AVATAR land - the specifics

Maybe for some people, but I have seen plenty of people criticize it because the story was bad or derivative of other movies, or because no one remembers the characters.

I will say that of all the criticisms the derivative of other movies rings the most hollow to me. There aren't that many archetypal plots and the "Pocahontas" plot isn't used that commonly. It is a plot that many are inherently uncomfortable with. There's a reason Johnny Cash had to fight to get "Bitter Tears:Ballad of the American Indian" on shelves. But, it is certainly not an overused plot. Hell, I'd watch maybe two movies a decade if my requirement was not knowing the ending beforehand.

And Avatar created one of the best looking cinematic places in a while, which is what the Land will be focusing on and the creatures living there are very unique. What's funny is that a lot of people walking out of the theatre where saying that it would be amazing to be able to go to Pandora. Just think about it for a little bit....

It is gorgeous and it brings JC into the planning process. Those are the two main reasons I've felt this expansion would be a success. I think everyone should root for the expansion to be a success and for the remainder of the Avatar films to flop, since it may remind the bigwigs that tying an expansion or a ride to a hugely popular ip isn't as important as they think, but that is a really weird, specific thing to root for.

Well I wouldn't root for the other films to flop especially becuase the second film will show off Pandoras oceans which we really haven't seen yet. Like I just can't even think of what ideas James has made up for that that's why I'm exited for that too. (Instead you should root for the new Harry potter spin off films to flop ;))

ive always said I believe this land can be successful because of the ability of the films setting can adapt so well to a theme park environment....same as cars and HP.... iconic scenes and landscapes that are rich and immersive
don't know if the rides will be the greatest ever (because we know so little) but if they produce those floating mtns like the model and the flora and fauna like the concept art we will have a huge game changer at DAK
just my opinion of course

I finally saw the movie recently. I have to say, I liked it more than I thought I would. I honestly expected to hate it, because I HATE cartoony CGI, like Disney seems to be obsessed with (see Oz, Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland, etc... pick animation or live action; the in-between irks me so much). But Avatar's visuals were actually quite excellent. The graphics weren't too cartoony, and were pretty impressive. This gives me huge hope for a stunning land and an even MORE stunning flying ride. :)

The plot left quite a bit to be desired (it was basically Pocahontas in Space, as others have said), but the execution was pretty decent and the action in it was fairly cool to watch.

That being said, I cannot even begin to guess how they're going to make 3 sequels out of it. I suppose we shall see!

My sentiments exactly. I could take or leave Avatar as a film but the one thing you can't deny is that it's gorgeous. It's a huge testament to the world-building in that movie that it generated such huge box office returns with, as you said, a relatively cookie cutter plot.*

*It also hit the sweet spot where 3D and IMAX were relatively new and exciting to the mainstream. It was lucky in that regard.

funnily, I think alice in wonderland had more believable cgi characters than OZ the great and powerful.
the monkey looked awful for example.

So I just watched the scene - Climbing Up Iknimiya (The Path to Heaven) - from Avatar as I was clicking through channels on the TV. This is the famous scene where Jake Scully and the Na'vi climb up through the floating mountains to where the banshees live. That entire sequence, followed by Jake bonding with his banshee and experiencing the first flight, are just some of the most visually stunning sequences in the movie. Thinking how this could be captured and replicated in the E-Ticket simulator that is being built has me hoping that the facade and pathways into the building are all encased in rock work. Then, when you enter the ride vehicle, here is hoping that Cameron helped Rohde and his minions design a 3D motion simulation experience that dazzles the senses. The possibilities of flight over Pandora and its many landscapes depicted in the movie almost makes me hope that there are multiple versions that are each an individual experience from the other.

I am also hoping that a lot of the wild life seen throughout the movie are replicated via advanced AAs in the boat ride.

But above all else, I also hope that as WDW has music playing throughout each park, that somehow the James Horner soundtrack for Avatar can be used and played in this expansion area. The music for the movie is very well done and reminds of perfect theme park music to play in the background.
