Being Critized for Your Love of Disney

My brother and I, both middle aged and Disney park lovers, run into the same thing all the time, so now we just tell them we're going on a fishing trip! Then they say "Great! where are you going" I say "Florida!" at which time they look puzzled since I'm in Minnesota (Land of Lakes). Then I just say we'll probably visit the Disney parks as long as we are there....and we might not actually get to the fishing part.

Usually they get what I'm saying at that point.

If I had a dime for every person who asked "How old are you?" when I say I am going to Disney or talking about Disney. I also hear about how expensive it is and how much people hate it. I just always smile and say I am not a fan of you either. LOL

i get this a lot from my work mates. none of them have ever been to disney or are remotely interested in disney, therefore me liking it is sad and childish. they don't understand it and will never understand it because they never went there as a child. i find it a bit off putting sometimes and i do try to ignore them, but some of their comments just make me feel like a stupid idiot.

neither do they understand my love of sci fi, because they all sit home and watch soap operas.

Yep we get it all the time.

I just think a lot of people don't get it. Several members in our family don't get how we could go to Disney every year without it getting really old. My response?

'Well the beach doesn't change every year does it? And yet you continue to go every year. Whats the difference?'

That usually shuts them up.

Any time someone questions our decision to visit WDW on our vacation, I make them a simple offer: If they will pay for it, we will take our vacation wherever they choose.

Alas, I have yet to have someone take me up on my offer. Can't imagine why.....

Did I mention my parents like Disney, but think it's bad that I like it as much as I do?

"Jake, as much as Disney is fun, it's also not real...you should think of getting other jobs/hobbies"

People ask me the same thing, and usually its people who have never been or the last time they went was 20 years ago when they were knee high to a cricket.

Less people for me to wait in line behind, if you ask me. I don't need to be validated by anyone in this regard. If fun rides, great food and scenery are weird ..... then Im guilty.

I live 70 miles from the coast of North Carolina, but I'd go to WDW just as much if it was closer, or if Orlando had more opportunity in this ole' economy!

Heading to Disney for a week, this Saturday!!

I have a Figment hoodie that I bought a few years back and just the other day a couple of my co workers were making fun of it and me. Some people just don't understand and that is ok. They can do what they want with their vacations and vice versa.

I don't know if I can honestly say I have ever been "criticized" for being a Disney geek. I know there are some people I have talked to about Disney things, more specifically, WDW, who maybe don't share the same passion or love I have for the parks, but it has never caused any problems or tension between us. I know when to change the subject when someone isn't as interested in a topic as I am and do so accordingly.

I guess I am pretty fortunate though that my wife and kids and best friend all share my love for WDW and talk about it as much as me. Even most of my co-workers (most who have never been themselves) will ask me questions about my family vacations to WDW or at least seem interested when I am talking about it. Pretty fortunate guy I guess!!!

I get it from immediate friends, who can't understand why I don't take a trip to a beach in South America, but the truth is I just can't sit still that long on a beach and do nothing. Being a free lance producer, I meet a lot of new people all the time on different projects, I am constantly amazed at how many people really are Disney fans. Met another one yesterday, a gentleman who is from Beverly Hills, his mother made them wait in line the opening day on the return of Captain EO in Disneyland just to get her the 'rainbow' t-shirt.

I don't receive a lot of criticism for my interest in WDW, but I will share one truth that I hope will be of some comfort to you. Most of the people who might see me as a bit of a freak for going to WDW so often are the same people who come directly to me for help and advice when they need to plan their own trip.

Same here! I can't tell you how many people have called me for help/advice for their own trip too! I've never really caught alot of grief....mostly comments like "there are other places to go besides Disney" These comments usually from people who go to the same beach, stay at the same hotel, and go during the same time of year every year........go figure! Bottom line though...I don't care what anyone else thinks. I'm not asking them to pay for it and I'm certainly not asking them to tag along! As long as my family enjoys Disney we'll continue to visit for as long as possible!

Direct quote of an email I got from a friend who USED TO mock in good fun but just got back from taking her kids for the first time:

"The trip was AMAZING - we seriously had the best time and it must be a sickness because I'm already thinking about our next trip..."

She's becoming one of us...:D
