News Avatar Experience coming to Disneyland Resort

There are a lot of people that think the parking ramp needs to be finished first but I disagree. If the new drop off and bridge were complete, Avatar can go full steam ahead.

I've actually heard youtubers say the new drop off is in the parking ramp? I'm not sure where they get this from.
Back in the Eastern Gateway thread, @britain posted this, but I don't know/recall the source of the updated drawing:

Yes - I think it's pretty much the same plan except for a small accommodation for pedestrians on the West side of Harbor, and the structure will be on top of the bus area, and the garage security section will be on an upper level. (Oh, and the monorail path now stays the same.)

If they re allowing pedestrians off of the west side of Harbor access to the bridge that means the bridge is outside of the security bubble. So how can the security be located at the new structure?

That is someones' copy/paste job to show what they believed would happen, its not official.

The idea someone threw around (can't remember who) in the other thread was that they could somehow have a dedicated fenced off (or somehow separated) lane on the bridge just for parking structure guests so it goes right into the bridge. And so security screening for that would be in the parking structure. But that makes no real sense.

Why build two separate security screenings one before and one after the bridge when they can just have one for everyone to be screened at the same time after the bridge. Logistically I don't see any real benefit to that idea. Especially since the whole point is to allow public access to the bridge anyways.

Yeah I thought about that but thought it didn’t really sound plausibile, effective or aesthetically pleasing so I didn’t even mention it. Haha. It also doesn’t show that in the concept art.

Now if the bridge couldn’t be accessed from ground level than I could see the value in having two security entrances. One for people entering from Habor blvd and one for people arriving to the new structure that would walk right over them on the bridge. Could help with potential back ups in what will be a security area that will be funneling through more people than before with less space than it had previously.

No
I have no idea how things will ultimately pan out, but this is the direct cut and paste from the Disney Parks Blog:

"Plans are underway for a new parking structure and transportation hub that will be built on the east side of Disneyland Resort, on a portion of what is currently the Manchester cast member parking lot. This new area will provide approximately 6,000 parking spaces, shuttle and rideshare areas, security screening and dedicated access for traffic off of Disney Way, improving parking and traffic flow throughout the resort area. As you can see from the artist concept rendering above, this new parking and transportation hub will also feature a pedestrian bridge over Harbor Boulevard, leading to an all-new esplanade arrival experience. This pedestrian bridge will also provide convenient public access to and from Harbor Boulevard."

The first sentence I bolded above says the garage is going on the Manchester cast member parking lot. Is this area not it? It didn't say Pumbaa lot and the only entry to Pumbaa is on Disney Way, not Manchester, so I believe this is why people are assuming the garage will be on the northern part of the area now, not on Pumbaa as previous renderings and plans showed. Time will tell.

Again, only going off what the blog said which was that there would be security screenings on the east side where the new garage is going.

Hmmmm. Thanks for sharing. So how do you have security at the new structure if the bridge is out of the bubble? Unless the concept art is wrong and people won’t have access to the bridge. Or they split the bridge with an ugly, tall fence or wall.

EDIT: Nevermind the concept art is not wrong because it says this too: “This pedestrian bridge will also provide convenient public access to and from Harbor Boulevard.”

Only if you ignore this part of the sentence "transportation hub". So the assumption that the parking structure and a full transportation hub will be in the same space and not two separate spaces as originally planned cannot be made.

It also say "portion of what is currently the Manchester cast member parking lot", not the whole thing. So the way to read that is that in my opinion is again like the original plan that the transportation hub will go on the Manchester CM lot, and that the structure will go like originally planned on Pumbaa.

But yes time will tell.

Maybe it will and maybe it won't. However its hard to have a dedicated security screening and "secure lane" just for park guests if you're also allowing public access to the bridge that allows back and forth access to the both sides of Harbor. It would then have to be a huge bridge to allow that type of back and forth traffic AND a guest only secure lane.

The only way I can see it working is if its a fenced off lane only for guests who are screened. And then the public side completely lacks access to any Disney services and only allows back and forth access to Harbor. Not ideal as it would mean an ugly fence down the middle and fenced off on either end so no public access can be made except to the stairs/ramp/elevator to/from the street.

Because I see no other way to have a secure area on the bridge and allow public access.

I would imagine less fence more solid wall. They won’t want any intermixing, they could have a one way gate onto Harbor street level from the DL side to let the people out without walking back to the security gate.

Maybe, but this all seems like extra work for something that is real simple, just have only screening on the Harbor side of the bridge. You're going to still have to have screening there anyways for all the foot traffic coming in from Harbor.

This is Disney we're talking about, they will take the cheap way out every time, so why add all the extra expense for almost no benefit.

It would also have to be at least a 10 foot tall wall right? I dunno, I just don’t see this happening.

What if Disney has no real plans of allowing people from Harbor onto the bridge? And they re just playing the game for now. Until they eventually say sorry (for insert reason) all of you on the east side of Harbor will have to walk backwards and through our new security screening. What if people on the East side of Harbor are forced to walk towards the new structure/ security screening or all the way to the nearest crosswalk on Disney Way to be screened on the smaller of the two security screening locations.

Not sure how possible this is, but what if they made 2 adjacent bridges, one that is direct from the parking garage to the esplanade area, and one with access to Harbor Boulevard use more for crossing the road??

Because that would take up space that otherwise could be used to expand the parks, the entire point of this project is to reclaim that Harbor entry bus depot and security station to expand DCA.
