Avengers: Infinity War

We have Star Wars movie threads. This is for Avengers. You could even make a Marvel vs Star War thread. I'm sure people would love to debate it with you else where.

It wasn’t a Star Wars vs marvel debate...we dabbled in that but at least I moved on.

It was the posting of that cheesy, corny publicity pic that brought it back. And 🙄 for an obvious trend nobody wants to really talk about because it could make their travel booking “less magical”...

Can we move on? Or it’s ok if it’s Pom poms?

I got something: the coverage of the box office today has a bit of a negative tinge to it. I believe that’s because some main stream critics are being outshouted by the fans wallets...

So they made $25.2 yesterday and that’s been compared against movies that it shouldn’t be by Forbes and other outlets. It’s a non-holiday Monday DURING The school year...so really there is no comparison.

That’s interesting.

The other comparison - and unfortunately it’s a Star Wars one - is that it’s lagging force awakens. It is...but what was force awakens?

Pent up want from 1983 and pent up angst from 99-05. My opinion...agree with it or don’t. I’m moving on.

Is $25 mil domestic on a boring Monday good?

Can somebody help me out judging the numbers?
I'm not sure where you're finding that number, but for a non-holiday Monday, that would put it right under Jurassic World.

I was being sarcastic...it’s doing very well...$25.2 was the estimate domestic from yesterday.

I think all these comparisons are apples to oranges.

It’s hard to compare this one to a holiday, schools out, or a week before Christmas timeframe.

Now that you look at it: all those dates meet one of the following criteria:
1. Christmas week - no school
2. Memorial Day - as in actual memorial day
3. Presidents’ Day
4. Summer/July 4 - no school.

Pretty impressive now that you see the list...thanks

Went back this morning and the theatre was more crowded than it was Friday at 12:00. I don’t think I have ever been on morning and that many people there before. At least in our area - looks like a lot of people may have waited to see it or like me, loved it so much they couldn’t wait to go back.

That is a good non-holiday Monday #, but all the 24/25 million range estimates seem a touch lower than expected. They still may adjust up when the actuals come in, like they did for the weekend. Disney is notorious for reporting conservatively.

I went for round 3 last night and there were a some sold out shows. I chatted with one of the managers I knew and he said they had turned away a good number of people over the weekend, many got tickets for during the week. They had wanted to add more shows during the overnight hours for the weekend, but had complications so they weren't able to. Even today (Tuesday) there looks like there might end up being a few sold out shows.

$24.7 Million for Monday, which brings the domestic count to $282.4 Million

Yeah...nothing to sneeze at...

But the early talk or challenging avatar is kinda silly.

Avatar was a perfect storm of circumstances...

Force awakens was 50% pent up 80’s juju and phantom menace retribution...

Infinity will do “well” but don’t think it’s got any of that going for it.

Oh it’s definitely not making that James Cameron money (at least not Avatar, maybe Titanic on the domestic side). I’m not even sure it will pass the original Avengers at the international box office, because the competition is tougher. Now, if it turns out that I’m wrong, that’s great, but I just don’t see it happening.

Avatar did not have the pull for me. I saw it on DVD. Other than knowing Gamora is in it and the guy is paralyzed. I remember nothing and honestly don’t know anybody that does. Titanic, I will watch every time it is on. It was great. I never got the pull of Avatar, and still do not. He is pushing so forward with sequels, even with Avatarland, I do not see it repeating it’s success. (IMO) FoP is great, but it isn’t enough to make me go see the movie(s) or even rewatch the first.

The common thread for Cameron is that neither of his movies had ANY completion for almost 5 months...it was the weakest slate of “competition” you’ll find and never happens anymore.

My trivia is what was titanics biggest competitor during its run? It’s a classic...

Oooo, let me think. Titanic came out December 1997. I don't think there were any other notable holiday releases that year so it has to be something that came out in 1998, I'd guess something in Spring but I know it was in the top 5/10 for months. So maybe something Summer 1998?

There were a lot of other disaster movies in that era to, those were the blockbusters of their day. But I have no idea which one came out when. Probably one of the asteroid movies?

It was the irradiated dystopian future classic “The postman”...with the great Robin Hood from Chicago- Kevin Costner.

There were no monthly tentpoles then. You got 3 a year in the summer in a busy year...

I have no idea. I just know we did see Titanic at the theater, like 6 months into. I was pregnant when it came out, but we saw it once I was willing to leave the yay-hoo. I watch everything that has to do with Titanic tho. Always have. The real life history mixed with a really great movie made it a hit. For me, at least.
