I’m not sure I like it anywhere else though. I mean I don’t lose any sleep over it. I don’t think it’s the act of being called a recruit or the like. It’s just that you know it means you are in for a certain kind of attraction. If you re a recruit on an attraction it’s probably not timeless or very repeatable IMO. There’s probably a lot of screens and you re probably saving the day every time

I just think it depends on the story. Star Wars for example is a highly military/rebel type of story line so it fits for me. When you are riding the submarines or on the Haunted Mansion, you're basically just regular people exploring. But in a lot of these other situations, the point is to make you feel like you're another character in the story and defeating an enemy. Stuff like Marvel and Star Wars gives way to that easily. That said it doesn't mean its necessary either. I think both are valid in some cases. Now if this was done in EVERY ride, OK, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

I think they try to set it up that way but what are we really doing? Maybe if they gave us guns on ROTR it would be different. But we re just passively on that transport the whole time. On Guardians we put our hands up to get scanned. That’s it

Somehow Indiana Jones Adventure was able to do the 'recruit' angle right. No one does IP like Mr. Baxter and the team of Imagineers who built Star Tours, Splash, Indy- two of which the whole premise is that you're a tourist and something goes wrong.

True. The execution helps as does the fact that we aren’t actually being asked to help with anything. It’s worth noting though that neither are in my Top 7 attractions at DL. I think that’s mostly based on the ride systems however. As an AP, I prefer coasters, Splash, POTC and HM. Coasters are fun. POTC and HM are pretty much the best two attractions ever made and Splash is like the best combo of both worlds.

The “recruits” angle would probably work better if you were just part of the team and not someone new. That’s the real disconnect. You’re this brand new person who is suddenly trusted with something very important. The story team is trying to account for people with no background knowledge and you not really doing anything but it always feels ham-fisted. More attractions just need to take the Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley approach of assuming you are just part of the world which was done after people just ignored the ridiculous conceit of Hogsmead and Hogwarts being opened to Muggles.

Especially since modern Star Tours is basically a Star Wars advertisement. Disney just uses it to promote whatever the newest film is, and it lacks the charm and wit of the original '87 version. I consider the current ride to be very skippable, and would be perfectly content if Disney got rid of it altogether.

I quite enjoy Indiana Jones Adventure- it really is a marvel of themed design. I just wish a few of the effects during the actual ride portion were updated or fixed since a few parts of the ride really fall flat. The 'log rat projector' is abysmal- it's literally an unthemed room right after you go through some of the best theming WDI has done. I'd also love to ride it with a bit more aggressive vehicle movement.

Splash is unique in how dang well it integrates in the area it was built- and no part of that attraction falls flat. Some tasteful projection mapping might add some liveliness to a few of the sets, and a quick trip to Home Depot to get some new light bulbs and some WD40 for those animatronics would be wonderful- but even so, Splash stands out.

87 is by far the best version and I also find Star Tours skippable. With that said, it has grown on me over the last few years. I think when Galaxies Edge opened I really began to appreciate Star Tours. Also, did you get a chance to ride the very last iteration where you go to a couple Rise of Skywalker locations? That one was pretty fun and probably my favorite since the original 87 version. I also don’t trust that anything they replace it with will be better. I mean just the queue alone is probably better than what they would replace it with.

Indy really is a Marvel of themed design. I remember the buzz when it first opened. I honestly haven’t experienced anything like that since. It was Summer 95 and my friends mom took me, my friend and his sister to DL for my friends birthday. t was my first time staying at the Disneyland Hotel and doing magic morning/ rope drop. My friends mom let us do our own thing for most of the day and I remember us running like hell to Splash Mountain and being the first people to ride. We rode Indy at night and were both AMAZED. I think we rode it twice that trip even with the crazy standby lines pre fast pass. I also have my only memory of riding the People Mover at night ( or maybe even at all) on that trip and it was awesome. There was a real electricity throughout Tomorrowland with bands playing and people dancing at Tomorrowland Terrace below.

Indy is not a Must Do on my typical 7 hour trip. I mean no ride is really but I’ll usually prioritize all of the mountains, POTC, HM and some Fantasyland stuff for my son. They really do need to update some parts to give it back the WOW factor it had back in the mid to late 90s. Fix the two areas you mention and maybe do something with the cartoon snake who inches forward at you.

A ride on Splash Mountain, even with the AA and lighting issues, is always among the best experiences Disneyland has to offer. It would have been amazing to see it with some of the projection upgrades Alice in Wonderland got.

I think it’ll happen. It’s too a big a property for them to sleep on. I think it will be significantly delayed though

I am surprised Runnaway Railway wasn’t outright cancelled. I too think the Avengers ride will happen, in some form, but not until 2025.

Basically it comes down to nothing is really totally derailing the MCU popularity in the next five years. Eventually when crowds and popularity warrants expenditure they’ll still proceed as opposed to go with an entirely different property.

Agree. I just hope they go back to a coaster concept or at least theme the bit box of the concept stays the same.

Now that I wouldn’t get my hopes up for. Unfortunately a coaster would warrant a bigger and uglier box.

If guardians in Epcot is seen as the second coming maybe... but I kind of dig the Star Tours that transforms into flight of passage conceit. Coasters can do ‘Space’ and ‘Fantasy’ well, but not so much a variety of practical locations very well. Outside of a mountain / mine.

You say that year as if its way far off in the future, but when you realize that is only 4 years away its not really far in the future at all. I honestly wasn't expecting them to start on it until 2023 or 2024 anyways. So its really only been delayed by a year or two.

Anyone else thinking the Avengers ride that was announced most likely won’t happen anymore?
I really hope that it is still in the cards. Even now I think that California Adventure is missing a true signature attraction. Some will say that Cars fills that niche, or that Soarin' used to. While I like both rides, I wouldn't mention either of them as standing shoulder to shoulder with Indiana Jones or Splash Mountain. California Adventure has need of something that feels kindred to those aforementioned contemporary classics. If they don't plan on building an Avengers ride, based on Disney's most lucrative film series, right now it's hard to imagine them spending E-ticket capital on any other theme.

shoot i know im in the minority but I consider Grizzly Rapids a signature attraction. I love it. Id also put the cars ride right up there with splash and indiana jones. But I do agree CA needs more major attractions, hopefully the next avengers attraction will be awesome. Im thinking it will be an indoor coaster like GotG but a bit smaller due to space constraints. Maybe even a rethemed Tron style coaster with a Captain America on a harley theme or something.

I figure that's where I'm in the minority, thinking otherwise. Sometimes I wonder whether Cars doesn't lose a few points in my estimation because I don't care for the movies. Either way, the racing finale is outstanding. I'm also a fan of Grizzly Rapids, but every time I ride I'm reminded of my first thought when I rode it opening weekend: Where are the animals? I think that element, or lack thereof, keeps it out of the signature tier for me.

Don’t worry. As soon as there’s a successful IP that fits, I’m sure they’ll put them in Grizzly Rapids.
