AVATAR land - the specifics

To clear up a bit of confusion. Today's piece I posted just above is not "concept art". It is a photograph of a physical scale model (with a sky painting behind it). The little blue guys are plastic figurines placed on a model to help show scale to viewers.
Jaw drops.

That can't possibly be true...it's at least heavily retouched right?

Maybe it is only me but I needed the new concept art to get the big picture of the model. I did not realize this part I circled in red was not touching the ground.

The photo is posted on WDWmagic as "new concept art."

You're saying this

is a photograph and not artwork?

I disagree. I could be wrong. But how would there be haze in front of the mountains on a model...?

EDIT: I was wrong! Pay no attention to the firefly behind the curtain. :)

I disagree.

Care to make a friendly wager?

It's a photo of a model. Here's a sample of the sky paintings they'll hang behind these things:

Here are an example of the figurines you place on them (like the little blue guy pointing up at the rocks in the background:

Looking at it now it does look like a picture. I don't know, just the way it looks.

We need time for things to happen.

Figurines made circa 1950! Men with hats ladies with dresses. I want hipster beards and yoga pants!

I suppose I was wrong, as I said I might be. I'm still extremely confused as to how there is haze in the air (in front of the mountains)...

what is that behind them? The tall skinny rock formation things. Another project maybe?

There was a location in the film that had the circular bent rocks like that, they were bending
to an energy field around the life tree or something like that. I think that things have
changed substantially since that picture, which is one of the first ever released. In this
pic, you can see those bent rocks up in the back distance, leading me to believe that they
will be present as a mock-distant forced perspective element on top of some of the cliffs.
