AVATAR progress

i always thought the theatre would go behind RF cafe

sure, but that would be among the CMM/Avatar plot.

If it is somewhere else, I'm not sure where it would fit except the unused area between Asia and Africa/Rafiki's. My only other thought would be a "new area" on the east side of the park in between where the new FOTLK theater would be and CMM/Avatar (where the parade currently comes out from). There is a bridge from Discovery Island there that is currently backstage but will be reportely used by guests as a possible pathway to the new FOTLK theater. This could allow for a path to be build between Avatar and FOTLK/Africa without just being a barren area there.

Just a thought.

No I think the nighttime theater would end up near/behind Nemo/Dinoland....much easier to build an exit if placed in an area closer to the parking lots.

I don't see it. There is a plot of land between Nemo and E:E, I guess. Or they could repurpose the backstage River Boats building right behind Nemo. But that whole area would just be a bottle neck for crowds to leave. I'm not really sure what area you are talking about anyway.

Also, I don't think they'd want to use an area and have a direct exit to the parking -- they want the crowds to have to walk through Discovery Island/the Oasis in order to pass by shops and food in hopes of impulse buying on the way out.

I would imagine that for a nighttime show, there would have to be large scale updates to the Oasis. It's far too confined for crowds to exit after a show. I would imagine fewer trees and more light. They could stand to lose some of the chronically empty animal exhibit spaces in the Oasis anyway.

Potter was a unique ride system.
FJ's ride system was in development for a while before anyone knew about it and before the deal with JK was signed. Both Disney and Universal saw the Kuka's in use for theme park applications in the late 90s/early 2000's, then they did a big push at IAAPA in '04. Initial development to opening for the ride system of FJ was about 5 years. From announcement to opening was 3 years, and site construction to opening was about 2.5 years. Not quite as long as Avatar's E-ticket, which is also complicated. However, in the world of ride development, even 5 years is quite condensed - Universal just develops and builds quickly. Most of UIOA's initial attraction development to opening was about 8 years.

For those interested in what the next generation of Soarin' looks like, Rick Rothschild is finishing a very neat new attraction in Vancouver. More here, with a lot of technical details on Soarin', Epcot's early development and the new show. Joe Kleiman did a great article.
But avatar is advanced beyond this?

Yes. This is Soarin' 2.0. Avatar is not Soarin'.

I'm really intrigued about whatever system this Avatar ride will have. If it's "not Soarin'", would it be something more similar to Spider-Man/Transformers? Are the plans finalized enough that we'll learn more at D23?
