Sad thing is, and the thing I think many on here are the most offended by, is that WDW sells itself to the first-time visitor who doesn't know better.

They'll come away from their first trip without that truly "mind-blowing" experience - Disney will have their hard-earned money and that family will never come back.

That's the part of the magic that the current regime fails to understand. Personally, I'd think they'd want people to say "Oh my gosh, I can't wait to come back" rather than "been there, done that."
BINGO......And this my friends is why you are seeing MORE AND MORE AND MORE TV ads for wdw. No magical first time experience means no word of mouth advertising when these one timers get home.

Huh? Pixar has been distributed by Disney since day one, is synonymous with the Disney name, is animation, is beloved by hundreds of millions of children, and, oh yeah, is responsible for saving Disney financially.

I'm as big a Lucas fan as anyone, but how in the world (besides your own personal feelings against Pixar) would an IP that Disney just recently acquired possibly fit in the parks better than Pixar?

Lucas has been associated with Disney much longer than Pixar. Also Pixar was originally a branch of Lucasfilm.

Both very true statements, but neither have anything at all to do with the point I was making (or conflict with what I was saying at all).

Pixar has been synonymous with Disney since the day Toy Story came out. Most of the public think that Disney has owned them the whole time. Not only has Pixar been the biggest animation studio for the past 20 years (something people associate with Disney), but there are also many, many rides and attractions scattered throughout the Disney parks and the merchandise has always associated as Disney product.

Lucas has had one or two attractions at each of the Disney resorts. Other than that, absolutely nothing at all to do with Disney.

Like I said, I'm as big of a SW fan as anyone (seriously pathetic and completely overrun with SW stuff throughout my office). Lucas and Disney are the perfect partnership and it's a dream come true. That said, Pixar is much more identified with Disney than Lucas at this point. I don't know how anyone could argue that. Most people still don't even realize Disney owns LucasFilm.

I bet most people don't even realize Disney owns Marvel either.

No doubt. That's even made worse due to Marvel being at the competitor's park a few miles away (and on all of their nationwide advertising).
I would imagine the films would be a bigger reason. They've opened with Fox, Universal, Lionsgate and Paramount logos, but not yet with a Disney logo.

One would hope they don't ... the Disney label is where you send live-action films to die it is like Death's touch ... smart people would use Touchstone Pictures label seen as it just there for Dreamworks live action films.

With new movies, there are so many logos that come on the screen before the movie starts (between the company that made the film, the producers and the distributor), I don't know how much of that is just white noise these days. I don't think people remember what logo was before the film anymore.

When the Disney logo is next to the Marvel name on merchandise and ads (and when they get a presence in Disneyland), that's when it will people will take notice.

Brilliant post. I'd highlight that the $2.2 billion of PROFIT is PER YEAR, but investing that amount back in the parks just once would have a lasting effect for decades.

No one would expect them to spend that much, but giving WDW $1 bill every other year and DLR $500 mil every other year would get the parks back to being the very best in the world within 5 years.

Just look at how the $1 billion spent on California Adventure completely made over that park and turned it from a ghost town to a legitimate Disney Park. Now imagine what $1 bil could mean for EPCOT or DHS!

Trouble is P&R is the ATM for the rest of TWDC so all the money is sucked out and used elsewhere.

I was actually considered writing something like "Disney owned logos" but Marvel Studios is a Disney owned studio. I guess it will be interesting to see if future Star Wars films open with just the Lucasfilm logo or something else with it.

From most recent 2013 quarter

Media Networks $ 1,442
Parks and Resorts $ 571

Yet even though Media Networks division Operating Income is being reduced ... and honestly even with that Media Networks has been rising, producing more profit ... if they can keep reducing operating income whilst increasing revenue over the next 2 years it will be the most important part of TWDC.

It can be argued it already is to the detriment of P&R
