AVATAR land construction progress

This argument has played out here before and is a familiar script - my lines now would say first fully-realized 3D movie drove interest, higher ticket prices, absolutely no cultural footprint, yada yada...

I just wanted to set out the prediction that, after rosy initial attendance reports and upbeat PR statements, our insiders will start to tell us about deeply discontented rumblings from within the Mouse House regarding how much Pandora is driving attendance and how guests are reacting to the land. And that will impact future developments. If its bad enough, it may help usher Iger towards the exit he keeps avoiding, but probably not. If the powers that be are wise, they will panic and pour money into future development plans, possibly even beefing up SWL. If they aren't wise, they'll slash budgets with increased ferocity. I don't know.

In any case, if I'm wrong, feel free to point at me and laugh (just wait a few months after Pandora's opening to do so)
I think there are a lot of people on the inside who never liked or wanted Avatarland to be built in the first place. They have already typed up their negative reviews and negative spin on the land and are just waiting for it to open to start circulating it. There's a lot of bias so it won't be easy to tell what's true vs "fake news";) The real way to tell how successful this land is will be how long AK stays open at night. If 6 months or a year after opening they go back to closing AK at 6PM then Avatar and ROL were a failure. If the park stays open later and thrives at night the project is a huge success. We won't need inside info to figure it out.

What baffles me some is the die hard dedication some people have to the Disney brand. We've talked about this before with Marvel. After Disney bought Marvel a whole bunch of Disney fans suddenly had a lot more interest in comic book characters they never showed interest in since they now fell under the umbrella of the mouse. If Disney Studios made Avatar a lot of the haters of this project would be gushing over the land but because it was made by another studio it's a bad idea. Seems pretty silly to me to base whether you like something or not on who owns the IP.

i think AK will be insanely successful at night, the only weak side of Ak (currently) at night is lack of animals as well as the closing of the animal paths/treks. Just curious, at what time are they required or plan to close the treks? They where closed pretty early when we went (around 5).
I think they close them because the animals go in. The night Safari has certain animals but not all of them are out. My guess is they could keep the treks open if there was a big enough demand, but they would be missing a lot of the animals that are the highlights unless they "hire" a second shift of animals;)

The more I see about the new land, the more I get excited. It's been years honestly since I saw Avatar.

I didn't even see it when it first aired. I saw it a couple of years later at a special event I won tickets to. The local cinema was touting new digital projection... Stunning. But I remember it was a good movie.

It's funny how years later we look back at old movies and go, my god, they were bloody amazing. T2.

I don't even need to state Terminator 2. It's that iconic. That memorable. You mention Avatar.. People start to remember.

It will take time but it looks like Disney made the right call. Now let's allow the workers to finish up and get it open. I want to see my AK at night.

After Pandora opens, I don't think anyone will care too much. I welcome the contrast.

Yep, as I acknowledged in the article.

Here's a Fast and Furious press release that refers to it as a ride until 2/3rds of the way through the article when it refers to it as part of the tour
http://www.nbcuniversal.com/press-r...ride-open-june-25-universal-studios-hollywood

I don't track Universal's rumors the same way I track the Disney ones so I don't have links at the ready.
From the 2007 press release:

"Inspired by J.K. Rowling’s compelling stories and characters – and faithful to the visual landscapes of the films – “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” will provide a one-of-a-kind opportunity to experience the magical world of Harry and his friends. The fully immersive, themed land will enable guests to visit some of the most iconic locations found in the books and the films including the village of Hogsmeade, the mysterious Forbidden Forest, and even Hogwarts castle itself. "The plans I’ve seen look incredibly exciting, and I don’t think fans of the books or films will be disappointed," said J.K. Rowling.

"Expected to open in late 2009, the new environment will feature immersive rides and interactive attractions, as well as experiential shops and restaurants that will enable guests to sample fare from the wizarding world’s best known establishments. Also debuting will be a state-of-the-art attraction that will bring the magic, characters and stories of Harry Potter to life in an exciting way that guests have never before experienced."

I haven't seen it in person. The Volcano is huge. About twice as tall as the peaks at TL and BB. The land used is about the same as TL and Aquatica and slightly smaller than BB. I'm not trying to knock it but it has some steep competition in town. The "water coaster" looks cool. The rest seems pretty on par with the competition to me, just a few decades newer.

I think we're saying sorta the same thing about the purpose. It gives people another reason to continue to spend time on property. It's why Universal is referring to it as a third park.
Let's move this stuff to the appropriate thread. It does not belong here.
