Being Critized for Your Love of Disney

I had the pleasure of spending some amazing years, and creating a number of great memories at WDW during my childhood. I always loved the films, the magic, the music... every aspect of the world but it wasn't until I became older that my passion really grew. A majority of people that I meet are quick to joke about this passion, and somehow perceive it as being strange. Why do people feel this way? I find it beyond frustrating.

My mama always says..."you can't control how people act, only how you react to them". People for some reason feel the need to criticize - whatever their reason - I just ignore them and come here where we're all nuts! :D

I definitely get that. My family loves disney but none of them are as nutty about as I am. They love going. I love learning about Disney. The facts, secrets, stories, etc.

I definitely get both family and friends that just roll their eyes at me lol

I don't receive a lot of criticism for my interest in WDW, but I will share one truth that I hope will be of some comfort to you. Most of the people who might see me as a bit of a freak for going to WDW so often are the same people who come directly to me for help and advice when they need to plan their own trip.

We always catch crap about our Disney addiction. I don't care. I generally joke back about it like "Don't drink the water at WDW or you'll end up like me!". Lol! There's worse things to get hooked on. Everyone is different. Disney isn't for everyone. Nothing wrong in being different. I don't let people bother me with their jokes. My bro-in-law is the worst, tho. He razzes me/us but then he's all into cruising. I give him a hard time back telling him he needs a new favorite vacation because sitting on a boat eating 24/7 isn't helping his waistline or health. Lol!

Several times when I've told someone that I was going on a vacation to WDW the response was "oh how old are your kids?". But when I tell them I dont have kids they look at me funny. Like they cant figure out why I would want to go there if I didnt have kids.

I don't let it bother me either. People don't get it why I enjoy going to the world every year, just like I don't get why they like to go shooting deer then hanging their heads on their walls.

People often joke and have to criticize things that they dont understand or find different from their minimal, close minded thinking.

We are all guilty of it some how some way. I dont think you are weird. Dont take it personally. Just think that the parks will be a few people less crowded since they arent there.

I run into the same thing....some of them are just jealous they have never been or think they cant afford to go. Little do they know...you can do for very little money with planning. I think my boss is the worst and I give it right back to him as goes to the same beach house every year and things never change there...always something new at WDW!!!!!

I got "Why? You have no kids?" at my wedding, when I told someone we we were going to WDW for our honeymoon. Talk about sticking a pin in my balloon of excitement (I had not been in 12 years before that).

This is common sentiment, and while it frustrates me sometimes, I take comfort in knowing plenty of people -- adults -- who previously thought that Disney was "lame" or "just for kids," who were converted by their first trip to WDW or DL.

I'll often see these people post "Now I understand" in response to others' negative or ill-informed views about Disney.

Of course, there will be people who *have* been to WDW and for whom the experience simply did not do anything for them. One person said "Wow, you must need a vacation from your vacation!" after I returned from WDW earlier this year. "I responded with a quizzical expression, 'Uh, what do you mean by that?'" and that pretty much shut them up.

Is it rude to mock someone's choice of vacation? Yes, but all that matters is what you think about it.

I get a lot of criticism for still liking Disney at my age(mid 30s). I am mostly into the theme parks.

People are used to me spending time at Disneyland after work. I don't get too much criticism about that anymore. A few friends went with me a few times and ended up getting APs. People who think it will be a carnival are amazed at the thought and detail that went into it.

I still get crap for visiting WDW every year. It doesn't take a lot of effort for me to get to DL, but people think it is weird that I spend my money and time to fly to WDW. 'Isn't it just the same as DL?' 'Didn't you go there last year?'

As for the 'it's for kids' thing, the way I spend my time, a kid wouldn't enjoy it. I love leisurely dining, enjoying the scenery and wine tasting. There is plenty to enjoy at WDW as an adult.

Hi there,
I think they are the ones with the issues if you ask me.
I get that now and then too "saying to me, when are you gonna grow up" etc. whatever I do not care what anyone thinks. Disney is the bestest ever, when anyone says stuff about keep talking about it, that is what I do. If they don't like they can move on.
I'm not young myself anymore and I enjoy it I think even more now than when I was a kid.
Have fun live your life and the heck with the haters. Some people can never be happy for other no matter what it is you do or do not do. Just enjoy your life and your disney addiction...I sure do....:sohappy: PS HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU AND YOURS

If I had a dime for every person who asked "How old are you?" when I say I am going to Disney or talking about Disney. I also hear about how expensive it is and how much people hate it. I just always smile and say I am not a fan of you either. LOL

Same here!!! Wow we are the same. My family picks on me for always knowing stuff about WDW for example "the brown walkway in Liberty Square" while we were there I asked them did they know why it was brown, and of course being teenagers they didn't, and when I told them they thought I was nutts for knowing this stuff.

Yep I love to learn about Disney because I really think that enhances your experience when you are there. I also love to learn how the company works.

Yes I get teased for my passion but everyone has something. I think it is pointless to play video games constantly. I'm really not all that interested in history. I could care less about whatever villian Glen Beck has created. So when people point out that they think my passion is weird I remark on how weird whatever they are into is.

I always get the "But Disney was an antisemite" or "Aren't Disney evil?" whenever I say that i like Disney a lot. Then again, most people don't even believe me, and then there are times when I'm afraid to say it (during film club I can't bring myself to say I'm looking forward to seeing Tangled ). That being said, I have Snow White and Fantasia and are bringing it to film club right now as some good scenes (and particularly animation) from movies--we'll see their reaction!

People are dumb. I think it's better the older you are, and there are certainly plenty of adults in the parks.

Not only am I a Disney trivia geek, but I have a Mickey tattoo on my chest. I either get a "That's awesome!" Or a "Whoah, now that's dedication."
