What'cha get upto?
Clare (my sister), Mark (her husband) and I met up with Brian earlier in the week at an Italian restaurant. Later in the week he had to bail out of a couple of meetings (with very good reasons, I hasten to add).

We had all hoped to get together Friday Night but that was not to be. Alicia got to Clare's early afternoon so we hit the same Italian place as earlier in the week (last chance for a canolli). Brian was then able to drop by later in the afternoon before he had to dash to a concert, Alicia then made the long drive home and I headed to the airport.

Extra points to Alicia for making it - not a short drive and she was suffering from the sniffles, so before you ask Og, that meant no snogging.

Second extra points to Alicia - she bought me the Animal Kingdom DVD :D

Cool! Looks like you're getting skinny too. I've got some work to do by June 1.

Hey, nice picture! Good to know you had fun! But yeah, of course, I have a foreigner's question: what's a "canolli"?

Basically, it's an Italian dessert that is a fried shell that is filled with cheese. Fat free and zero calories. :lookaroun

http://fantes.com/cannoli.htm

A cannolo (derivative of "canna," meaning "tube" or "cane") is a tubular shell, deep fried, then traditionally filled with ricotta cheese made from sheep's milk. Cannoli come to us from the island of Sicily, the land of scrumptious desserts, where they have been a staple since around the 9th century. They are believed to have been introduced by the Arabs who occupied the region during that time. Some believe that this delicacy dates back to before the time of Christ.

Today they are still made in pretty much the traditional way. However the sheep's milk has largely been replaced by bovine milk in the ricotta cheese, and cream fillings have long been popular. You'll even see the small finger-size cannoli in many Italian bakeries today.

They are delicious and easy to make if you are an experienced cook.

Another way to enjoy the flavor is to get a cannoli cake... usually yellow cake with cannoli filling. :slurp:

Canollis are foreign to me too. They are widely available in Italian restaurants and delis in America, but I have never seen one in a UK restaurant or deli. I've never met an Italian who has heard of them either.

The canolli at Red Sauce has a chocolate lining to the shell, which makes it even nicer :slurp:

The foreigner is officially confused... Is it sweet, then? Thought it was salty. :veryconfu :veryconfu

They are sweet treats, like pastry. It is a fried shell (pastry dough) that is stuffed with sweetened Mascarpone or Ricotta cheese. I like chocolate chips in mine, some people like tiny bits of dried fruit. The inside of the shell is sometimes painted with chocolate or maybe just the edges are dipped. Some people dust them with powdered sugar.
