney itself), they are also able to get things done on a much smaller budget than Disney is as well.

This was true once upon a time but the delta has reduced significantly.
